CX650E (eurosport) and CX650T rear wheels interchangeable?
|
|
|

Sure would appreciate comment(s) on interchangeability of CX650E (eurosport) rear wheel and CX650Turbo rear wheels. I have a Eurosport and am considering the switch, for whatever reason. More rubber on the road, I guess. FWIW the turbo I believe has a 2.75 X 17 rear rim and Honda specifies a 120/90-17 tire for it but I gather everybody sizes up to a 130/90-17. And that gives almost exactly the same diameter as the 2.5 X 18 Eurosport rear wheel with the specified 120/90-18 tire! I see where somebody took a stock CX650E to the Bonneville Salt Flats with a 130/90-18 3-ply Cheng
Shin rear tire and set a record for the 750cc pushrod class, so I guess there must be some different gearing somewhere in the drivetrain for the Turbo to hit Mach top speed with a smaller diameter rear wheel+tire (stock) than the Eurosport (stock). Anway, before I spring for another wheel cn anybody confirm they are interchangeable without modification? Thanks!

I have a 130/80-18 Bridgestone BT-45 on my 650E. It spans fine, and there is no warping in the cross section of the carcass.
If you tried to size down one more to a 130/70-18, I believe that you would start to see the cross section warp.
However, to answer your question, a CX650T rim will fit on a CX650E, and vise-versa.

Thanks! That's perfect info.
There must be gearing differences for the T.
I think I'll stick with the 18" wheel.

I think there have been two guys who have interchanged E and T rear wheels, TurboDan was one, I think. Wasn't there a recent thread in which this was mentioned/confirmed? I believe the effect was to use the larger E wheel to increase top end on a T, speaking of 650s in all cases. Sorry, I couldn't find it.

You are correct.
The main issue is that the 650E wheel, while taller, is also skinnier. 2.5 versus 2.75. So, while the 130/80/18 does fit, it is not the ideal tire for the rim, especially under full load, full lean. I believe Dan said that there were also height clearance issues on the 650T.
The reverse would not be true- on a 650E height would not be an issue. Width might be if you were trying to shovel a 130/90. My 130/80 is pretty close to the right side of the swingarm.

Thanks again, guys.
FWIW here's a link to that Salt Flats CX650 episode. Rear tire expanded in diameter by one inch at top speed! http://www.gregwilliams.ca/?p=329

Incidentally, I recently installed a CX650T 2.75" x 17" rim on my Eurosport. It is running a 130x90x17 Avon RoadRider with no clearance issues.

The wheels do interchange. I built a custome 18" rear wheel for my 500T. With a 130-90-18 tire it would grow at speed and hit the front of the swingarm. I also had to grind some on the driveshaft side where a big bump sticks inward near the front. Also the 500T does not have the power to reach redline with that setup. The 650T does have the poweer but the tire grows at top speed to interfere and rub the front of the swingarm. You may be able to use a smaller size ratio tire a 80 or 70 series, but that diminishes the whole idea of putting in a larger diameter to increase top speed. In my humble opinion, the change is not worht it inless it is done because a certain tire size is no longer available and the wheel size is necessary to keep the bike on the road. I now have an 18 inch rear wheel on my 500T with an Avon front radial tire on it. Seems to perform awesomely so far. I can send pictures if needed. Radials don't grow in diameter the same extent that bias-ply do. 130/80-18 Avon Venom

Dan, I've always wanted to find someone who had tried a "front" on the back of a bike. I hope you were very careful to install the tyre in the reverse direction to the rotation arrow shown on the casing.
I have trouble getting a slim (4.60) 16" tyre for my Z250C rear, and have accumulated a few 16" fronts - now I'll try one.
