82 GL500 has to go....PARTING OUT
|
|
|
|
|
EDIT AGAIN: I will add new posts to this thread with various pictures of parts that are in fair or good shape that do not already have someone's interest. I will do what I can to clean grime and dirt for better shots, but I will not be putting too much time into these bits as I have my bike to worry about still before the season flies past me.
EDIT: I will update what parts have been sold on this post so no need for scrolling down. Time has become less of an issue so I can get pictures of responses out a at an improved rate. Please now I am not a dumper or dealer, I just happen to take the bike off of my cousin's friend's hands in the hopes to restore or use some parts, and wish to help other CX/GL fans out if possible.
Items Sold/In process: -Tank w/ lid -Luggage Rack -Headlight assembly -Front calliper -Coolant pipe brackets
All parts are up for grabs, except for the vacuum pet-cock, for now, as I might put it to use on my CX, if possible. The bike worked good mechanically (engine/carbs/ignition did not have any problems that I could detect other than slow to turn over, probably due to sitting for so long). The lights, however, were all out of wack except for the headlight and break light. I can only assume the wiring for the directionals were out of shape. All and any chrome finishing (ie the cylinder head covers) are tarnished as this bike was sitting in the New England weather for an X amount of years. I do not have the title for the frame, if I can get a hold of the previous owner I will see if I can still get it. It has some rusted areas but nothing too severe from what I saw as a whole, I have yet to investigate further.
All other details can be asked for and I can take all the photographs you require. I am very open to offers and I do not expect to make much, hopefully enough to make back what I paid, if that. Please keep initial requests to PMs, further negotiating can continue by email. I do use paypal, have not used any other means of payment online as of yet.
Thank you for your time and consideration and ride safe this season(s), ~Mike

I can supply pictures on request if need be but for now this is what I have to offer.

I forgot to mention that the front brake master cylinder assembly on the bar is non functional too. I do not know about the brake itself. Also, I am considering keeping the mufflers as mine are after-market and aren't a perfect fit.

Not bad. Mine looked about the same when I got her.
If you end up parting it out, I wouldn't mind a quote on the fuel tank. Mine's rotten just above the side cover mounts.

I would be interested in both controls on the handlebars. I actually just need the plastic housings on both and on the right side control on the inside there is a small piece of metal that has a little knob on it that keeps the control from moving on the handlebar. Also would be interested in the bracket on the bottom of the rear seat that locks it in place.

Anything concerning the seat is very questionable as the back seat part was hardly fastened to the bike, was mostly held on by bungee cord. I am not 100% on how functional the controls are as the blinkers were not functioning. I will get some pictures of these parts asap. The gas tank might be slightly rusted inside and the bit that fastens it to the frame is a bit rusted as well, although I am sure a a metal worker could fashion a mod for it.
Again I will get pictures to you guys asap, just pardon me if it takes a couple days.

I took some pictures and from what I can tell you from closer examining, the bracket for the back seat is in pretty bad shape, worse than the seat's leather itself oddly enough. As for the handle controls the left one has a small crack in the plastic and its all very faded, this bike was left out in the elements of lovely New England, about 3 miles away from the nearest beaches. Here are some pictures I took: sorry in advance as my gf has the good camera while I am stuck with my G1 phone.

I hate to break your heart paul but this one is pretty bad cosmetically and possibly structurally. Multiple rust sections in very visible places, some beginning rust inside the tank (which made me more surprised that the bike ran smoothly from point A to point B...). the entire bottom of the tank, including the two mounting brackets are probably in better shape than the rest of the bike, oddly enough. In the petcock picture that is not rust, its dirt and grime build up that has been there. Have a look see:

To those who e-mailed me, I would like to try and keep this all centralised via PM's if possible, emails (photo's on request) will be sent shortly (1647 EST). To timk, I do if you would like pictures please PM me what you are looking for in quality, as I said, this thing was in a backyard in lovely New England weather under a 10' spread canopy.
Also, Thank you Stitch for reposting of pictures, I know I keep forgetting to make the url's active.

Just as an update and indirect bump, I pulled the carbs air filter, oil (overflow?) tank off the frame. the air filter plastic is in good shape but the screen is very rusted, and the cylinder piece for the actual filter is no good. When I emptied the oil bottle...thing, it had clear fluid and a massive grey clump of goo....so I think the engine has water inside. This amazes me as the bike ran a lot better than my bike. In anycase, the outside of the carbs are VERY caked with grime and such, could definitely go for a massive cleaning, I hope to take it apart to inspect the insides, but as I said, the bike ran well when I brought it home. Also took off the master cylinder lid from the front brake, the suction diaphragm(?) is still in good condition, the metal lid itself would need thorough cleaning and repainted.
If everything goes smoothly I plan to drop the engine by next week. Wish me luck heheh.

Mike, just sent you a PM - If the headlight bucket / gauge assembly is similar to what you'd find on the CX500 Custom, I'll take that whole assembly off your hands. I want to convert my '78 Mini Nacelle setup to the CX500 Custom setup.
Also, my room-mate needs a dual piston caliper, if your '82 has it.

82 GL500 has to go....PARTING OUT
|
|
|
|

Well, The engine is down and off the frame! Did it all by myself...have yet to get the block on a table yet as it is a little too heavy for me on my own, and I do not want the gramps breaking his hip. The following are various shots of the block and frame: I remind those that are interested in the engine, that it might have bad gaskets and there is definitely a high level of tarnish on various sections. Some comes off with a light wire brushing, others, may require a little elbow grease. I stress again I do not know the fool quality of it all, but I do know it ran smoothly when I rode it, so I know it runs. Have a look seen...and if you are wondering, that is masking tape over the exhaust ports and intakes: http://img257.imageshack.us/img257/7558/20100317201328.jpg http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/1092/20100318172232.jpg http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/6533/20100318172247.jpg http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/134/20100318172307.jpg http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/9733/20100318175202.jpg
http://img510.imageshack.us/img510/7752/20100317183642.jpg http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/9533/20100317201353.jpg http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/3046/20100318175135.jpg
Also took some shots of the carburettors, the inside looks clean from what I saw without dismantling, LOTS of external grime. Have a look see: http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/2623/20100311181942.jpg http://img683.imageshack.us/img683/5476/20100311182013.jpg http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/9246/20100311183155.jpg
As always, I am open to any and all inquiries, if you do have interest I can take more shots and when ready for potential buying please make an offer, I am almost clueless to pricing this stuff.

It is a single disk (two drum caliper). If you would like some better shots of it please let me know or send me a pm with email so I can send a zip of images.

Do you still have the front forks and rear shock? If so, what condition are they in? I'm extremely interested.
- Oh, and the exhaust hangers?
Thank you,

I'm interested in the rear shock as well. I just saved a gl500 from

I still have the front forks and I can send some pictures of it. The rear shock is still under request by somebody, you are next in line if it falls through. Drop me an email and I can send you the same photos I did to the other. The rear shock was holding pressure but the rubber piece that covers the bottom portion is ripped.
Edit, I do have the exhaust hangers I believe. Also, the caliper is still pending with someone. I am sorry for down time over the weekend.

I do Blind, I have been sick the last few days and just got to the message. Sadly, There is a line buildup for various bits of the prolink, One person wants just the prolink frame, the other wants the mono shock, I think one person wants both. I am doing the polite thing and goings down the line in order of first come first serve.
On another note, I have some shots of the radiator out of its frame and off the bike (meant to post these sooner): http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/7249/20100318171932.jpg http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/8085/20100318171912.jpg http://img710.imageshack.us/img710/8610/20100318171900.jpg http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/1579/20100318171843.jpg
I haven't gotten to taking pictures of the cover/frame parts, let alone brush some parts down. Unfortunately I got hit with the wonderful common cold pretty hard two days ago, so I am not risking going out in the garage durring this rainy/cold weather at least for another day or so, I apologise if this becomes a setback to some. More pictures will be posted along the way!

...although I think you said the engine ran so you will keep it complete. Headpipes would not have to be virgin to be better than mine.

Just a heads up to anyone who is in process or interested in parts: I am a quarter mile from the flooding that has hit Rhode Island. Fortunately I am not severely affected but a lot has come to a stand still, including the post office in my neighbourhood. I will get parts out when things have cleared, however the waters haven't started to recede yet.
As for the starter and fly wheel: starter has some of the black vinyl(?) flaked off with only surface rust in some spots. As I stated the bike ran and the engine turned over with a few hits of the ignition button (since it was sitting). As for anything inside the engine, I have not started to dismantle any of the block as yet again, with the flood and other nonsense, have not had the spare time to do much, that is time consuming. things should calm down after Easter though.
