That depends on how good you are! ;)

  1. Drain the oil.
  2. Remove the shifter lever clamp bolt and (taking note of lever height) slide shifter lever off of shaft
  3. pry out old seal with screwdriver or hooked scribe, being careful not to scratch or damage the shaft or the engine housing.
  4. Cover shaft splines with tape to prevent damage to new seal.
  5. Oil new seal.
  6. Slide over shaft and press squarely into housing. My seal pressed in with only hand pressure, but you can use a deep well socket and give it a little tap if it's stubborn. Just make sure that it's going in straight!
  7. Reinstall lever and bolt. Pay close attention to the height of the lever when you put it back on, and follow your shop manual's torque spec for the pinch bolt. (You have a manual, right!?)
  8. While you've got the oil out, go ahead and replace the oil filter and drop in some new oil. You're done!

I was wondering the same thing, as the previous owner had some sort of tube-sock looking thing around the lever near the case to soak up the oil..  However, my shifter seems to have excessive play when I wiggle it up and down, or foreward and back..  It seems to work fine though..  I'm sorta scared about the depth of fixing that if it's something internal that needs replacing.

I just did this on mine - It wasn't hard at all. I did not follow all of these steps, but it is holding so far.

I do not have a manual either :(

I just tried to do this, but the new seal just refuses to go in.

I think the internal parts that accommadate the seal looked damaged.they look crinkly ?
so now I have a real problem
will have to strip the motor.

Iwill try and get photo.
thanks for your interest.

as you look down the hole where the old seal was, there is the channel that takes the seal - it looks all wavy
this is a "spindle gear shift"         if microfiche for cx650 is correct.

thanks

Dumb question.  Where's  the best place to find a replacement shifter oil seal?  I assume the honda dealership has them.  Not sure if they are a universal fit part or very specific.

You can use a generic oil seal, as long as it's 14 x 26 x 7.  The 7mm depth can vary a little.  The 14mm ID and 26mm OD can't.

Where are you at in NE? I'm in Lincoln. The dealer here only wanted 3.42, but shipping was $8. What a racket. Anyone used many generics or just think it would work?

Lincoln Cycle and ATV (3320 Cornhusker, 464-5551) will order them for $3.99 + tax.  I ordered one.  Todd and Sam are great, very fair, friendly and have a lot of concern for your bike.  Check 'em out.

Just curious, was it Rods or Star City that was yankin you?

I'm in east Lincoln, south of O, north of A, east of 84th.  where are you?
