Where to tap power for accessories- how much power draw?

I want to add a power jack in the dashboard area for my old Widder electric gloves- Is it advisable to add accessories to the CX Turbo? Should I tap the battery directly and run a fused line, or should I tap the power elsewhere?

Power tap control by a relay directly off the battery fused near to the battery as possible would be my vote.

use the current from the parking lights for the relay, so your socket won't be able to drain your battery when the engine is off. I use 12 volt cigar lighter type sockets for boats that come with a tightly fitted lid.

There is a fused accessory wire under the seat that is hot with the ignition in the on, acc, and park positions. (at least it is there on my naturally aspirated GL, not certain about the turbos). Power the relay from that or the parking light circuit (with a fuse inline) etc. and put the relay under the seat as well, it will be protected from weather under there. Gerbings and Warm and Safe etc make battery harnesses that include a fuse holder and a connector that might be easier than making your own, for about the same cost as buying the components. I use a 5amp fuse for the relay control and a 10 or 15amp for the relay power. Here is a pic that may help: I don't use the connector shown in the schematic, it is too hard to connect/disconnect with gloves on. It is also backwards in the schematic, the hot should be female (shouldn't female be hot always:-) ). I use the Gerbings connectors now, much better I think, and not bad prices either. Most Motorcycle Shops have the Gerbing stuff. I also have used 1/4" mono Phono jacks and lamp cord with good results I just did heated gear (gloves, insoles, jacket, pants) and this works well. The relay is available at RS or auto parts stores, I got my switch from Radio Shack. My post about my heated gear project is here: http://choppercharles.com/cs/forums/159774/ShowPost.aspx Hope this helps

Softie,
can you tell me what colour that fused accessory wire is under the seat of your GL ?
I want to see if I have it on my CX500.
Thanks.

On my GL650 the wire is green and yellow (I think) and has an inline fuse (5 amp) You can see the white fuse holder at the top of this pic...

Be very careful with the Turbo and how much juice you try to draw. The electrical system is already working hard due to the requiments of the Fuel Injection and other accessories....

Softie,
Thanks for the photo and the description, I will check my bike when I get back in the garage tomorrow.
I always wondered where I would connect to if I were to put any electrical accessories on my CX.
Thank you.

I only use that accessory wire to run low current items, it only is a small wire and the fuse is a 5 amp glass fuse. I supply the trigger current to two relays, a power tap for a cell phone charger, and a voltmeter with it. Any large current draw items (ie heated gear, extra lights etc) I run off the Battery via relays, fused with an automotive 10-15 amp blade fuses. Just add up the total wattage of your loads, and don't exceed the output of your charging system, or your battery will discharge. My system puts out about 260 watts, and with everything turned on my load is a bit more than that, but I don't turn everything on at once. By checking my voltmeter I can see if my battery is charging or discharging, and I might have to turn off a piece of gear if standing at idle in traffic, or if running with High beam on etc.
