Removing Rear Engine Cover
Reply Quote
I just pulled the gl500i engine and the rear cover seems to be catching about 3/16 of the way off. Is there something that I need to do yet? All bolts are out.

Have you removed the waterpump cover and impeller?  Have you removed the pulsar cover?

Not sure what all you are doing, but make sure you make a scribe mark for the original orientation of the pulse generator/spark advancer

Need to remove the pulsar assembly under the pulsar cover. Does not seem to be an issue on the CX engines, but is on the GL engines.

And if that is done, press in on the shifter shaft.  It can hang on the seal a bit, and if you pull the shaft with the cover, the spring attached to it can and will stretch out until it pops off.  Don't ask how I know this.

I have removed the impeller cover but not the pulsar cover. I'll do that. I ran into this the last time and forgot what I did to get it off. Thanks for the help. I'll be careful with the shifter assy too. Thanks a bunch. --Jon

Yeah, it's the mech. advance unit on the back of the crankshaft hanging on the rear cover.  I ran into the same problem, beat my head against it for a while, managed not to destroy anything and posted an SOS.  Within an hour I had the answer (thanks Lambykin) and five minutes later I had the cover off.  This forum is most awesome.

Just make sure you pay attention to how everything comes apart...  I took a pantload of pics.

Yes, most specifically pay attention that you don't misplace any of the three thrust washers on the left side, two on the starter gear shaft, one on the gear shift shaft, and where they go.
