Mid Ohio Vintage Motorcycle Days

We really should try to make a group meet here.  With even 5-6 members we could have an exponentially greater time!  "Basecamp headquarters" or offsite motel base, or a little of both.  A couple of local members to anchor the event would help a lot.  I go about every other year and enjoy it HUGELY!  It can be a full 2-3 days.

Since I hail from the Buckeye state I am willing help with a Base camp. What did you have in mind?  There is a very nice State Park not too far from Mid Ohio called Mohican. The park offers class A sites with great showers, laundry facilities, and pads that range  from electric only to full hook up.  The Class B area offers basic sites with no electric and good old pit toilets.  The park also offers cabins that are well equipped and a very nice lodge.

Mohican is a nice park, and the ride between the park and Mid Ohio are great roads.

Not while you are on the bike , Gene.

Safari, All ideas are up for consideration,  The camping I was thinking of was to get 2,3, or more side by side camp sites inside MidOhio facility.  It's noisy all night, and some don't like that, but I've always done it that way and liked being in the thick of it.  A screen tent, a few chairs, a cooler and a grill, it's convenient to retreat to during the day for a break or a meal too.  1-1/2 years ago we stayed a (some) motel ten miles away the night before, and that would work for a HQ too, I remember thinking.  Then we stayed inside camping in the family tent area for two nights.   There were other riders at the motel.  I was with bro Dave, we trailered his old Triumph and I took a '79 Cx500C, which was the smallest, lightest, most convenient bike for me that summer.  You need a bike to move around inside MidOhio, and there's thousands of them there.  By Saturday evening we needed some peace and quiet, so we went out and cruised the farmland for a couple of hours on the bikes.  That was a beautiful contrast to being inside.  Other than that, we were "inside" all the time, in a sort of a time machine.

But Rich, it has a seat belt, I can't fall off!!  If, I say If all is going well in early July I may show up on the hack, pulling the camper.  That is very iffy, but I would like to get some use of the camper & the weather should not be as hot as the Amish in August.

If the consensus is to camp I can provide a lot of the camp equipment. Camp chairs, firewood, pie irons, stoves, lanterns, water, coolers, ice, and awnings, etc... Between scouting with my son, and years of rallying with the camper, we've built up a lot of equipment. Perhaps it would make it easier for those of you that must travel a distance to not worry about carrying extra equipment.

Mohican is the most popular state part in the Ohio parks system and it fills up fast. There are sites along the waterway that are large enough to setup six tents. I am also willing to take my camper up to use as a base camp and chuck wagon. Tents can be put on the same lot as campers but the total number of persons per lot is limited to six. I am also willing to stay at the campground Thursday through Monday to ensure a smooth weekend. Keep in mind that Mohican is a very popular place and reservations should be made early if good sites are wanted.

Follow this link to a few photos of a vintage rally, then drop into the folder for "Omelet in a bag".  Omelets in a bag have been a Sunday morning tradition at our camp rallies for years. Email me if anyone is interested.

I would very much like to make it up there this year. I have been going to the Barber Vintage Festival for four or so years now and really enjoy it, I keep telling myself I need to make it to Mid Ohio as well.

My preference would be to camp and would be up for sharing part of the cost of a "base camp spot". I camp out every year at Barber and it is nice to have the base camp setup. Maybe I can work it into the schedule this year.

Safari, (gosh, I have a browser by that name!), how far is this park from the rally site.  I was at the rally several years ago (the year of Mud!) & I manaaged to drop my ST twice, ouch.  However the mud was soft, just messy.  I wound up going to what became the last Goldwing homecoming at the Honda plant that doesn't make Goldwings anymore.  I would like to commit to camping but I can't really promise I will even be there.  My health gets in the way sometimes.  If others decide to camp I will try to join, I just can't promise.  I pull a Lil Bunkhouse behind my ST1100 hack, my other bike is now a new 1983 GL650 Interstate.  The 83 is going to the Amish rally but it will be in a trailer or in the back of my pick up.  The omlet in a bag looked promiseing, I was a little startled by the woman with no face but you get used to it quickly.

Mohican is not too far from Mid Ohio, but it is not next door. Checkout GOOGLE maps to determine distance. If the weather permits I'm going to the park tomorrow to checkout sites. Please keep in mind that Mohican is not the only option. If someone knows of a better place that is closer I'm open.

Safari,   I'm 47 yrs a scout(er).     My preference would be a camp inside the MidOhio facility, but that doesn't mean everyone needs to camp there.  It is noisy at night, some have trouble with that for sleeping.  Me, after a lifetime of scouting, I can sleep on a bed of hot nails in a foundry.  But having a base there would give us a gathering and chillin' place to kick back and either recharge or relax.  And have a cool beverage or a meal.  One point I've learned though, tent camping is much worse in the RV area, as they run generators all night (against the posted rules, but that's what happens anyway).  Family tenting area is much better.  These ideas all sound good, and except for Mohican reservations, the other details have time to be worked out.  I would likely come with 1-2 others from Connecticut.  Having some folks helping from Ohio would make a huge difference!

Scouting with the troop, or packed together at a jamboree is a lot of fun. The noise is different at scout outing. Laughing, people falling over tent lines at night, and scout leaders shouting at the troop pyromaniac's ability to sneak pocket torches or other incendiary devices. Every troop I've ever worked with has one kid the seems to be a human torch. Good memories.

I can understand the concern about mixing RVs and tents together, but Mohican does not have that problem. Each site at Mohican has 50amp service so even the biggest coaches never run generators. The large coaches also tend to gravitate toward the full hookup sites leaving tent friendly sites along the waterway for tenter's. I've camped there many times and the only noise one normally hears are the sounds of young children.

I have never camped at Mid-Ohio so I have no idea what to expect. I think I'll drive up there Saturday and take a look. If anyone in the area would like to meet up drop me a line.

Safari, I am leaning toward staying on site.  I have googled the park in relation to the race track and I think I would rather go up, settle in & stick for the duration.  When I was up there before I was going to camp on site but it had rained a lot that year & the campground was a mud hole, I dropped my ST, twice, in the mud!  That is not a bike to ride in mud!  If the forecast looks like mud again, I will probably come but will stay in a motel off site.  Its hard to drop a hack in the mud, you can get stuck but hard to fall over!  BTW, I was active in scouting for many years and think it is a great program.  We camped regardless of the weather & the boys learned more on the bad weather camp outs than the good ones, where all they did was play!

Rich, If I can make it I would camp in the track.

I've made it to a couple of the IndyCar races there and stayed in the campground all weekend, I agree it's awesome to be right there and never too far from a cool beverage and rest when needed. I've wanted to attend the motorcycle weekend before but never had anyone to go with so this sounds good to me.

This trip actually seems more do-able to me than the rallies because it's about half the miles and I can take less time away from the family to do it.

I've gotta sit down with the wife and plan out all my "Events" as she calls them for the year but I think this is a good one so pencil me in.

David, I didn't make myself clear, the mud holes were the roads!  Before we reached Dawson City & even worse on the Top of the World Highway where you had no shoulder, road elevation was above 4200 feet and if you ran off the road it would take a week to reach the bottom of the slope mud holes could cover the road from side to side with no problem.  It was great!  Your cartoon is cute, what does your wife call you "Sweet Cheeks"

BTW this was one of the mud hole highways.  Don was driving & I took this picture from the sidecar, the hack was having a hard time getting traction, that hill was much steeper than it looks!

This was the Cassiar highway in western BC.  Don's comment was "The Canadians should be ashamed of themselves, calling this bloddy goat track, a highway!"  I very much agreed with him.

If i can fit it in I'd love to go. I know someone else who regularly goes. Usually he takes one of his Guzzi's but he does have a CX500 deluxe with full fairing and saddle bags...I'll have to get ahold of him and see if he's going this year. If he goes,  I'll be there...

Don, you are absolutely correcct but was it Maine or New York?  I remember it was Highway 2 (whatever state) and once again you were driving!  That part of the Cassiar highway stuck with me, I guess because of your comment about it being a goat track!

Keith, It's not so much the width of the "track" as the surface irregularities. Many goats in Oz get to suffer "lead poisoning" if they get too big.

yflyer, thanks for getting the thread back on track!  I apologize for my horse play.  As I said earlier I am committed to come, on the hack & pulling my camper.  I will probably camp at Mid-Ohio, either with Rich or somewhere in the neighborhood.  Only if my ticker starts mis-ticking will I not be there.

Rich, Jon used to attend every year, have you been in touch with him lately?  Also, have you made reservations to camp yet?  If you remember from the Amish my camper is about as big as a large tent so it should not be a problem.  If you need some money from me, well dream on!   No, just kidding, I will be glad to share the cost & will send you a (rubber) check asap.

Keith, what you should do is make a wish list from the Canadian CX/GL community, come to Mid-Ohio and do some shopping!  If you just find it we can get it shipped, if nothing else we can load parts in my camper and I can mail them to you from the Boro.  I will have to admit the year I was there I only saw a few CXs but I was only in the boneyard for a short time but maybe Rich can elaborate on this based on his many visits.

Camping at Mid Ohio is somewhat casual, despite what the website says.  One needs to purchase a weekend track ticket AND a camp reservation, but there is no need to do it real early.  It's best to buy these ahead of time though, saves the line at the gate.  The campsites are smallish (40 x 40'?) squares in a field, with wide right of ways/drive lanes every second campsite row.  You show your pass at the camp entrance, go in and claim a site, and report it back to the office.  Leave something at the site, like a tent set up, or a banner.  No specific site reservations ahead of time, first come, first serve, and possession is 9/10, etc.  I think what would work best is for someone who plans to be there early Friday morning (by 9:00 AM ?) and who has solid, prepaid requests from others, go in and claim as many contiguous sites as required, maybe 3 or 4.  That might be me.  They say they limit vehicles and tents per site, but I've never seen any enforcement of this.  Fires are supposed to be off the ground in pans too, but ground campfires are to be found.  By Friday afternoon, I've not seen any checking of camping passes at the camp field entrance either.  The attendants get glassy eyed.  The state of Ohio has put their regular standard camping regulations on Mid Ohio, so they put the requirements in the website.  But they pretty much ignore any enforcement of them.

All that said, camping inside isn't for everyone.  Plastic outhouses, locker room type gang showers, etc.  If some would prefer to stay in a motel, make reservations early, as this is a huge event.  My suggestion would be to try to name a motel that all motelling CX/GL folks would stay at together, it will add to the fun I think.  Local motels will have a noticeable number of riders in residence, and my experience is they are by and large a real nice bunch of folks.  This is NOT STURGIS!  Or Laconia.  Or Daytona.  Aside:  I once asked a HD friend who regularly goes to Daytona how he liked the races.  His reply?  "Are there races there?"

I have not seen nor heard from Jon G. since his disappointment a number of years ago at VMD when the substantial number of CX/GL folks who led him to believe they were coming did not, leaving a couple of us to drink the entire keg of iced beer he brought.  And food for many.  I heard he got a GW and hangs with that type now.  They're probably eating good!

The swap meet is huge, but you have to know what you are looking for.  The sellers often don't know what bikes their parts are from or fit.  I enjoy just seeing all the stuff and whole bikes there.  At VMD, every conceivable bike ever made is there, being ridden, or in the swop meet as parts.  Every one.

Gene,
If my "deal" goes through (wink wink) i may make it to the Mid-Ohio meet.
But it also depends on my "on call" status at work for that weekend.
I would be planning on camping there from late friday night until early Sunday morning :-)

If all goes well with work and whatnot. I'm definitely in. If anyone plans on gathering money to get multiple campsites somewhere let me know. My bike is ready to ride except for a cam chain/valve adjustment and some fork seals. Other than those things it's all making it pretty with the pile of parts I've collected over the winter (mac slip-on mufflers, powder coated black valve covers, silver tank and side covers, luggage rack/backrest, shiny not so pitted rear shocks, etc...etc...etc...lol)

I live an hour away from the event so I'm planing on riding my bike up there assuming I pass my license test . Anyway I think it would be great to meet some of you guys if you guys do get together (and show off my bike so my hard work doesn't go unappreciated) but I will be staying in the comforts of my apartment. Defiantly keep me updated on what everyone is doing though.

Mid-Ohio keeps the time machine ticking with AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days on July 9-11. The 16th annual classic bike weekend will see enthusiasts and riders travel from all across the country to sell, buy and trade gear and parts as part of North America’s largest motorcycle swap meet. Fans can watch riders race their historical machines around the track in over a dozen classes and listen to iconic motorcycle figures in a series of seminars.

Husqvarna has been named Marque of the Year of the 2010 AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days

http://www.amavintagemotorcycledays.com/

This event will be what they will be talking about in PA in August!

I have VMD on my calendar for this year. I've heard so many interesting stories from Rich, I guess I just have to see it for myself. Besides I don't do enough camping as of late and motorcycle camping would be double duty for me

The ride out and back will be an "adventure" in itself. What's that quote about the journey and the destination again?

Looking forward to seeing all of my CX/GL pals in July and meeting some new ones as well.

Craig Vetter is supposed to be there again this year. According to his website he is going to be working on or introducing his final slipstreamer. I heard him speak abouit 10 yrs ago and it was informational.

The conglomeration of used parts in the venders area allows much reminiscing.
