How to find a short. For Quick Reference
Reply Quote
This is a post for the quick reference and I didn't want to take credit for everyone's brilliant ideas so here's your chance.

If a bike has a short and is blowing fuses how do I find and eliminate it. Explain in the best detail you can. Don't forget there is also a guy in the tech section experiencing this right now.

Info supplied by DaveF

Temporarily replace the fuse with a 12 volt bulb.  The bulb will light as long as the short is present but will limit the current to a safe value.

Then start unplugging things until the bulb is no longer lit.

This technique can be used to find most shorts.

The bulb will glow brighter as the current going through it increases.

It may be advisable to unplug all other bulbs that are constantly on, such as the headlight, tail light, running lights, etc.  Otherwise this method could give a false indication of a short.

My GL1200 has a short or a load somewhere that drags the battery down if the bike sits for more than a day or two.  For that one I will be testing to find it with the key out of the bike and will not need to unplug all bulbs, at least not initially.
