CDI *CLOSED* Ignitech Group buy.

h'Audi:

I handled the first CX Group Buy for these.  That one worked out OK, with everyone saving about $100 a unit (depending on the exchange rate.)  Here is a link in case you haven't heard of this yet:

http://choppercharles.com/cs/forums/142943/ShowPost.aspx

If you want, you can show your intentions here or send me a PM and Email through the list (I"m bound to get one of them, I sometimes go for a week without time to check this list.)

Keep in mind.

1. I'm just doing this to help get the price down, I don't represent them, design them etc.  Any warranty or installation issues, you use the factory warranty and go directly through the Czech's.
2. Don't be in a rush, the Czechs placed the  first order very quickly, but US customs took 3 weeks to release them.
3. Any doubts as to whether it fits, installation etc., ask on this list or check the numerous previous posts.
4. I can add users outside the US to the order,  you'll probably pay a few bucks more for shipping, but might save that on the group discount or taxes saved, do the math.
5. It looks like we'll be into the winter CX doldrums, if there's no rush, the more units people can commit to, the better the price.
6. Depending on interest or lack thereof, we'll have a definitive cutoff date for this.
7. If someone comes up with a better/cheaper alternative in the meantime, sign me up too.
8. The price is VERY dependent on exchange rates (Euro-Dollar).  So far the exchange has been pretty steady, but something to keep in mind.

Use U$180.00 as a unit price (5 or fewer units) to make your decision whether it's worth it to you to get in on this, the more units ordered, the cheaper they get.

Looks like about 4 units so far.

I know some of you may ride all year long, if you're going to absolutely need it by a certain date, let me know.

Otherwise, if no one is in a rush a couple months if people keep manifesting their interest. If we go a week or two with no new comers, then I'll get a price on the units committed to, collect the money and place the order.

Chime in with any suggestions or comments, I don't have a pony in this race, just the ref.

I have GL's so not for me, at this time.

But I would suggest, if no one is in a hurry, let this thread be bummed and commented in until at least mid Nov before you start talking about closing the order. That would give people time to see, think, and maybe have a failure. (sure hope not.)

I want one of these new CDI's too for my Honda 1978 CX500.  I personally am not in any hurry and prefer that more people get in on this group buy to give a better price.  (EDIT:  I may even buy two of these especially if installing this CDI eliminates the stator)

Is this CDI a direct replacement for what is stock in my motorcycle?  What I mean I guess is do I have to be an electrical genius or do I have to program it to make it work??  Did I read somewhere that this CDI unit does not depend on the stator for it's voltage???  Others must have installed these, since you had a group buy previously, so how are they working out?

Sorry for asking so many questions.  I think I read everything I could find regarding this subject but maybe didn't find it all.

Thanks to anyone who can answer my questions

Also I did find a link to the install of this CDI and the startup of the motorcycle.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XEEiB65FznM  )

I'd like to hear from some of the "First" CDI purchasers. How did it go? Was it pretty much 'plug-n-play' and away you go? Did anybody get some pics to document the conversion?

I don't know about it being exactly plug and play but pretty close. The only part that isn't plug n play is the power source or red wire that has to be tapped into an ignition supplied power source. The nice part is that black wire is just under where the coil wires connect. I tested it first before I tapped into any wires so I hooked up a test light to the wire and watched the light go on and off as I turned the key on and off.

It's a pretty good deal seeing as used 30 year old cdi's are going for $100 and for $60 more you can go with something programmable with a warranty.
I haven't used my bike as much as I want since installing it but I feel confidant in my purchase. I only wish I had bought it in the spring so I could test it more thoroughly and then I wouldn't have had an old cdi die on me and leave me stranded.

Also and addition of new coils for $14 on ebay made it seem even more reliable.

OK, I'm going to tally up what we've got so far and put in a request for a Pro-Forma invoice, to get an exact price for the units.  As it stands now, there will be the volume discount (quantity will be added to the previous group buy's price break.)  These will be a bit more because your dividing up the fixed shipping and export taxes by a smaller group of buyers.

So, click on "PM" at the bottom of this post, and put your User Name in the subject box, so I know who you are.

Let me know how many units you want and are willing to commit to.
That's it.

I'll tally up the exact number of units, get a price and post it here.  AFTER I get a final price, I'll post your cost per unit here.

Then we'll proceed from there, so make your intentions known, I'd like to get this one done by the end of November.

Cobram,

I may want in on this one, but I can't commit until I've weighed all my options and verified the charging output of my current stator.  I'll try to do that over the weekend.

Thanks,

I had written Ignitech before I signed up for this group purchase; I just received this from them.

They included a picture of my current CDI to verify this is what I had and they said I needed the model below.

They included all kinds of stuff in their price list but it was hard enough reconstructing this simple table without a table; hope the formatting stays when I post this or else it'll be one big mess. So this I guess is just  just a ball park figure so we can get an idea what we''ll pay and then plus sending it out to us from 2nd point of origin since they prolly won't be drop shipping this to each of us.

I would ask about the VAT. Generally it wouldn't apply to items shipped outside the country (if it works the same as Britain's VAT and Canada's GST). Could save you the 19%

i was thinking the same thing. whenever i've purchased from the UK they exclude the VAT.

and accoring to this EU site VAT is exempt for exports.

http://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/taxation/vat/how_vat_works/index_en.htm

"For the purpose of exports between the Community and non-member countries, no VAT is charged on the transaction "

Makes me wonder. anyone else have any info on this ?

Well that's even better. I revised the fee schedule they sent me BELOW. Now this is only a teaser for us to look at in the meantime while the organizer of this group buy does his thing.

I do not mean to MUCK up the works but I am sure everyone wants to know what to expect and can't wait!!!!!

Looks like if we spend so many EUR we really get a price break.

I am giddy with the prospect do doing something PROACTIVE about the same performance issues for my bike I have had off and on for years. It is the same ole crap and the light at the end of the tunnel pointing to a tired stator and CDI makes me do cart wheels-if i could!!!!

To me it is like a long awaited cure for some disease on my bike and she is going to get well!

thanks to this forum and to everyone here who helps each of us all the time when we need it.....this is great!!!!

My 1981 CX500C has been cutting power on the highway intermittently, after about 20 minutes of riding.  I will diagnosis it tomorrow, but it sounds like the stator is on its way out.
Can I still get in on the group buy ?

Vdot-if you go back and read some of my posts in the original group buy, all the pricing is there, and translated into simple English.  In a nutshell, if you want to buy a single unit yourself directly it'll be close to $250 each.

I will close the group buy the first week of November.   I will submit whatever number of units have been committed to by Monday, Nov. 2nd to Ignitech, whatever their Pro-Forma price +U$11 for internal shipping will be the final price.  $11 is actual cost for priority mail small box with $250 insurance.  If it gets lost or stolen in the mail, this will cover the cost of ordering an individual replacement unit directly yourself.

Canadians: (there were 2 in the first buy), you have a choice for shipping.  Priority mail is the same price to Canada BUT, big BUT, there is NO insurance or tracking available to Canada for Priority Mail at this price rate.  If you want insurance and tracking, you have to kick up the Postal delivery service, and it will cost about $45 to ship with insurance/tracking.  FWIW, both CDI's to Canada were shipped via regular un-tracked, uninsured Priority mail and arrived fine, it's at your risk though, something to keep in mind.

Right up to the time I close the buy,  new buyers can join in or anyone who changes their mind can opt out.

Cobram I appreciate what you are doing!!!! I know how expensive it would be without a bulk purchase! Thank you very much !
I talked to Jan Matous, Ignitech s.r.o. over there, his English is not so good! I have his mobile phone if you wish to talk to him. Today is some Czech national holiday! To avoid redundancy, can you please post the link of the First buy you refer to for the rest of us to enjoy!

Thank you for organizing this. This is a mercy mission for some of us and if there is anything i can do to help you please let me know......I have a new google voice phone number  so i can call most places inexpensively!

WOW. I read EVERY post from those 2 links you guys supplied.

I can hardly wait. This would explain EVERYTHING that has been wrong with my bike for years.

I have a question  and please feel free to move this to another place if you need to.

So the high and low windings on our tired stators are dying. The OEM CDI  is 30 years old.

How do I know if the remaining capacity of my stator will be sufficiently Optimum to power the battery and thus run the ignitech?

Can I tell by the reading on the STATOR TEST from another post whether my STATOR is well enough to power my bike and charging system with the Ignitech?

WHAT THINK YOU?

After reading the last CDI purchase thread, was there a best way to pay for the part, Snail Mail or through the interwebs?

Did anybody run into problems if paying online?

I think some may have used snail mail. I used paypal and it went fine like always. Paypal offers more protection but it's not like Cobram is going to take the money and run. If snail mail pay by check but most know cash can disappear.

Also , in reading the links from the previous buy I think someone noted that paying person to person in pay pal is free.

It's paying as a gift is free. Person to person is some odd percent.

Completed the stator check.  Everything passes, except the white to green wire test, at 292 ohms, specs are 387-473.  Yup, I need to get in on the group buy.

Hello all

I have been in contact with Ignitech and I asked them to address the issue of how the big connector connects to the OLD connector on the bike.

I want this thing to "SNAP" securely, even though you have not had any issues yet, but I'd hate for shit to happen while passing a vehicle or on a busy bridge or something....OOOOPS i'm dead.

So, when we place this order will you please mention you would like to order the corresponding connectors so we can retro fit the destination for a PERFECT fit.

Here is his communication to me:

Hello

Our connector fit to original connector. We will send you also counter part connector.

 Regards

 Jan Matous

Thanks!  vdotmatrix

I'd like to get in on the group buy if it is still possible.  My bike is in storage, and I'm living about 17 000km away.  But when I get back to it next summer I'm pretty sure its gonna need one of these.

We're getting close to the close of this group buy.

Has everyone who wants in read this entire thread, and the thread from the previous buy that Cobram linked in his first post?  Has everyone sent Cobram a PM with "your User Name in the subject box, so (he) know(s) who you are", and the number of units you are committing to buy?  I don't want to see anyone miss out because he didn't follow instructions.

Thanks, Cobram!

CHECK YOUR PM's if you want in.

If you DO NOT have a PM from me, you ARE NOT on the buy list.  If you do have a PM, and no longer wish to participate, please PM or Email me with your intentions.

Am awaiting a Pro-Forma from Ignitech, as soon as I have that I will post final price here and PM everyone with further instructions.

I asked about the connector too, but it's a huge PITA to replace those pins and get them out of the old connector, and the connector on the bike attaches very firmly.  A one cent zip tie would be just as secure and much easier if you want to make the existing connection 1000% secure.

Drumroll please.

I have the final price, can't replicate the price for the last buy because of shipping, shipping has gone up about 20% over the last order, but the good news is we've got 10 units committed to, so it will only add about $2 a unit.

Final Total price, delivered Priority Mail w/$250 insurance to each person's doorstep (in the USA) is U$163.00.

The Group Buy will close on MONDAY, NOVEMBER 9th.

If you've wandered in here and are reading this a day or two after the closing date, the company ships on Fridays, so they MAY be able to accommodate a straggler after that, but don't count on it.  There is also the possibility that someone will change their mind after the order is placed, so it doesn't hurt to ask, even if the buy is closed (happened on the first group buy.)

I'll be PM'ing and emailing those that have already confirmed with payment instructions in the next day or so.
