Slimey Crud Run 2010
Reply Quote
It's almost that time of year and if it isn't who cares because I'm going to pretend it is.

Who's up for the Slimey Crud Run Sunday, May 2nd, 2010. We will also be anonymously celebrating Larry's retirement. Larry won't be present and cake may not be available but polished carbs and other accessories will be there to represent him. At least the ones on my bike will be.

Some pictures from last year.

I'll be there.

I hope the carbs I sent to Larry weren't bad enough to make him want to retire?

He's retiring from Folsom Prison and I'm sure that's enough. He's also doing that private shop bike restoration, carbs and stuff for us, and working on the finishing bits of the Carb book. Almost all the pictures and writing are done. Just needs corrections, index and cover and it should be good to go.

I was there last spring, didn't make the October version.  Still haven't been to Pine Bluff during the event since we always talk too much and never have time to get further down than Leland.  I'm hoping to get both ends in one of these visits.

Yeah it's a trick to start at the beginning. Half the adventure is getting there. The other half is figuring out where the hell you are. Leland is a pretty nice no cell phone zone.

WOW, seeing May 2nd sure brings a smile to my face! And it's the day after my birthday!
Now I have 2 things to look forward to. Retirement after 28 years in prison  and the pictures of the celebration run!
I sure wish I could make some of these events. But at least I can help get some of you there by helping them run and shine.

Don, thanks for this post. It will be fun to watch the event from here in California.
I just finished proofing the book last night. I'll be sending you the cover pictures to choose from in a day or 2.
I have to build that set today like we talked about.

You guys have A GREAT DAY on the run. Tip one up for me too.

LMAO Dave, It may feel like a release after I get out of there!
Even though I'm going to go back once a week to take their retired annuitants money.

You guys make sure you get a group picture for me OK.

Don,

I think that no one goes back to Pine Bluff after Leland. Micro would probably like a more direct route home after Leland.

It is an awesome gathering. If the weather is at all decent you will see anything and everything at both locations. Don't miss it.

There is a tavern with food in Pine Bluff, but most people go for the brats and hot dogs being sold by the Lions club at Leland. Boy, talking about it is making me hungry ...

People come from as far as three states away ... and it is worth it too.

I got the two Peter Egan books for Christmas and in them he mentions the Slimey Crud Gang and their infamous ride. Sounds like a great event. Just checked the website for the start location - just over 7 hours by slab. Obviously I would prefer to travel a more scenic route if I was coming up from Missouri. What is the camping situation in that area - any good places nearby?

You know I'm not sure about camping in that area but there is a lot of noting so I would assume camping is possible.
You also might want to check and see if there is a cheap motel. I thought I saw a sign for a motel six the other day offering a $36 room. It can be warm or cold that time of the year. Last year was warm. The following week wasn't.

It's a very cool event. Huge variety of unordinary bikes.

I used to live 20 miles from Leland, and know all the best rural routes in that area. I rode Yamaha RD 2 stroker's to that event a few years back.

One of the best places to see if your in the area for both day trippin or camping is Devils Lake State park near Baraboo.

The hikeing trail up on the rim rock of the lake is stunning.

It's best to arrive early in Leland. Then just kick back for several hours and watch the crowd come and go.

Be sure to bring a good camera, and all kinds of clothes, as it can be anything from snow showers to bikini weather.

The variety of uncommon machines is real good. There are no good size towns near Leland.....so pack in what supplies other than food and drink you will need for the day.

Sometimes a good collection of sporty, and cafe style bikes. One time I brought my TZR, and another guy rode out from near milwaukee on a little Suzuki 125 Gamma !!

Dont know if I will be able to go this spring though ?

How far or how long do you expect to go.

A few of us will be leaving milwaukee sunday morning and coming back that night. It's about 300 miles round trip. But it all depends on time. Might be better to scoot over to madison and wake up refreshed with a short drive.

That's what I did last year, Don. I stayed the night in Madison at a way too costly motel, but, I was not tired and only maybe 10 miles to Pine Bluff? And got there plenty early. And waited, and wiated and then Joe found me over by the fence and then.....WHOOSH!!!!!!!  There were more frigging bikes of EVERY kind of make and model swarmed down on the place in like 15 minutes...Lol.....What a site!.....Just remembering it is getting me excited about going again.

COME ON MAY!!

Not absolutely locked in yet but hoping to head over on the TW200 this year.  I try and ride something different each time I go and it's really the Tdub's turn.  Agree with the posting about arriving early and Leland and witnessing the arrival and departure of the crowd.  If I'm on the little fat-tired Yamaha, I should be easy to pick out.  I'll watch for crossway's twins.  Doug

When I do it on my '62 C105 Honda 55 Trail bike, I'll be an Iron Man.  It really isn't so bad on the TW200.....after awhile you just sort of forget that you have a butt.

Actually I've done a few almost-500 mile days; you should know about these places  http://picasaweb.google.com/coopdway/2009_06_26#

And I didn't even get my fish that I made the trip for.  A few weeks later I went back up and had breakfast there when I was finishing the Trans Wisconsin Adventure Trail.

See you in Leland?

Wow, Coop........

You get around on that fat tire 200 !! Im VERY familiar with several of the areas pictured. I work in Stone Lake during the cranberry harvest.

Gotta ask, where was the cassette of the Dead found ? Im a retired Dead Head, and have not seen but a handful of the tribe in this area in the last few years. A thing of the past, especially around here.

You guy's are gonna guilt me into going, arent you ??!!

So Coop...

Where is the Delta Diner???

Looks like a good place to eat on a road trip.

The Delta Diner is in the metropolis of Delta, WI, once a larger place than it is now.  Barely a wide spot in the road, the only thing really happening there other than an intersection for local cabin owners is the diner itself.

Delta is 6-8 miles southeast of Iron River, which is on US 2, east of Superior, WI.   County Road "H" takes you there, unless you come up from the south on the fireroads like I did.

I've booked me a motel room at America's Best Value Inn-Madison for 39.00 (well, after all is said n done, 50.15).  The motel is on the east side of Madison by I-39-90/#12-18 (about 20 miles er so east of Pine Bluff).

Depending on the weather n work, I'll prolly leave Friday night er Saturday morning. (more bout that later).

Hard to believe it isn't that far away. Of course work keeps filling in my days and I have to keep an eye on things so they don't box me in.

Depends on how much money you want to spend and how much rain you expect to be riding in. I have two. One is a cheap Dri Ducks suit made by Frogg Toggs. And the other is a semi more expensive one I snagged off ebay for dirt cheap made by RedLedge. Both do a fine job. If money was unlimited and it was going to rain everyday I would probably get the Frogg Toggs Motorcycle combination.

If you're a fisherman this is a good time to get a really good suit for dual purpose.

I vote for the Frogg Toggs also ... but I recommend you get the suits that have the bib pants with them. That way you never have to worry about the jacket riding up and you ending up with a wet stomach. Here are the bib pants I am talking about, but I know you can get them in bright colors too.

The only worry with Toggs is that you have to be very careful around Velcro. The material likes to grab Velcro and pull itself apart. That said, even with Velcro on all of my clothing it took 4-5 years of heavy use to kill my first Toggs rain suit.

I am much happier with the bib pants though ... I don't have to pull the jacket down to keep my midriff dry if the suit fills with air ... which they will do if you are riding a naked bike.

Ok we are almost there. Now who's actually going weather permitting?

I also got word from Milwaukee Vintage Moto ..

The premiere of the Slimey Crud documentary movie is this Saturday in
Madison, for any of you who want to make a two-day event out of the
Crud ride.  They will also be showing the film here in Milwaukee on
June 3rd at the Times

Oh to be young footloose and fancy free, or old enough for my wife to not care where I am.  Stuck somewhere in the middle, and will be at a kids birthday party this weekend
