My Dad and I rescued this GL650I from a pasture 15 years ago. Ran, but had a GL500 front grafted on at some point. Cosmetically, missing most of the plastic. This pic was after dragging it home and cleaning it up quite a bit:

Don't be fooled, lots of ArmorAll, soap, water, degreaser and elbow grease to get it here. Have pulled off the rooted seat and busted trunk for this shot.
Rode for the last 15 years, then sold to make room in the garage (always was a little cramped in terms of riding position too.) Over the years my father built a custom trunk extender, I sourced an entire Type I gauge package, radio/intercom and wired for an iPod. (Not to mention lots of aluminum polishing.)

Didn't expect to find this a few months later: Only 300 miles on it so far. Still breaking it in! Canadian winter has put a hold on that for awhile.

A little update on my ride

Still a little way to go but it should be rideable again in a week or so and then tank and seat get the paint and it's done..... again.

lucky,
I probably missed this point somewhere along the way.
I thought you had a CX650C? These pics are of a CX500C.

Looking good Lucky, glad you are digging that seat! Finally got that broken bolt out today, had to break down and get a screw extractor kit to do it, the dremel wasn't cutting it. Got to take it out for a run, and I dig my new seat too.

Heat wrapped the headers last week. Just the seat bump to do now.
Helmet and goggles arrived today. I know it is not as safe as a full face, but damn what fun to ride in. Had to put a set of earplugs in though, very noisy.
Went for a quick ride.
Man, people sure check you out when you look like this. ;D

Got the bike out today and started it. Can't wait for the weather to get a little warmer and stay there.
Anyways, here is what the bike looks like now after some new paint.

Still got some finishing touches to do on the side covers and ammo cans before i put those back on. Plus I have new mirrors on the way. I think the next project is gonna be forward controls.

The Buzzard is damn close!
Some final paint, and I'll work on some badges for the tank. I found a great German Gothic script typeface to carve out of aluminum... More shit I've never done before.

Shinko 705s are due in tomorrow.

God damn that's impressive! How much did you raise the bike in the rear? 13" to 15"? That is a rowdy little bike. Why the custom foot controls? I would figure on an enduro style bike you'd want your feet back a little and higher. -nick

The shocks are from a TT500, and are 14 1/4" I've seen them on other CX's, and I have a spare drivetrain if I kludge up the universal joint with the high angle. I figure that the bike sags enough, and that it's inside of what Honda designed, so the only fear is from crossing a crowned road and getting some air then. That's pretty damn unlikely for me. They match the bike size and weight wise, ande look a lot better than the skinny Harley shocks. Full compression gives about 6" of travel, and won't bottom out on the fender.
The shocks needed to have the sleeves taken out on 3 ends, it was a simple thing to slice in with an X-acto blade and then press it out with a bolt and a socket. Some rubber bushing on the sides, a few .250 spacers, and it's ready to go. Not bad for a $40 ebay snag.
The Shinkos arrived today, they are a steal at $102 delivered from TireWarehouse, and they are sitting at the shop, waiting to be put on tomorrow. I had both KLR 250 and KLR650 bikes, and I know better than to put offroad tires on these- I'll end up killing myself on a hill sometime. This bike is for going to work and gravel road camping, that's about it. I do like the truck bed coating on the gas tank. It hides a lot of sins.

I didn't even know the footpegs were a Custom part. I have some deluxe ones, but the shifter needs to be fixed. I'll work on a new one later this summer and move the pegs back.
The exhaust is ugly cool. If I can avoid getting a sound ticket, I'll be amazed.

Got them off ebay, I had to wait until they came up for bidding instead of buy it now as they aren't the cheapest, they are very nice though and I ended up getting them at a decent price.
And to add to the thread, a pic from the weekend, rode 700km that day (took 10 hours as lots of twists, fog and rain), 5 hours to a CX rally, 3 hours at the rally and 5 hours home

Cheers Steve

What spin-on filter are you using?
I presume it did not require a mod?

1981 CX500 RAT

No major mods on it, usual matt black paint, duct-tape seat, cut down fairing, etc.
In the end will have scaffold-pole exhausts & ammo-crate storage boxes. Would hard-tail but need to put my missus on the back! lol

Well, the pipes are unlike anything I've seen.
One question, does the bike get caught out in the rain much when the engine isn't running?
