Suggestion. No gravel. I'll mark my calender and see what happens.  After last year I might be riding solo.

I've heard good things about Hennepin County Road 6.  Here's a route via 6 to Watertown, returning on Cty Rd 15 along Lake Minnetonka (71 miles, about 2:40).  Anyone know a good spot in Watertown for a break and a bite?

Greg,  you did a lot of wandering last fall.  Any ideas?

Here's the same Hwy 6 route to Watertown, with a longer return following Cty Rd 16 along the Crow River to Dayton, crossing the Mississppi at Champlin, and finishing via the East River Road (91 miles, about 3:20).

I mapped a bunch of rides last summer.  I'll try to dig the up.

Here's a route on the west side of the river up to Monticello, then through Big Lake up to the Sand Dunes area, and back through Elk River and down Hwy 10 and the East River Road (98 miles, about 3:20).

Nate, could you suggest some nice roads to include up there?  And maybe a spot for a mid-ride break / lunch?

Thanks,

R

I'm not too sure about Watertown although I could check it out!!  There is a place in Waconia, Lola's Lake House, a little south of Watertown, that is pretty cool and sits right on Lake Waconia.   It might be a litte fancy and I'm not sure how they would take to a visit from a Biker Gang but here it is:

http://www.lolaslakehouse.com/

There are a couple of places in Maple Grove, Mama G's and the Lookout, that we see a lot of Bikes at in the summer and are a little bit rougher than Lola's.  Both have more space and outdoor options but no lake views:

http://www.mamags.com/

http://www.lookoutbarandgrill.com/

Having not been on this, or any motorcycle ride, I guess I'm not sure what you are looking for.  I live up here in Maple Grove though so I would be willing to go check anything out if you really want to come out west this year.

Here is another place I've always thought would be fun.  I don't think it is as big as the others but I love the name.

http://www.innkahootsbar.com/

It's in Hamel,  55 and 101, down by Medina, south of Maple Grove.

Let me know if you want me to check anything out and I will ask around about Watertown too!!

Lola's should have plenty of space, especially if we're out on the deck, and they pretty much serve all kinds, our mild-mannered group wouldn't bug them, I should think.

Thanks, Randall. I plan on being there.

We could head down southeast along the Mississippi. then jump across the river and come back up on the WI side.

But, the other suggestions are fine as well...

I was just reminded that the Camden Bridge will be closing for repairs in March, so we won't be able to cross the river on the parkway.  If we choose to go west, we'll need to cross at Broadway.

As far as a place to stop there is KJ's refuge in orrock just north of Big lake and to get there you take Eagle lake road ( CR5 ) north out of big lake and its on the right in orrock And the map shows the roads I would take back to Elk River for the best view of the area. google map

Add me to the list...I've put this date on my calendar.

I did a couple of short rides last summer, I'll get my notes out and add those routes to the mix here.

We can then get a consensus from the group.

I'm toying with the notion of making an 800+ mile ride. On the bike this time. Possibly taking friday off and leaving early.
Well just have to see what happens after I warm the bike up in the spring. Only 3 more months to go.

Nate's adjustment of the proposed route looks good.  That stretches it to 100 miles, about 3:25.

Thanks, Nate.

P.S.  That long string is making the browser window about 3 miles wide.  Please edit your post, and either delete the address (David and I have both made live copies), or if you are using Firefox, enclose it with "[YOU ARE EL=" and "]Route[/YOU ARE EL]", replacing "YOU ARE EL" with "url".  Don't include the quotes.

Hint:  If you're using Firefox, you can use the quote function to see how a link is formatted.

Thanks.

I found my list of routes, so let's add these to the possibilities:

1. Minneapolis -> Hastings -> Stillwater -> Minneapolis (91 miles, about 2:40)

2. Round trip Minneapolis to Hastings along each side of the river.  (78 miles, about 2:25)

3. Similar to previous, but extended to Red Wing. (124 miles, about 3:35)

4. Same as previous, but diverting onto Pierce Cty RD O in Wisconsin (nice looking road on the map). (132 miles, about 4:15)

5. Like the last one, but returning via Stillwater. (138 miles, about 4:25)

If we decide to head down the river, my inclination is toward the 4th option.  Any opinions?

Well I liked the idea of my Elk river rout but now that you brought up Redwing that sounds like a lot more fun, there's great scenery down there and many good places to eat like Bierstube (my favorite) on the north east side of town. I would agree with Randall and taking rout 4

Travel to Minnesota from Missoula; according to mapquest: 16 hours 42 minutes / 1182.98 miles. Huh. Better to put the bike into Great White, drive out on a Thursday morning 5-20 to arrive Saturday. Motel stop overs. Return trip for arrival back home Monday night 5-24. Do-able. Or better yet, trailer the bike behind the VW camper bus, and save motel costs by sleeping in VW. Nah, Motels more comfortable. Anyone need a ride along my route? 90 & 94? Got to lose that damn milk crate. Driving the 4-color Fugly is passable because it is so buff. But leathers and helmet on bike, punctuated by a milk crate, is just too embarrasing and tacky. Note to self: Lose the crate before May.

Randall and the Group,

I put my vote in for option #5.

I had the chance last summer to ride the route through Afton with my Bride and it is a great road to ride.

Coming from the South there are a few nice twisties and cuts to ride on/through and hitting HWY 36 before getting into Stillwater is a VERY good idea!!

Still looking for my ride notes from last summer....

What's wrong with the milk crate?  I have a red one that I strap on the back sometimes to run errands.  I'll even mount it for the Spring Ride, if it makes you feel better.

Should we take Cty Rd 21 as I had mapped, or should we stay closer to the river on MN-95 north of Afton?

Here's a modified Route 5 with the first leg moved to the east side of the Mississippi.  The ride below the downtown St.Paul bluff is more interesting than Hwy 55.  I also decided to stay on Cty Rd 21 between Afton and Stillwater, as it appears to be more rural on the satellite image.  This puts us at 135 miles and right about 4 hours.

I wonder if I shouldn't reverse this, so we'll be finishing on the River Road, instead of on Hwy 36?

Opinions, please.

Thanks,

R

Twin Cities Spring Ride, here I come. I'll be leaving Thursday morning 5-20 from Missoula, Montana, travelling eastwards on 90. I've taken Thursday, Friday, and Monday off to accommodate Attendance. I plan for arrival to the meeting location on Saturday morning. This will be my first good sized road trip for the Summer Season.

I had the chance last summer to ride the route through Afton with my Bride and it is a great road to ride.

Coming from the South there are a few nice twisties and cuts to ride on/through and hitting HWY 36 before getting into Stillwater is a VERY good idea!!

Should we take Cty Rd 21 as I had mapped, or should we stay closer to the river on MN-95 north of Afton?

R

As you have it mapped is great!

The road North of Afton is rather straight and ho-hum (except the traffic circles), so CR 21 works well.

Thanks,

R

Hi Randall,

My thought on this is to start on River Road and finish on Hwy 36.

My reasoning is that we are fresh starting out going through the "street" traffic and later on at the end of the ride, Hwy 36 is more a straight shot to your place.

Has anyone ridden Pierce County O?  Is it better from north or south?  There's an easy cross-over at Hastings, so we could take it either direction without changing the overall route.

Thanks,

R

Randall, I may or maynot have been on county O but I do know that any alphabet road in WI is a good one. And, by the way they are (almost) never gravel.

I know that right now you aren't planning on going this far south but the county roads around Maiden Rock are really cool. Take a look at 'S' and "CC":
http://www.wisconline.com/counties/pierce/map.aspx

Also check out N and D in Pepin county...
http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/travel/maps/docs/counties/pepin.pdf
(perhaps we are getting too far from home.)

Another fun fact is that one of the county roads around these areas runs by Laura Ingall's "Little House in the Woods". I happened across it once.

Off topic, but for over a decade, I have been a Navigator & Mechanic for a variety of classic car road rally's. But those were all on the West Coast, and not Motorcycle events. Google "Road Rally Montana" and you don't find much. What you do find are motorcycle rally's. Anyway, I still drive to Portland, Oregon several times per year to "Nag-ivate" and keep the antique car on the road. This bike ride might be totally fun. Let's find out. I'm looking forward to this "Twin Cities Spring Ride 2010." Woo-hoo!

Randall,

If you go to the map and hit satellite view you can see that Cty O is paved.

Satellite view will show a lot of things if you zoom in on it ...

I figured out after last year's Ride that by turning off the labels in the satellite view in Google Maps I can sometimes see what is paved or unpaved (usually by the painted lines.)

I know that Cty O is paved.  I'm just not sure which direction to ride it.

That's great to hear, Clifford!  You'll be sure to win the "Farthest Traveled" Award, except that we, umm... don't have one.

Would you accept first choice from the grill?

There is no need for any of that. "Longest distrance travelled" award need not be created, nor first grille choice. Nope. But I have learned something. It appears you are doing a Pot Luck. That means I need to bring something. Am I correct on both Pot Luck and Bring something?

Well pot luck is it's own statement. It is appreciated if you bring a pot of something but good luck getting it there on a bike. Last year David in Wisconsin drove in and ended up cooking cookies at Waynes place. I on the other hand just made it there leaving my place after work in the truck and arriving at Graywolf's at midnight or a bit later to unload the bike the that morning. No chance to cook anything but I would offer to pick up some chips or other from the store.

No need to bring anything , if it's a pain to transport.  For the locals with luggage, it's easy to bring a pot luck item, but for those coming from out of town, or without the means to carry, don't worry about it.
