Aftermarket Speedometer/Tachometers?
Reply Quote
So my current speedometer is bouncing around a bit, and I was wondering if there were any aftermarket gauges that fit the CX500. I've found a couple that cover the speed, but are there are like the stock and that cover the speed, trip distance, engine temp, etc?

I bought a speedo and tach from oldbikebarn (http://www.oldbikebarn.com/motorcycle_parts.php?bike=&subcategory=Gauges&universal=Universal). They work well. About the only  issue was the wiring.

Thanks for your help, man! So I got a coupld of questions: First, why are they called "mini" gauges? Second, any guages that show the engine temp like the stock guage? Also, you say the wiring was weird, could you elaborate what the difficulty was?

Those same gauges are availible from JC Whitney for $39.99 each. Sometimes you can catch them on sale for $34.99 each. I used them on my CX500 chopper. This is why they're called mini:

No temp gauge. You'll have to find another gauge and mount it somewhere.

Note on that... install the temp sensor from an Ace 750 Shadow (same size and thread). The Ace has a dummy light instead of a temp gauge, and the sensor is a simple on/off switch. Wire that to a dummy light that you can stick anywhere. (I'm thinking an LED added to the handlebar cover or something).

Personally, I know how a CX500 behaves when it overheats. Different smell, runs different, and feels very hot... so I didn't even bother with the temp gauge.

I have a friend who bought an electronic bicycle speedometer and mounted it on the handle bar of his ST1100. It's a little black rectangular box and he says it works great.
Of course, no temp guage there.

They are called mini gauges as they are about 1/2 the size of the stock gauges. You can add a temp gauge if you find a place to mount one (to replace the sender you need to look for one that is m16 x 1.5 thread). As to the wiring... The speedo that I puchased had hi beam, oil, neutral , and turn signal indicator lights. What this means is that the turn signal indicator works for either direction. All it took to fix this was 2 diodes from radio shack and then just tracking down the other wires.

Thank you for the help guys!

CC, I saw your review of those guages on JC Whitneys site. THey look nice.

I've also found these guages, what do you guys think? Would I have to do much modifying?

I was looking at those electrosport ones too. I think those could be made to work, but I'm not really sure. They have all the requisite functions.
For temp you'd replace the existing sender with their sender. (Might need an adapter, but those exist, people replace their temp gauges all the time on here.) I'm not quite sure what generates our tach signal, and whether that will work or not.
Speedo should be easy. They supply a magnet & reed switch to mount on the wheel.

But a little pricey :)

i used a Trailtech Vapor... pretty similar to the Electrosport unit. On the Vapor, the tach signal is read via inductive pickup... all you need to do is wrap a wire around one of the plug wires a few times, and you're done. Of course, that still leaves the task of digging the #%R*&#@^% stock tach cable out of the darkest depths of the engine...

Considering Verizon Business service? Perhaps you'd like to consider a nice drain cleaner enema instead?

Are there any guages that allow you to replace the old ones without modification?

Hey, so what were the problems that you had with the wiring, exactly?

Really not a 'problem', more of a which wire goes where, or how do I get the two turnsignal indicators towork on one LED. Since my other hobby is building and modifying personal computers the LED issue was easy to solve (a couple of diodes from radio shack and all is well).

By the way, the tach lighting is being shared with the speedo on my bike. This allowed me to add the temp gauge and have the wiring in one bundl (combined the light circuit from the old tach and the 12v wiring from the 7v regulator into one plug).

Manofyunk...

What diodes did you get and how did you wire them in? I've been trying to figure that problem out too. I knew diodes would work, but have no idea which ones to get and how to get them into the circuit.

Yeah, it's always the small things that trip you up. My speedometer finally stopped working regularly. The speed dial doesn't move, and only the Odometer works, so I'm really looking for a nice and stylish replacement for both the speedo & tach. The problem is getting new gauges's to work with 27 year old wiring and cables....... ugh.

I've been using these computers for years.  They work great and they're easy to hardwire into the bike...just get one of those multi-adapters for car.  They're break 12dcv down to 3dcv for the computer and just solder the thing in.  Has almost no draw so you never know it.

As for the other things...I have a 250+ temp sensor and a oil sensor wired to light a red LED behind my computer's LCD...if the LCD lights up red, there's a problem.  I'm not going to worry about a tach...removing that bastard was the best way to fix my short gears.

~310mm big brake kits (CX5/applicable): starting at $125

Yeah, that's what I thought, too. But I keep thinking that the wiring won't interface well, or that I'll have to "dig deep" into the engine and modify something because they are meant to be for newer bikes, or something. What about cable and wheel ratios or temperature sensors? Is that a valid concern or am I just paranoid?

Those are definitely valid concerns, but being a digital speedo with programmable shift points and such, I am sure you can program it for wheel/tire size, or at least the distance of one tire revolution.  They have that technology in bicycle computers, so I can't imagine they wouldn't have it in their speedometer.  I also saw that they have all types of adapters, so I don't think you would have to dig too deep into the engine to get it set up...

The only suggestion I can make is that all you can do is try. By that I mean that there is enough info on this board and people willing to help out that almost anything can be accomplished. If you want to see what gauges like the ones from j & p look like on the bike, you can check out this (on my bike)

Hey, that Speedo looks nice. Where is it on J & P's site? The one I listed & found doesn't have highbeam, oil, neutral, or turn lights. Were they hard to get wired and cabled up?

Ok, cool. But it didn't turn out that the cable ratio for the speedo was all wrong and you had to get something to modify it, or that the water temperature sensor wasn't compatible with the existing sensor, etc (those are my main concerns)? Does the water gauge work well? It looks great, and I think I may end up doing what you did right there!

edit: I found the speedo and the tach, but could not find the water temp gauge. Could you point that out?

The speedo and tach drive are perfect matches (no adapters needed) and are very accurate. As to the temp gauge setup... That was a different matter. What I came up with was an autometer marine pro comp gauge (from egauges) and sender (from autozone) with a bushing to adapt the threads for the new sender to the thermostat housing... M16 x 1.5 to 1/8" npt (R7964). Since the 7v voltage regulator only drives the temperature gauge I used the wiring from it to supply the new gauge with power and lighting.

Wow. Seriously I'm starting to give up on the idea of having a temperature gauge. After my previous engine melted from overheating I'm more than a little wary of it happeneing again. But if it's so hard to get it set up maybe I'll just let the water temp measurement go.

It sounds like more trouble than it actually is. Seriously though, the temp gauge has four wires... and the sender just screws into the bushing which screws into the thermostat hosing. Look at it this way, you know it can be done and who to contact to help you through it.

After weeks of deliberations, I've finally decided to go your route. The Electrosport gauges just have too many problems with something like the CX500, and the gauges from OBB seem to have the best balance of everything someone needs.

Problem is, though, that I have to wait until next week before I can order them (money, you know...). But I am really looking forward to getting them.

Manofyunk, those pictures are great! I like the basic chrome look. Could you post pictures of the faces with the lights on (LED's on, etc)?

I will get a pic tonight when they are more easily seen and post the pic in the test forum. The tach and speedo have a white glow and the temp gauge has a red glow. I like it.

I may have missed the point here, but if the only problem is the needle bouncing around, can't you replace with a set of OEM from a breakers? (boneyard)?

On the Temp gauge front, I used a 12v fed car one, but it was 52mm dia, which may cause a problem with siting on the bike, but easy on the JZR

I cannot speak for others, but I switched out my gauges because I wanted something different. Also, I did not want to put a gauge on that was just as old as the one that failed, because to me it seems that the risk of failure would be high with the used gauge.

Yeah, you missed my post where I said the Speedo finally stopped working altogether (except the Odo).

Nice! It's funny that the gauge telling you how hot your coolant is, glows red!

The bulb in the temp gauge can be changed, but I like it the way it is. The red helps split up the other gauges (visually) and just looks darn good to me.

Since we are on the topic of gauges, will a cluster from a Custom fit onto a '78?   i.e. just "plug and play"?

I'm pretty sure that there is no difference between the years. They're all mechanical with the same cable ratios and wiring.

Well, I think that I may just fabricate an aluminum housing for my CX cluster.  Just something to hide the gauges and the wiring when you look at the front end of the bike.

So I got the new Speedo & Tach from OBB, and was removing the old cluster. But there are a few problems getting them on.

First, I can't take off the old mounting hardware because when loosening the two bolts they bump into the rubber tube running from the top of one fork to the other. How do you take off the old mounting hardware?

Second, the Speedo & Tach didn't come with any mounting hardware. What did you guys use?

Third, the wiring from the old cluster goes into a large plug, while the new wiring is just straight bare wires. How did you guys wire it up?

I have a 79 C so I do not have the rubber hose. What I think you can do is to mount the gauges to the stock mount (some modding needed).

the Speedo & Tach didn't come with any mounting hardware. What did you guys use?

The gauges that I received had a triangular piece of metal attached to the mounting nuts.

the wiring from the old cluster goes into a large plug, while the new wiring is just straight bare wires. How did you guys wire it up?

I soldered mine together, but would recommend going to Radio shack and getting molex connectors if you do not feel comfortable with the heat.
