3rd Annual HTTA-MN Spring Ride
Reply Quote
The Honda Transverse Twins Association - Minnesota will hold its
               3nd Annual
Twin Cities Spring Ride

        Saturday, May 22, 2010

Muster at my house in Northeast Minneapolis at 9:00AM.

The 2010 route will take us down the Mississippi River to a lunch stop in Red Wing, then up the St. Croix River to Stillwater, and back to Minneapolis for the traditional Potluck Barbecue.  Distance is about 140 miles.  Total ride time is about 4 hours.

Family and friends are welcome on the ride and/or at the party.

I'll provide burgers, brats, and dogs.  If you have the capacity to carry something on your bike, please bring a potluck item to share.  (If not, don't let it keep you away.)  Fridge space will be available during the ride.

Please post here to RSVP.

Thanks,

R

Welcome, Doug.

I see you made a new login.  I just shot you an email recommending that, but it seems you beat me to it.  Just so I don't have you twice in my list, what was your old login?

EDIT:  Oops, I just noticed that your join date was in 2008.  My mistake.

Randall,
Sorry for the confusion.  As far as I know, nothing changed, I logged in with my old username and password.

It looks like I joined in July 2008, found a fix for my leaky waterpump seal, 'stole' the group's wisdom and never returned.  The bike is running great, the seal fix was the Australian "do it from the outside" fix and all is well.

As a proper introduction, I was away from riding for almost 20 years, started again in 2004 and am now enjoying it more than ever.  Put 17K+ miles on last season, mostly on weekends (most of those miles on my '04 Helix and '92 TW200).  The garage is full of mostly old Honda's, the '82 CX500 Custom I have was in my dad's collection and was part of a group I got from him when he quit riding.  In the last couple of months I picked up three early '60's Honda Trail 55's, the bike I started on back in '68.  I have no intention of restoring them; I'm a rider rather than a wrencher.  Making ~2.7 bikes out of the three little fellahs is all I'm after, mechanically sound.

Looking forward to the May ride.   Doug

Thanks.

The very nice collection of old British machines is a private one, down in Eagan, off of Lone Oak.  I was very careful to ask permission for taking the photos.  A couple of times a year he opens the door up at his warehouse location to share the bikes.  I was invited and very appreciative.  Interesting, many of them came from Canada since during those years, more of the old Brit bikes made it to our north than made it down here.

Can't make it, but you have inspired me with a thought: How can I go about forming a Nova Scotia or Atlantic Canada chapter of the HTTA?!? I would like to do that.

Dan,
While I can't offer any help re: starting an NS chapter, I will wish you well.  My favorite trip of all time was an entire summer I spent in the Maritimes, Newfoundland, PEI, etc. and then back in the states where I zigzagged across New England.  Very fond memories of Cape Breton as well and it wouldn't take much of an excuse for me to return.

Good luck with a new group.

Well first you would have to find a few other guys willing to meet up with you and go for a ride and then go from there. If I had a yard or garage down here I would be all over milwaukee.

Well, I think there are a few CX/GL owners around the Maritimes--one nearby who I sold my '78 CX to this past Fall, plus a guy in Halifax who is on what I call the Port Captain list (those willing to help travelers in the area). So that's a start. I don't have a garage at my Windsor home, but I have a summer/retirement place in Cape Breton which has a barn and will someday have an AWESOME place to hang to my hat. I'll be making that motorcycle-friendly, for sure. I even dream of having a campground that caters to bikes and backpackers...there's 260 acres there, right on Bras D'Or Lake. Go to www.maps.google and put in 9725 East Bay Highway, Irish Vale, Cape Breton--they've got STREET VIEW of my place now! The road is rough at the moment, but is scheduled for widening and repaving next year. My property crosses the highway and has around 1600' of waterfront. Check it out! I'll be retiring to this piece of heaven in about 6 years. Might make a great spot for a HTTA rendezvous!

Are you sure?  What if we find you a CX for sale?  There should be quite a few on Craigslist in the spring.

To start a new chapter, you'll need to download the New Chapter Application (NCA) from the Pointless Bureaucracy section of the forum.  The NCA will need to be signed by the 3 Requisite Officers, and by the 7 Auxiliary Officers, if you have them (it helps make approval more likely.)  Send the completed application and $150 (US) to PWG in Lowgap.  The New Chapters Approval Committee will review your NCA and get back to you in 8 to 12 weeks.  At that point...

OK, I made all that up.  The HTTA has no officers, no fees, no paperwork (though Phil would probably like it if you sent him money.)

Just find the CX and GL riders in your area, pick a date and host a ride.  (Be sure to include time for socializing.)  Then do it again.  If someone needs to replace a stator or cam chain, have a garage party and knock it out in a weekend.  Basically, find ways to get a little face time, so the other members aren't just anonymous posters on the internet.

The HTTA-MN started with Graywolf's garage party to replace his stator, followed by the first Spring Ride, and a southern Minnesota ride later in the summer.  I've made the Spring Ride an annual event to help keep it going.  I expect it will outgrow my yard in a couple years, and we'll have to hold the follow-on picnic in a local park.

Good luck,

R

YES! That's me. I only discovered this minutes ago myself and had to send word out to all of my family! TOTALLY COOL! But you're right, it IS a beautiful place. I love going up there and always HATE to leave. I am simply, completely at peace when I am there. I do plan to have a nice garage, and I'm serious about the camping. Maybe it won't be a formal campground, but there'll sure as heck be a welcome mat for any CX/GL owners that happen by.

Wow, you had me going there, but as I was reading it, I was thinking, "yeah, I could come up with 3 requisite officers, and, yup, 7 auxilliary officers might take awhile, but I'll get there...$150, okay, a little pricey, but as a gesture of one's long term commitment, yeah, okay...YOU HAD ME!

So, I think February 14, 2010 is a fine birthdate for the HTTA-Atlantic Canada Branch. I'll be Supreme-but-modest leader for now. We Maritimers are just a little bit non-conformist, so we'll probably let the odd '82-'83 Yamaha Vision owner slip into the fold, especially if he/she is an aircraft engineer with a large, heated barn and a full complement of tools and know-how! But of course they will only be allowed to be non-voting associate members...sort of like the ladies auxilliary of the local volunteer fire department! Stay tuned for news of our first ride. One thing I can say for sure: It will include a stop at The Spitfire Arms! http://www.spitfirearms.com/

drneo, here's a thought.  This will help you with your Ironman training.  Ride to the Blue Ridge Motorcycle campground in North Carolina, arrive May 14 or 15 for the spring HTTA rally, while we are riding Sat. & Sun I would be glad to pace you running over those hills!  Then you could jump back on your bike and make the 3rd Annual HTTA-MN spring ride the next weekend!  It sounds like the HTTA-MN Spring Ride is going to be great!

Gene & Randall,

FYI: Dr Neo has set a worlds record already for miles covered in a rowing machine in a 24 hour period. So ... I am guessing they it isn't an Iron Butt training, but an Iron Man training program for another record.

Randall, if I thought I could make it I would give it a shot.  However, in recent years I have had to face facts,  I am getting old(er)!  As much as my spirit is willing the old bones put up a protest and say "enough is enough"!  I am hoping I can do more than I did last summer.  After the Alaska trip I managed to injure my right shoulder and it made driving the hack a painful experience!  Maybe the inactiviity this winter plus the fact that I will be riding the 83 as well as the hack will allow me to have fun, not just endure pain!  Maybe I need to get Thom to work on my shoulder!

David, thanks for the link.  As I said in the previous post maybe I should let Thom work on my shoulder, not sure if he works on "old" bones or not.  He did say in his write-up that one of the ways he trained was to jump on his bike and ride thousands of miles, so my suggestion would be valid!  Besides I would be glad to function as a pace "bike" for him to run while the rest of the crew went on a ride!

I might be able to make this.  I live in Duluth and my bike is currently completely torn apart but am on progress to have it all redone and put back together by the end of March/early April.  I have shorty shocks on the rear and a solo spring seat that I am also currently repadding with memory foam and new leather.  So I'll have to make a long ride up the shore or somewhere and make sure my back and bike can handle a ride to the cities and a 140 mile ride around the cities.  But it sounds like a great time!

I am a fairly new CX owner.Bike is in the middle of a freshen up.I have a goal now to  Get er done!  in time for the ride.
One thing that I need to do is get one of those Czech CDI boxes.
I would not trust a used one on a trip to the cites from Superior WI.

Anybody know how to get one of those ?

CDI *SPRINGTIME* Ignitech Group buy

Welcome.  I hope you  can make it.

P.S.  I've added you to the list.  If your CX isn't ready, another bike will do.  You appear to have plenty of options.

If you hit up the group buy you will most likely shave $80 off the cost of the ignitech. They sell for about $245 depending on the value of the dollar and we have been getting them for around $165.  Well worth it and an easy install.

Hey Don,

Maybe we should start a new thread so new members that might not be following this one will know of the CDI order? Just a thought. Anyway, I'm in for one if we get enough orders (8+) to get the discount. I can have it go to my Mom's address in Delaware to avoid any further (Canada) customs issues.

I'll mark that date on my calendar! Randall, contact me and we can pre-ride some of the return stretch. Hwy 36 has a lot of stoplights and traffic.
I bought it to ride, not to show off my polishing skills.

Not a bad idea.  I should have the bike ready in the last part of March.

There are a few between Stillwater and Maplewood where the grade-level crossings haven't been upgraded, but fewer than on Hwy 96 that we came into town on last year.  Between Maplewood and Minneapolis, Hwy 36 is all freeway now.

R

EDIT:  OK, I had to go look.  On Google Maps, I count 5 between Stillwater and I-694, and 6 between I-694 and MN-61, after which there are only overpasses.

Unless we get on the interstates (not a suggestion), there is no way to Randall's house (or mine) in Mpls without hitting stop lights. It's a fact of life of living in a city. If he wanted to move out to the country before spring, we'd have a chance...

Now that's an option. What do you say Randall. At least we aren't going downtown.

My wife's mother has some land near Monticello.  Will the 4th Annual Spring Ride be followed by a house raising?

I'm up for it but maybe we should start small with a 6 car garage and sleeping quarters.

Barring sudden catastrophe, I'm in for the ride.  The only reason I missed last year was because I was graduating college the same day.  I should have skipped that...
