Dental Mirror View of Cam Chain

I know that this has been done by others, but I'm sure I've seen photos of the procedure somewhere but can't find them. Anybody remember, was it in this forum or one of the other CX information websites?
Cheers!

Someone used a small led light and with the mirror, might have been able to see how much of the slot in the the adjusment arm was used.

Hopefully someone will recall the details of that thread. I vaguely remember it, thinking at the time that it was a fine idea and that I should make one of those small mirror/12V bulb gadgets for my new-to-me GL to verify that the tensioner adjustment was actually working. Was the poster from Europe? The pics in that thread were good and the poster may have referred to an earlier thread on the same topic as I believe his was a refinement to the idea. But you know how memory is..

I know for sure there is a snake like video device that can be used. It is on the displays at Home Depot, and it is made by Milwaukee. it is a very small lighted device and bends and can be inserted into anything with a 3/4 inch opening. it goes for 250.00 bucks, but i hope santa brings me one for xmas! here is the link

OK, my curiosity has gotten the best of me. I have to assume it's the "timing inspection hole" that somehow gives you a peek if you have the right gadget. Am I on the right track here? Can't imagine any other way....gweric

ok, yes, it came from Europe and the pictures were still online, so here's a rerun : Equipment used is a simple 12V bulb and a cheap dental mirror. Now just hang the light inside the engine and take a look using the mirror and this is what you might see :

(yes, the view is upside down) it is a bit blurred because I needed one hand for the mirror and one for the camera. The trick is not so much seeing anything at all but interpreting what you see. Here you can see the tensioner and its position, I estimate the chain is about halfway worn or a bit more, but that is because I know it has been adjusted correctly and there is no slack. This engine did run without chain noises.. For a non-running engine you can see the position of the tensioner, not if it has been adjusted properly. But for a running engine without chain slap or rattle it should give a reasonable indication of just how much wear there is.

Nice unit, but I think I would rather buy this one from Harbor freight: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=95833
It is a bit smaller in diameter and should fit into almost any spark plug hole. so would be able to get much farther into the motor around the stator/rotor and stuff. plus with a built in screen and lights, you can really see real time. and even record it with the video out.
(it's on my list next time i get a "30%" of one item coupon in my email. that would make it only $210)
EDIT: wow, ridgid has a cheaper unit and an option for a 9.5mm head on it too.: http://www.toolup.com/ridgid/31123.aspx?AdCamp=CA&utm_source=CAbecome&utm_medium=CA&utm_term=ridgid+31123
you can even get a replacement head for it and extra tips without spending a bundle: http://www.toolup.com/ridgid/30223.aspx?AdCamp=CA&utm_source=CAbecome&utm_medium=CA&utm_term=ridgid+30223

I just tried the mirror method this afternoon. I think I got a pretty good view of it, but I just don't know exactly what I'm looking at. Here are some pics I took -

So are those pictures good enough for anyone to be able to tell how
much adjustment I have left? The bike is a GL500i with just shy of
50,000 miles.

Well, having admitted posting how to look at it, I guess I''m supposed to have an opinion on what you're looking at?
If the bike is running without suspicious noises and the adjustments have been done regularly, I'd say there is no reason to worry about chain wear. What I look for is just how much of the slot in the tensioner arm is showing, that's the slot the bolt passes through. For a new chain and new guides I's expect not to see much of the slot if any, for a very worn one I'd expect to see a gap about as long as the slot is wide.
In the pics there is just a bit visible, so I'd expect it to be good for many more miles/kilometers. Compare the picture I (re)posted, that one I'd guess to be halfway or a bit worse. All this is no use if a guide or something else is bad or broken, no way to see that.
Looks as if things are not very clean in there or is that just the light ??
luck, Frans

That's what I had guessed, I just wasn't 100% sure. The mirror I used was a bit scratched up which is why it looks dirty in the picture. Thanks for the insight.

If I'm reading this picture correctly I would say the cam chain is near the end of it's life and should be changed.

If the chain has given 50,000 miles of good service and for the relatively small cost of the parts required to do this service it would give the owner peace-of-mind on this issue for another 50,000 miles. Why risk internal damage for such a small cost.

I agree with Shep. It is time to replace the chain. I think that worn and loose chains cause the excess wear and breakage of the guides. Don't go more than 1000 miles without replacement.

Shep that chain has about 1/8 inch more to its life. but if I was at or near 50,000 miles and already had a reason to take the rear cover off I would do it anyway.
