Choke Cable tension?

Hi everyone, it has been a long time since I have posted anything, but I do frequently pop in to see whats new. The site has really morphed quite nicely, and Stitch, your new sticky is invaluable. However my time here is very limited, so research is not on the table at the moment, hence my posted query.
For some time now, my choke cable will not stay pulled out when starting her up. Is there a tension setting somewhere that grasps that or increases the grip on it to stay where ever you choose to open it up to? Thanks in advance, and I may not get to be back here until next week.

There is a friction ring directly underneath the knob that is sheathed in rubber. Turning it clockwise increases the grip on the shaft.

Ya, that's posted in one of my manuals. Quick question - does one have to remove the rubber boot as implied in the diagram? Only reason why I ask is I'm having the same problem, and I knew there was a friction ring. However, mine keeps turning with no resistance, but I didn't remove the rubber boot. If my adjustment is toast, it's not a big deal as I purchased a new choke cable some time ago... My cable use to stay up prior to lubricating it - now I have to hold it. ;-)

Remove the rubber cover and tight lightly with the proper size wrench.
Look closely at the nut. It is not uncommon to have the plastic nut be cracked. If it is you cannot tight it.
You then have the choice of replacing the choke cable or putting a small hose clamp over the the nut to hold it closed. My bike currently has the later. It works really well at setting the tension at the level you want it.

It's a good thing Jays' diagram was about our motorcycles, and not the warmer side of life. **but it sure could be!!**

You should not have to remove the rubber boot to adjust the friction.
On mine, the friction ring with its rubber cover would pull out with the knob when I pulled on the knob. Not good. Closer examination revealed that the cable housing had sheared where the threads were to grab the friction ring. It became impossible to lock the cable housing in its normal spot on the panel. The nut tightened from the back and pushed the knob end of the cable towards me but the sheared part prevented anything from resisting when I pushed the knob forward. It required two hands to set the choke: one to hold the cable; one to hold the knob. Unacceptable.
A new cable available from Honda of Canada solved the problem. The choke cable is locked in postion and the friction ring works as it was intended. I set it once and it now holds enough friction to hold its postion while still allowing me to push the knob back in all the way without having to loosen the adjustment.
These cables are NOT available for the GL500 in the US anymore but Canada seems to have a steady supply. I couldn't say what the supply situation is for CX500s.
