Weird syncronicities everywhere these days. My buddy JUST told me about the Harley washer trick for tuning Harley pipes, now I see someone doing it to a CX. I really like that sound. I really like hearing what a proper running CX should sound like and how dissimilar it is to the sound of my bike :(. -nick

You have a 2 in 1 Exhaust. The ones in the UK are made by Motad and don't need re-jetting.I think yours do among the other problems you are having.

I've got my Fuel mileage back up to 54+ Mpg(UK gallon) from 50 and below with Harley 883 cans and as per above great power band. The Mileage is not as good as Stock pipes but a good improvement.

Just to add. The,"Combat Speed" from just over 65 miles a hour for overtaking manoeuvres is fantastic.Around  70 plus it zooms to 90 mph in no time.Had to throttle back a few times as the engine just wanted to go and go

I love it..."Combat Speed". Thats original. I too have decided to install Sportster mufflers. I saw some threads that the Dyna mufflers line up on the mounting brackets like it was made for it, but I plan on installing Hardbags this winter, and the angle of Dyna mufflers attached to mounts, wont allow me to install the hardbags I want to use. So I decided to go with Sportster mufflers with tabbed brackets attached to keep them straight and low...and I like the look of the tapered Sportster mufflers too. Since that decision I have wondered about the sound...now I don't wonder anymore. Thanx!
Don't know as though I will go the washer route...not knowing if its necessary #1,and I already planned on jetting accordingly when I change over. I remember doing this very thing to one or more of my Triumphs in the past...some things never change, huh Shep.
I see also you were having some wonderful UK weather at time of test. (sarcasm) : )

Heh Heh :D Actually Weather was OK in around my County today.Couple of very very short showers.
"Combat speed" is a derivation of,"Military speed" commonly used in my Industry when working on Fighter Planes".

Note:I have not re-jetted as I believed it was not needed with these pipes and have proved myself correct.People seem to jump straight to re-jetting when changing exhausts but in this case as the collector box is still in use and the 883s aren't bad."Out of the box" and after research I decided it was the exhausts that needed tuning and not the jets that needed changing. If I had added things like,"Pod filters" then as that really affects the fuel input side of the circuit I would then go for the jets using information from this forum.

So to recap:
We now have a source of well made cheap Exhaust replacements that can be tuned for decent economy and better  performance.Cool

PS
And they look good, sound great and allow easier access and fitting of things like Saddle bags/Army boxes etc

Huh...at first it just sounded like a...Honda. But when you went past the camera,it reminded me of stock Triumph sound...Sweet!
Nice to know this, because I picked up some Sportster mufflers off Fleabay last week, real good condition, for $1.00! Shipping was $22.00,so do the math. I'm happy.-Rog

P.S. Did you tune em with a washer, inserted inside?

Shep, what would happen if you put the washer between the H-box and the mufflers? It sure would be easier and prettier. If you did that, would  the oscillating pressures cause metal fatigue in the collector?

I don't know.I freely admit my understanding exhaust systems is limited to basics and took the mod from the Harley link. The engines need the back slug to correctly scavenge the engine.I've just taken the other set of 883s off my spare CX as even with this mod my fuel mileage goes right down. These 883s look identical to the ones on my Main CX but are straight through whereas the ones on my Main CX if you look down them have kind of a half baffle.I want the economy, not sound or power.
Both bikes run great right through the rev band and have not been re-jetted.I'm on a very tight budget so can't do a lot but was looking into some universal baffles but wouldn't know where to start cutting then to suit considering the original exhausts are longer,
