Twin Cities Spring Ride - Final Notice
|
|
|
|
|
2nd Annual Twin Cities Spring Ride Saturday, May 9, 2009
The route is
here.
Meet at my house beginning at 8:30 AM, departing as close to 9:00 as we can manage. If you will be late Saturday morning, please call 612-781-0343. If you arrive after the group leaves, there will be maps to Dennis Kirk via I-35, so you can meet us there.
The ride will be followed by a potluck barbeque. If you can, please bring something to share. I will provide burgers, hotdogs, and brats, as well as soft drinks. If you like chicken or chops in your own super-secret marinade, feel free to bring that. Otherwise, a side or desert would be great. Refrigerator space will be available. If you don't have the on-bike capacity to carry a dish, don't worry about it, just come.
If you plan to ride with us, but haven't responded, please do so. Even last minute additions are welcome.
The current list of attendees is:
Blindstitch (+1) Coodie DavidfromWisconsin Dobie drneo edcx500 Graywolfs02 (+1) Jack in Minneapolis (+1) JackTheFool mikeinwis R.MANDILE Randall-in-Mpls saltwatersurf uprubicon14 WayneDW
If you don't receive an email with my address, please let me know.

List updated.
Mikeinwis is going to meet us at Dennis Kirk. If anyone else is planning the same, I expect we'll arrive there between 10:30 and 11:00.
The weather Saturday is supposed to be cool and windy. Some forecasters are calling for rain in the morning. Please come prepared. Morning rain would have the most impact on those coming from outside the metro area. If anyone decides Saturday morning to bow out, please call or shoot me an email, so we don't wait around for you.
Thanks,

By the way, if anyone is wondering what they might need at Dennis Kirk.... They carry the Iridium spark plugs, in stock. I was just there today since I was driving by anyhow to work on a friend's cabin.
Picked up a pair, I wanted to have them in the bike before the ride to see what all the hype is about. I'll let you know if I notice any difference when we get there.
$10.50 each plus tax, but no shipping charges! (Plugs for the 650, I assume they will have them for the 500 as well)
Also, it will be a good idea to check out their web site and know part numbers before you get there. They have almost nothing on display in their warehouse store, you pick up a phone and tell the warehouse operator what you want, then they bring it up to the store. Perhaps all of you knew this before, today was my first visit there.
As mentioned previously, there is also a scratch and dent store out by the freeway which is full of stuff to look through.

Thanks so much to Randall for organizing this Spring Ride, for hosting us and providing the brats and burgers in his back yared. It was great time, good to meet some new CX/GL lovers and re-acquant with some old.
It was a bit of a chilly day but a fun ride, never the less. I especially enjoyed the surprise to all of the gravel roads. Those are the surprises that make an event memorable.
Thanks Randall, we really appreciate it and thanks to the rest as well, it was a great day.
By the way, I hope to get copies of pictures from those of you with working cameras.
thanks again,

If everyone on your list showed up, You're off to a better second rally than the HTTA Amish rally's second. I understand the Twin Cities title, but, didn't you guys get together directly or indirectly through your association with other CX/GL bikes? Would not that make it the HTTA Twin Cities Rally?
Gee, some of you even wear the patch.

Great meeting everyone on the ride! Thanks for the planning and hospitality, Randall and family. Well the Twin Cities Spring Ride featured cold temps and some gravel roads. Next year we should add a river crossing. I will soon be taking 60 just south of Zumbrota east to Wabasha. Very twisty and scenic. At Wabasha cross over into Wisc. and take 35 north. Anyone is welcome to join me. Shane

A great big thanks to Randall for putting this together and hosting a great BBQ. It was a great pleasure meeting everyone. Speaking of gravel roads- just washed them off the bike- its so pretty, I'm almost afraid to ride it...nah. Just a few of the things I learned - Cookies make you smart (and the way Dave from Wisconsin makes em, I must be Einstein about now). Goose-ka-bobs are way better than painting with goose droppings. Randall is an offroader at heart. And you can't start a CX in gear with the clutch out. :P
To anyone lurking (like myself until recently)- you'll be hard pressed to meet a more fun, friendly, and knowledgeable group of people to ride with- what are you waiting for?
Thanks again!

Randall,
Great ride, great food and wonderful company.
I forgot to say it at Randall's house at the end of the day, but that was one of the best group rides I have ever been on. Everyone worked the stagger, stayed in line unless they made it clear they were leaving. and Randall did a great job of working to keep the group together. You all deserve a pat on the back for making it so good.
I really do think that the radio communication help keep the group as tight as it was and the simple code seemed to work well.
I don think we could avoid the gravel roads next year, especially if I am bringing up the rear of the pack again. Candy was covered with dist and I didn't need to brush my teeth last night, as they were already scoured with the dust! I really didn't mind that much, but if we had any people who hadn't ridden on gravel we might have had a problem.
Wayne, thank you and your lovely wife for putting me up and putting up with my cookie and brownie making.
Randall, I hope the girls have come down from the sugar high ... but I heard somewhere that it makes them smarter!
Thank you everyone for a great time. I am already planning on coming back ...

Hey guys. I just got home. Melody says thanks for everyone willing to ride in their underwear that gave her extra cloths to wear or offered. All in all it was pretty good. Fire more degrees would have made it a bit nicer but that's the luck of the draw. I only took a few photos but here they are.

I had intended to start a new thread for the ride report, but I had a full Sunday, and you guys beat me to it, so we'll do it here.
We started with thirteen riders on eleven bikes, getting underway around 9:30 (which is about what I expected) :
Blindstitch and Melody Coodie DavidfromWisconsin Dobie drneo Graywolfs02 and Joyce JackTheFool Randall-in-Mpls ronj10 saltwatersurf WayneDW
The first leg from Minneapolis up to Rush City was very cold. Not having ridden the route before, and trusting GoogleMaps' directions a little too much, I almost missed a couple turns. Stopping to check the map in Wyoming (MN), I was reminded that the CX won't start with the transmission in gear and the clutch engaged. I'm always relieved when it's just me being stupid, and not a real mechanical failure. (By the way, David, I've been eating those cookies since you left, and I don't think they're helping.)
We arrived at Dennis Kirk about 11:30 to meet mikeinwis. He'd been there since 10:30, but it gave him time to scout out the public restrooms in town. (There isn't one at the Dennis Kirk warehouse, and only a Port-a-John at their Scratch-and-Dent store over by I-35.) After a little shopping at both stores, ronj10 (the wise one in the group, apparently) headed home to be warm.
The rest of us got "off the beaten path," so to speak. We discovered that east-central Minnesota has lots of gravel roads (which explains the long estimated travel time), and that the satellite resolution on GoogleMaps isn't high enough to tell the difference. For those who didn't grow up on dirt bikes, I can see the experience being a little unnerving. Jason, I'm glad I could help you get over that unhealthy new-paint obsession. That new Boulevard is gorgeous, by the way. It's the prettiest trail bike I've ever seen.
Surprisingly, there's a really nice stretch of pavement in the middle of all that dirt.
Once we were back on gravel again, I realized that a good bit of our route along the river would be more of the same. So instead of turning left at a T in the road, we turned right and found MN-95 in about 3 miles. The rest of the ride to Taylor's Falls was much better, but still cold.
We had a late lunch (or breakfast) in Taylor's Falls, then said good-bye to Mike, who headed back to Birchwood. The sun finally came out, and the ride back to Minneapolis was a little bit warmer (and a lot cleaner.) Greg turned aside at Hwy 10 to take Joyce home (she'd reached her frostbite limit), and joined us at my house later.
We arrived home at 4:30. My wife had the grill going, and we settled into some serious sitting around and chatting.
Exactly 150 miles on my odometer, in seven hours, with a couple long breaks in the middle.
My wife Heidi shot a few pics before we left (click for the full-size image):
My 4-year-old wanted to join us, but I thought she'd have trouble keeping up and convinced her to stay home.

DavidinWisconsin, our group riding guru, offers some pre-ride instruction. To his left are Don (Blindstitch), Melody, and Ron (ronj10.)

To Ron's left are Paul (Coodie), Shane (saltwatersurf), Charlie (Dobie), Thom (drneo), and Joyce (Greg's better half.)

To Joyce's left are Greg (Graywolfs02), Jason (JackTheFool), and Wayne (WayneDW.)

"I'll only be gone for FIVE HOURS, honest!" (I don't know, I think I was just waving.)

Mounting up. I was pleased to see everyone in a helmet and other good riding gear.

Heading out. Follow the big red tomato.

My thanks to all who attended, especially Melody and Joyce, and my apologies for the trail rides and the cold weather.

It looks like you guys really had a great time! BTW there is no reason to apologize for the weather, thats the one thing no one can control! We were very lucky with the weather at TWO. Its great to see pictures of that many twisted twins out having fun, maybe some day I can get my old bones up that way and join you all.

Unbundle your shorts, Phil. You must have missed the MTTA reference in the earlier thread. The MTTA is our local chunk of what you started way back when. (Thank you for that, by the way.) We've even borrowed from the parent group's organizational structure (minimal) and by-laws (non-existent.)
If you request a name change, I'm sure we can accommodate you, but I believe it's generally understood that since we meet here, we're part of the HTTA.

Randall,
Thanks again to you, Heidi and the girls for hosting the Spring Ride......
Both Joyce and I had a great time and it was good to break in the new bike and let my Bride see how well it rode with the two of us (summer weekend trips here we come!!)
Let me know if/when you would like to "test ride" any new routes for future rides of the Minnesota chapter of the HTTA, I'd be delighted to go with!!

Just wanted to chime in with a big THANK YOU to Randall for his time and effort to put this thing together. Sorry to have dined and dashed, next year I promise to have a better schedule. The electric vest paid for itself both during the ride and as I rode to Iowa.
Patiently waiting for the next get together....

It was incredibly fun. Thanks a lot for putting it together Randall. And thanks a ton to drneo (Thom) for lending me your hoodie sweatshirt! It helped out with the cold a lot.
To think, if I didn't go on this ride, I may never know what it is like to ride on gravel!
Super fun trip. I'm looking forward to the next one! I need to invest in some better handle bars and some better gloves before the next one tho.

We felt downright cold most of the day, and a bit dusty for part of it. Not quite what I had planned for. It was great getting together, though.
Bandit, you said something before about having relocated to Spain. Where are you from originally?

randall, been living in spain for 6/7 years now, moved here from england, lived in a tiny hamlet called regil,or ridghill, depending who you talk to.its between bristol and bath in the westcountry.county of somerset.
We felt downright cold most of the day, and a bit dusty for part of it......im quite lucky here,if anything it gets too hot out in the sun...130f...got no choice, wear less clothes , drive slower and pray.dust,we get tons of it,i have to wash my bike every two days.i cant see how cold it was in the photos, can appreciate it by the write ups.just nice to see all the bikes and the comradery.im still envious.
