Does this mount to the H-box or do you remove the H-box?

They mount to the h-box. Most mufflers are the same diameter at the inlet. In this case I think it's 1 7/8ths.

they mount right to h box , you have to remove part of gasket and they bolt right up tight , if they have a cross over port , washer in and out and bolt in place , covering hole , turn this part down , fab bracket from harley bolt hole to cx frame and your off , if they are catalytic type , the mufflers run very hot , no effect on performance or mileage or engine temp,/ e-mail me and i'll send pics , what i tried to up load were too hidef / to much space for site , grfreeman1@yahoo.com

Glad to hear there is an "inexpensive" alternative for the CX & GL. When I pulled my muffler/h-box/headers off of Maggie, I noticed the left muffler has a large hole on the underneath side near the outlet. While they look ok, they'll need to be replaced. I have listened to some You Tube video's with the Dyna/883 mufflers and they also sound great! Watching the prices for these locally-might ask my buddy if he still has his stock mufflers laying around from his H-D after his pipe upgrade.

I lost the auction. I'm glad I did though, at the last minute I think I saw something that may have screwed me. The Sportster pipes I was bidding on have a inlet hole on the side of the pipe as well as the actual end that you would slide in the H box. I never saw this on the posting until a couple minutes left to bid. Is this what we need, or do we just need a traditional pipe with a hole in each end?

From what I've seen there's a few different mounting methods for harley cans. Mine had a small tab that bolted to the muffler with 2 bolts. I used that tab and bent it to fit my foot peg bracket and it worked well. Mine were Dyna's, but maybe there's more than one type. Can you take a picture of the tabs youre talking about? The only "problem" with mine is that the Dyna's are made to be on the same side, so my left side has the stupid warning message face up.

Kingston,
That would be great if you could post pics of your mounts. I have some Dyna mufflers for my CX, but have a clearance issue with the right hand side at the final drive.

The flat metal tab you see came with my mufflers, I just had to bend it a little and reverse it. It's only mounted through 1 bolt but its pretty solid. The first picture is on its side, I couldn't get it to rotate when I posted it. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the pic Kingston.
Mine are a little differnent -- they must be from a different model year. The mounting point on the Dayna mufflers I have is a little different, and it's about 4" further toward the rear.
When I get something figured out for a mount, I'll post a pic.
Again, thanks.

I am so glad I read this post. I went to my local Harley Dealer this morning and bought a pair of mufflers still in the box for $20.00 no kidding. Can't wait to put them on.

There is a large non-dealer HD shop operated by a retired airframe/powerplant & Aircraft Inspector that I ride by at least once per week. After learning about people in this group using HD mufflers & shocks on the CX500, will stop by the shop next week to see what used parts he has to sell.
Are there other HD parts forum members have used on their CX500 they would recommend?

I picked up a pair of take-off Dyna mufflers for $10.
Then I cut off the front 2" off of the old cx muffler,
the part that slides into the H box.
I then had that welded that to the front of the Dyna muffler
at a local exhaust shop for $10.
They slipped right in like they were stock.
These are a bit louder than stock.
But as my stock had holes in them its hard to say what stock sounds like.
Sound is deep and throaty as you would expect from a HD part and no backfiring on deceleration!
A cheap fix for rusted out mufflers and look sporty too!

Just finished mounting my Harley mufflers. It took about 25 min. They sound great. nice deep sound but won't wake the policeman any more. I replaced a set of weed burners (straight pipes).

Ok, so I finally got the late model Dyna mufflers mounted to the CX. Mounting these to a GL is easier than a CX because the rear suspension setup of the GL give a little more room than the CX.
I decided to rotate the muffler mounting points toward the top to give more clearance. See pics.
I used 1.25" steel stock, and heated it with a couple if propane torches until it was red hot, then twisted it to about 45 degrees. It took multiple times of heating, adjusting, fitting, reheating, readjusting, refitting... but finally got a nice fit on both sides.
These are stock mufflers from a Dyna Glide, and they are *much* quieter than the OEM Honda mufflers -- and my Honda mufflers were in excellent shape. These take the "rasp" off the exhaust note, and make it deep and subtle.
I still need to paint the mounts so they won't rust. I'll sandblast them, POR-15 for a base then finish with black paint. That should hold up well.
I don't know how to post multiple pics to a single post, so I'll add more pics in sequencial posts.

If he's going to be proud of his nuts why not get some bigger ones to alert the ladies when he drives by. Then you'll here them screaming. "Come back here with those big nuts".

You got a problem seeing my nuts? :-)
Do you mean rotate the muffler so the mount is toward the bottom?
Or do you mean put the nuts in the muffler mounts and the bolts on the outside?
If it's the latter, the bolts are carriage bolts that slide into the mount. The square part of the carriage bolt keeps it from spinning.

If I put the muffler mounts on the bottom, the only bracket solution I could come up with required welding.
By turning the muffler so the mounts are up, they come in very close alignment with the passenger footpeg attachment point.
Of course, I'm open to suggestions.
I took the bike out for a couple hours today... did I mention that the sound is oh so nice now?

I am ready to get a set of stock sportster mufflers but i am having trouble. In most of the ebay auctions that i am looking at it appears that the mufflers are two different lengths.
My question for those of you that have put harley mufflers on your CX or GL is, are you using two different length mufflers or are you sourcing equal length mufflers from two different harley sets.
Thanks, WillyK57

It depends on what model harley they are from. Some have equal length pipes, some unequal, some have cross-overs, some none. Keep looking, you'll find a set of 2 equal length.

Willy Go to your local harley dealer. I did this last week and had my pick of several sets of new mufflers. in my case they were $20.00 bucks a set.

Another Harley muffler success story.
I finally finished up enough of my other projects and made time to put the Harley mufflers on my 82 GL500.
They slipped right on after I removed the original gasket and they look so much better than those original trumpet pipes. I did fabricate a small bracket to fit between the passenger foot peg mounts and the two mounting points on the Harley pipes, and I needed to use some foil muffler tape to seal up a slight leek at the joint. The pipe swap was defiantly worth the effort. The motorcycle is only slightly louder, has a much richer sound, and the performance is better when I am riding two up.
so here it is: Day of Delivery

Your exhaust look really good! Bought the same style for my bike.
Nice job.

Looks good. Harley pipes are the bomb and sound excellent on these machines and even better with the baffle plug removed. What type and brand of muffler tape did you use cause I have a slight leak at the h-box connection.
