I think it would be easier just to go and buy a new one. Will give you better piece of mind as if it comes apart you'll probably be up for a new radiator core as well.
$45.00 sounds ok, these fans are $80.00 from the Honda dealer here !

Can you post a pic?  And you didn't have to shorten the camshaft?  Sounds like a sweet deal to me.

There are some super thin fans out there that can be used without cam shortening. I've thought about the same myself but the old standby is working pretty good.

Someone also mentioned using a fan to what I thought was a mazda but I could be wrong.

Cool.I look forward to seeing the Ninja fan.You can get those cheap USB SD readers now,

USB SD reader

Some even combined with a flash memory stick.

I have an 8gig USB flash stick that I keep a back up of my full working Operating system on.I can re-load in less than 10 mins,

The bikes definitely benefit from this conversion.I will never go back to a Mechanical fan.
With just serviced carbs,Electric fan and Iridium plugs my CX really roars and has loads of,"Kick" and still gives a good fuel return :)

Shep and Gregoryjewell, thanks for the "cool" idea I just bought a 1993 Ninja ZX600 radiator fan for $9.99 + $7.92 for shipping. According to the listing all ZX600 fans are the same from years '90 to '96 so I should be okay.

well went to walmart and got a usb sd card reader still need to pull radiator back off to get pics (rainy day no garage) but i will get them as soon as possible

gary50 the only hard part to this upgrade is positioning the fan just right i put mine in the top left corner of the radiator it does need to be wired into a switch of some sort even a toggle switch would work i rode it into town last night and the bike took a little longer to warm up and it was about 75 deg out good luck you wont regret it

With the Electro mechanical temp sensor switch fitted my CX warms up much faster than with the mechanical fan as one would expect. It's been around 3 months now and we have just had a week of very warm weather over here in the UK and the system has worked flawlessly. With freshly serviced carbs my CX has a helluva kick on the throttle now :)

I'm just copying and pasting this from another thread about fans...is a very valid question LOL :

Myself, and mabye I'm missing something here, but I don't see the benefit of a thermostat controlled fan over one that just spins all the time ???? Seems like a hassle for nothing ? Now if the shaft is messed up and you CAN'T put another stock blade on then ok, but if not why bother with electric ?

Just wondering...thanks !

1:Mechanical fans are inefficient using energy all the time even when not needed hence why they were discontinued not long after these engines were designed.
2:My modifications and the above do not affect the re-fitting of a standard fan if required.
3:There is virtually no chance of an Electric fan exploding and taking out the Radiator that has happened more than once on these engines and has been posted on here because of worn Mechanical fans.
4:As parts become scarcer a modern alternative is a great option.

I think someone previously mentioned that in cool weather,  the electric fanned engine would come up to operating temp sooner.  At the other end of the spectrum,  the electric fan runs at optimal rpm all the time allowing more efficient cooling in hot stop and go traffic. Obviously the camshaft driven fan is engine rpm dependant.

I rode across Nevada 2 weeks ago in 100+ temps with a stock 1981 CX fan and at times I had to increase speed to lower the coolant temp. Never got too close to red, but it was warmer than I'd ever seen it. When I increased the RPM's the temp dropped back where it usually runs. So the mechanical fan's efficiency is definately related to engine RPM. I am going to put in an electric fan on this Fall.

Man, seeing pictures of the ninja fan and those three nylon rod/mounts, I'm going to keep an eye out for a cheap Ninja 600 fan. The fan, nylon rods and a toggle switch and it looks like you are just about there. I'm into it! This looks like something even my dumb ass can manage :). Not sure though, cam chain adjustment just about kicked my ass this morning :P. -nick

Got a Ninja fan on my bike today and used the tip from gregoryjewell to use the nylon rods. (found them at the local)  I put them on opposite of your photo.  I hope that won't matter.  I found that the fan just touched the cam shaft so I made a little bracket that allowed me to move the lower part of the radiator forward.  That left some space between the two.  I also added a toggle switch until my temp sensor arrives.  That was my first wiring job and it took me most of the day!

Great work.Switches should be with you with luck probably after next week depending on the Mail. They have a small screw able bracket that we don;t use.Just metal bond that with the sensor to the position like on my link,

Even on the hottest day over here and stuck in traffic my fan has kept the engine around the nominal mark on the temp gauge so it's much more efficient than the Mechanical fan.

The ambient temps are dropping over here for Autumn/Fall so the fan will now rarely be used until next year

Pretty off topic - but since when I was looking up how to replace my fan on my cx500c, I can across this site. I wanted to share with the world that if you don't have a rotor puller to get the fan off (I spent like 6 hours pulling on the fan without success), a dangerous but successful way to get it off, is use a hammer to oppose the motion of the fan, and then tap the starter to give it some torque... breaks the frictional seal nicely.

Also - as mentioned above when discussing the benefits of an electric fan, the reason I needed to replace mine in the first place was because the fan basically "exploded" bending up the blades which damaged the radiator enough to need to replace that as well... Luckily I found a used radiator on ebay for 2.99 when it would normally cost $450 to order from honda or a powersports shop!

Someday I'm gonna have to look into this electric fan stuff - it sounds like a good idea!

Does anyone know the distance (in inches) from the old mechanical fan fitting on the camshaft to the back of the radiator. It would help to be able to find a fan that would fit without major modifications.  Thanks  BillRod

I too have a question. Regarding the temp sensor switch. I am not running any gauges, so my temp gauge sending unit is just sitting there. Is there a fan temp switch that will fit in that same threaded hole? And should a fan relay be used?

I too have a question. Regarding the temp sensor switch. I am not running any gauges, so my temp gauge sending unit is just sitting there. Is there a fan temp switch that will fit in that same threaded hole? And should a fan relay be used?

I tried to find a car one and this was the closest I could find but untested.

OK, my question is I understand the benefits of an electric fan but I don't see how it can make the bikes "peppier" — performance-wise....

Quicker to warm up? Yes. More reliable? Yes. But peppier? Duhh.....?

Mechanical fans have to get there energy from somewhere. The somewhere is the engine.Removing the Mechanical fan from the equation allows the engine to use less energy. No modern or automotive vehicles that I know of have used mechanical fans since the early 1980s because they are very inefficient.Even Honda on the 650s and I think Turbos which were on the cusp of this change used thermostatically controlled electric fans.

Thanks, Shep. I never thought twirlling that little hunk of plastic would tax the engine that much. I'm now intrigued with the possibilities....

I just had a thought. I've seen vehicles that use a temperature-sensitive clutch to engage the fan. Would that not work in this situation, only using the bike's power when needed?

I wouldn't complicate the issue. It took me two years on and off to make it as simple as possible. Not a complete two years but I had to put it on hold a couple of times whilst working some contracts etc.

Note:The power gains aren't massive but all the other factors already stated,

http://globalcxglvtwins.hostingdelivered.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=209&p=1528&hilit=electric+fan#p1528

make it a,"No Brainer" for me.If you felt the zippiness of my CX I think you would be impressed.
Mech Fan,balanced carbs and tuned Harley 883s exhausts and it pulls like train and accelerates superbly and with 20w fork oil and good tyres handles like a dream.
I've ridden my CX alongside many modern bikes/riders and never once felt I could be left behind on the,"Twisties" by most of them and in some cases have had to pass less able riders and send them to the back because they were endangering me.

No.Have a go at anything it may lead to other options.I was going to build this circuit if the temp sensors didn't work out,

http://www.heatsink.info/content.php?content=control.shtml

I even bought the components. It would allow the user to tune the Fan to come in at whatever temp the user wished and the could be placed almost anywhere on or around the engine then tuned to fir the fan in say just above the nominal mark.
