Why I don't miss my CX/GL
|
|
|
|
|
My 2000 ST1100 delivered 54 miles per gallon at today's fill up. This tank full included the Saturday Amish Rally ride to the Grand Canyon of PA, where I was trying real hard to keep it under 60 MPH (for Phil). I have a new rear tire so that must have helped. The most I ever got on my 78 CX500 or 83 GL-650I was 55mpg.

Yeah but it's not fair because there was never a st1100 naked custom made. Not exactly my cup of Mtn Dew.

If riding was about mileage we would all be riding 50cc scooters.

My Burgman delivered 60 mpg average on my trip to PA and back. It's a 50 cc scooter (+600 cc or so).

Years ago Glenn pointed out that the ST1100 was the natural evolution of the CX/GL. That made sense. Water cooled transverse V, shaft drive with two more cylinders. 100 hp, lots of torque, great fuel economy, good handling and brakes, Honda reliability, 130 plus mph, lowered center of gravity (fuel tank under the seat) truly a bike that looks near perfect on paper. I like the looks too. But after a year, I pulled the covers off my Twisted Twins and sold the ST1100. I just enjoy pushing a smaller bike harder. Each to their own.

Yes, the ST was a very nice motorcycle too. I rode a friend's once and was very impressed. Fast, responsive and smooth as glass. Personally, I no longer long for one because I don't like the lean forward body position, but that's just me.

The first thing I did to mine was move the bars up an inch and back an inch. I was still able to use the plastic cover over the bars by adding an extnesion tube (an old 35mm film cannister) to the key switch hole.
I'm not letting any of you CX'er ride mine. I wouldn't want to spoil you. The ergonomics now are very similar to my 78 CX500.

It is true the CX/GL 500/650's were part of the inspiration behind the design of the ST1100- as in longitudinal mounted V engine :) The ST must respect it's elders :)

Come on-You can't seriously compare a 20+ year old CX to an ST? I would HOPE that the ST would deliver more hp and better mileage considering 20 years of technological advancements.

I wasn't comparing the two models. I was pointing out how pleased I was to be an owner of an ST1100. I have not seen any other motorcycle, from any company, that I would replace it with, even if a new bike was given to me. Someday, the fleet of CX and GLs is going to dwindle, due to parts shortages. The same thing will eventually happen to the ST. There is some good news though for those of you who want a mid size tourer. Honda is bringing the Deauville here in 2010. It has been offered in Europe for a decade now. If I wanted to downsize, that would probably be my choice. It's 680cc V twin, 5 speed, with good fairing and hard bags. You can get one for $10K, non-ABS or $11K with ABS brakes.

"is the Deauville a shaft drive"
yes it is.
also, it doesn't appear that Honda is going to call it the "Deauville" here in America but the NT700. At least I didn't see the word on their web page. Did I miss it?
The motorcycle is obviously striking a chord. There are three threads going on about it just here at Chopper Charles.

Gene,
Go look at the bike my Honda dealer had one back when I was riding ... the seat is lower than a Harley. Yet it doesn't look like a Harley wanna be to me.

Gene, are you contemplating a change of rides? I'm surprised, I thought the Sidecar rig was your retirement ride. Just get A/C and a closed cab.

Jerry, first let me say this, advise me when you are on the road & I will go ahead and put my rainsuit on!
I think Phil's new avatar is his driveway!
Phil, I won't be changing rides, but I may add to the stable. Actually, I will not consider the new Honda simply because it costs too damn much! I may be able to afford a CX if someone is giving them away!
Jerry, our forcast looks good for rain the middle of this week but next weekend looks good, maybe you should just get to TWO and stay!

The best gas milage I ever got on my ST1100 was 55mpg. The best I ever got on my PC800 was 58, but that was on the BRP and using a very careful throttle hand and obeying the 45mph speed limit. My R80RT got about 46. My GN 400 got about 65mpg. My V-Strom gets 50 on the highway with a careful throttle hand (difficult to do). My CX with the full fairing and full saddlebags and trunk got 55mpg at a constant 55 mph. It went down steeply if I went faster. I am still considering a new NT700 this winter. I had a VT500 Ascot that has the same engine as the NT just smaller and it was utterly reliable and easy to maintain. In fact I think it was the easiest bike to own that I have ever had. The Yamaha Vision got in the low 50s but the old 350f is in the high 30s for milage. My old 350 twin did better. I like both classic styles and newer more modern styles. The CX was revolutionary when it came out. Not because of the design but of all the things that it combined at once. Breaker less ignition, shaft drive, liquid cooling, etc. I think that's why I bought one. I am not into the bigger is better line of thinking which is probably why I am considering the NT700 instead of the ST1300. Been there , done that. My buddy rides a Harley with a 1.6 liter engine. It's nice, if your reving it past 3k rpm your wasting your time. The Yamaha FZ6 didn't wake up until 8 grand. I think that our hobby is blessed with such incredible diversity that you can pick what ever you want, and there is still room for others. BTW that Vintage sea foam green royal enfield bullet 500 with a matching cozy sidecar really turns me on. I miss all my old bikes. I wish I had the room to put one of each in my garage, and the time to ride them. On that note I really appreciate your guys posting pictures of the rally's that I don't get to attend. It gives me the chance to attend without being there and share in the fun. Keep it up, maybe one day I'll have enough seniority to bid a rally off and really attend.

Al, I am so retired I can't even remember working full time. I have a little part time job at the local PD for motorcycle money. I am located in Murfreesboro, TN, 30 miles SE of Music City. We lived in Atlanta for almost 30 years. Our home was inside the perimeter, not far from Northside Hosp.

The ST1100 was Honda`s best touring (leaning towards sport) ride Honda ever built. Of course the ST is better than a GL/CX , but wait 20 years from now & see what the ST2000cc owners say about the ST1100`s. It`s a shame Honda doesn`t put a shaft on the VFR`s (now that would be the bike to have).

The upcoming VFR1200 features shaft drive (as well as some totally far-out shit like switchable cylinders, throttle-by-wire, dual-clutch gearbox...).

Nothing sounds more like a motor boat than a the ST series machines, for sure.
Yep, you win, our CX/GL series machines can not complete when sounding like a boat motor is concerned.

Personally, I don't give a rat's ass if you miss it or not miss it. Next month you'll be a political prisoner, so it doesn't matter. They're coming to get you, Ron.

I too am a proud owner of an ST1100. Great bike, far more comfortable for what I use it for than my CX, but a bit heavy for around-town type stuff. But at 80 mph on the freeway on a 200 mile trip, it is wonderful and I have never regretted buying it.
If the CX/GL series had continued, perhaps the ST would not have been created and we'd be talking about the CX1000. The point being, they are over 10 years apart in age and have a vast difference in engine size and weight...so its not really comparing apples to apples.

Jim, I agree. I had an 82 GL, then I bought a 2000 ST. There is no real way to compare the bikes. I always considered the V 4 a natural progression from the twisted twin. Of course adding a sidecar to the ST brought me into a whole new world. For errands around town the hack is great. Being on 3 wheels eliminates the extra effort that low speed putzing around town requires. On the other hand for sheer fun on the local highways (under 200 miles) I will be riding my "new" 83 GL. I feel I now have the best of both worlds. Lets see what Rich in Conn. has to say. He owns GLs & CXs and also had an ST which he sold. What say you Rich?? Gene

Did you ride an ST to Nova Scotia? That is a trip that intrigues me...

Jim, the avatar of my hack that I just replaced was taken in the summer of 08 at a camp ground either in Alaska or British Columbia. Don Seedsman & I left Murfreesboro, TN on 6/6/08 and returned on 8/22/08 after a 15,256 mile trip to Alaska and back across Canada (well north of the border)to Nova Scotia, then Prince Edward Island and back into the states in time to stop at the 08 Amish in Pa. This was a trip I had planned for 2 years & almost didn't make it thanks to a heart attack in Oct. of 07. I added the sidecar and Don flew over from Oz and thanks to him I was able to make the trip. I have been posting pictures on the trip on my PhotoBucket account.

There are several albums there, just work you way to the Alaska Canada 2008. The albums are nested in each other and my newest avatar picture is in Alaska Canada Chip 2 I am still posting, between Don & I we only took 3,577 pictures! Gene
PS: Since I know you & many others on this board didn't get a chance to meet Don at the 08 Amish, heres a picture of him at the same spot.

"Lets see what Rich in Conn. has to say. He owns GLs & CXs and also had an ST which he sold. What say you Rich??"
The ST1100 had no govenor, neither did I, gv'nr. First, I'd have lost my license, then eventually, probably my life. I like to make my bikes work, and on an ST, that's just way too fast for the Boston/Washington eastern corridor. The feeling I get on my 650s at 80 mph wasn't there for me until past 100 on the ST. The 650s go way past 80, and the ST went way past 100 though, and there's the rub, for me. I'm just not a good enough rider to be tooling around at 110 on an ST. I had a great year on it, and it's a great machine. It lives about 100 yards away now, at the neighbor's. Ironically, in the same garage as when I owned it (I lived there for a few years). Zoom zoom zoom. Snowmobile season is coming! 1998 Artic Cat ZR600. 100 hp, in my mind. Think SNOW

Rich, I just had a great thought. What you need to do is buy a mid 90s ST, put a hack on it and you have a machine that has a governor, you can ride in snow and in a pinch you can use it as a truck! Check the ST owners site there are usually several for sale, maybe you could get Phil to build you a hack! Uh oh, I just went too far.... Gene

I have a Velorex on a '76 CB500T, in the old days (when even you were young, Gene ) I ran it on a 350 Jawa 2-stroke, even on the interstate (where it seized once, but after 10 minutes freed up and I went on my merry way, minus the load I emptied from my pants ). As for Phil designing/building a hack, I'll wait and see.
I have a different idea for my ride this coming August to "The Rally".

Rich, I resemble that remark, "in the old days (when even you were young, Gene " However, if you really want to go back, make it 1952 & a Whizzer, then I was young! I like that last remark, just casually tossed out, "I have a different idea for my ride....." That is typical Rich, begin to build the suspence, living is great! Gene

Oh Gene, the 2010 National will be the best yet, I feel it in my bones! We need an international celebrity to attend! Not just one of those "ordinary" Canadians, but someone FAMOUS in CX/GL circles and from far away. I'm thinking Don, Sture, Shep, or the Spanish BEE would be candidates of considerable notoriety. There are others to nominate I'm sure. For a properly august guest of honor, I'll bet we could put together a right proper hosting, eh?
A whizzer, Gene? They were real old when I was a kid!

Keith, I don't know why you are upset, during my travels I was told any Canadian was worth any two Americans! You mean thats not true? Gene
