I planned a month long surf trip to the west coast..  After remembering their twisty roads probably aren't under 3 feet of snow I wrestled my CX into the minivan.
If anyone on the west coast has any suggestions for routes or would like to just go for a cruise I'd appreciate it!  Does it stop raining in coastal Oregon during winter?
I'm leaving for Portland tomorrow and from there I have no set plans.  Just spend time riding waves and roads.  THANKS.

Saltwatersurf, these bikes are HEAVY, how do you manage to get yours in and out of your minivan by yourself ?
It would be a scary time I bet, everytime you run it up and down the ramp. ?
Mine has nearly got away from me several times, and that was just wheeling it backwards out of my garage !!

You haven't seen me....I look like the Incredible Hulk....one bicep curl and I set that CX right in there.  And back on earth I have a 12ft long 2x10.  Yeah it still sucks to work it in and out.  I have to take off the front brake reservoir, mirrors and lower the handlebars.  I also squish the forks down with a tie strap while going in and out.  I may find some kind bystander to give me a hand while I'm out there but most likely I'll find a very secluded spot to load and unload so nobody can point, laugh and heckle me while I attempt this procedure.

I have put mine in my truck several times. Real pain but sometimes has to be done. I can see where a van would be possible. And I'm sure the aid of a ramp would make it a lot easier. I like to find a small burm that I can put the bike on and walk it right in.

Good luck on your trip and have fun. Take some pictures and update us if you can.

Sounds like what you really need is one of those compact trailers that you can take apart, I use to have one I bought new for $200 to haul my Snapon tool chest around.

Some pictures from the trip so far.  Amazing motorcycle roads here in the Olympic Peninsula of Washington state.  You can drive for an hour and never go a straight half mile!  And the scenery is brilliant.  Snow capped mountains, mossy rainforest, mountain lakes, the ocean.   I have seen mostly BMW GS's on the roads out here.  A couple crotch rockets and one Kawi KLR with a sidecar.

I loved riding around up there years ago. It looks like you found the Hoh Rain forest ... the only rain forest left in North America.

Please keep the photos coming.

Yeah, I can't believe it's so warm and there is a rainforest here.  It's beautiful.  I hope to see more of the area by motorcycle.

Be sure to go to the top of the mountain lodge and take in the vistas. IT is worth the ride to the top if it isn't closed because of snow.

If you have time to spare you might want to see what Gerbing Electric Clothing has on sale at their factory. They do get returns.

They are at: 1145 85th Ave SE, Tumwater, WA

If you like wine, on the east side of the Peninsula there is a winery who sold the best raspberry wine that I ever tasted.

I have pics, just need to get them on here.  A few guys out riding yesterday along the puget sound.  Now that's an area with some views, mountains, ships, curvy roads.
I took off my left rear turn signal for some more room in the van but I hit it with something and the wire broke off, now I'm trying to figure out how to fix it so I can take it on and off often.  I can't get the lens off becuase the screws are rusted.  But other than that, no problems with the ol lady.

Well this is what the guts look like in case you don't know. For rusted screws I like to use an impact driver with the right bit. The right hammer and a good screwdriver would also work.

Not that I would want to ride without rear turn signals but I wonder if those states require them.

I was born on the Oregon Coast. If you want a very windey-road, first plan upon a drive (or bike ride) on Oregon Highway 53. I don't know the exact mileage, but from Highway 26 (the Sunset Highway) 15 miles East of Seaside, Highway 53 breaks away south-west bound, and is a fun ride. I also have a hobby as a navigator & rally mechanic during road rally's in that area in the summertime. Highway 53 is a favorite roadway for the Rallymasters to direct us onto. Hey, they enjoy driving 53 too.

While in the Oregon Coast general area, visit some of the Lewis & Clark sites. But remember, the area is a rain forest. Lewis & Clark wintered in the Clatsop Indian territory, later named "Astoria" 1805-6. They made the mistake of waiting for summer to arrive. Boo-boo. Moderns are usually aware that Seattle to Portland = over 275 days of rain per year. Waiting for summer on the Oregon Coast is akin to Hitler misjudging the Russion winter during WW2, although certainly not as serious. But expect rain in any month. Plan for it. Oh, and Lewis & Clark left too late in the summer of 1806 to beat the snow in the Rockys. In their trek eastward, they encountered deep snow right where I live now. Missoula, Montana. They enjoyed the minus 20F temperatures so much they named the canyon 2 miles east of Missoula "Hellgate." Even now, the local joke is: "When hell freezes over, Missoula schools will open 2 hours late." I'm a fountain of meaningless trivia. Sorry. A character flaw.
