It depends on how much you want to spend. Right now I could care less about original and just get some harley Dyna mufflers for $30 total or someone had a link to reproductions mufflers from I think davidsilva spares.

You could go with the "beer can mod" like the one guy posted.

Unless you intend to enter your bike in concours judging events, Harley mufflers are probably the best bet. As Don said, they can be found really cheap (I think I paid $10 each for the last ones I bought at a local Harley shop). For some reason, a lot of people buy brand new Harleys and then pay the dealer to put aftermarket mufflers on before even trying it with the original ones. The dealers end up with piles of brand new mufflers that their regular clientele aren't interested in so we can get them really cheap and laugh at the guy who made it possible.
You might have to make up some brackets &c to attach them, but they work really well. They are really top quality items too. One set have been on my summer bike since '97.
The ones I had on the 500 lasted 6 winters on 2
bikes. This includes daily use on roads that have salt & grit
spread because of ice and several months each winter without a wash (if
you wash it ice will happen somewhere inconvenient). When one of them
finally puked out a baffle the chrome was pretty dull but there were no
holes and just a bit of surface rust.

If there's a Harley dealer or a place that deals in Harley aftermarket near you, drop in and ask about pull-off mufflers. I paid $10 each cash for the ones on my 650 (no tax, no shipping and I had them right away).

My problem involved finding original mufflers for the 500C. They're a bit shorter in length but I found some exact repros in England. Something like $234 to get them here but they are made out of a lot heavier steel than the originals and are chromed to the max like a Snap-On wrench.
They'll be on there as soon as I've got the water seal dealt with.
I do think I've got one more set of used ones I can sell but they're just for a plain 500 if I recall. A few dents and dings, some surface rust but otherwise solid. $20 plus shipping.
They'd probably clean up just fine for a driver but not a total restoration.

Figured i'd post here instead of starting a new thread, which can be annoying. But would these harley mufflers work with something like my 78 with 2>1 setup? Just kind of want to make sure they would fit, cause i could get one from a friend for $15, if it'll fit, i'm all over it haha
 It's not age, it's patina.

I forget what thread it's in, but somebody else just posted that same exact mod, they put a sportster end on a 2-1 pipe.

I can't find a measurement on them, but someone on ebay happened to leave their beercan in the picture, so i got an idea of size, and yeah, seems the sportster muffler would work, and it has a nice adjustable bracket on it and everything... and they're dirt freakin' cheap. rock on, thanks for the lead!

sportster muffler will work on the two in one. Get a 13/4 od/13/4id pipe adapter from Autozone. It will serve as a bushing and makes a tight fit. Then make a strap hanger for the muffler and you are in business. AGB-1 I used the muffler without the adjustable bracket.

I just put a pair of Harley 883 mufflers on my bike Sat. They look like brand new and I payed $20.00 for the pair. They fit on ok but I may need to come up with something to hang them better.
The hanger holes in the mufflers are back past the rear axle so I'm not sure yet how I'm going to brace them up, or if I'm even going to bother with it because they are pretty ridged like they are.
They are a bit bigger around than I thought they would be and they are also quite a bit longer. They look cool on there and the bike sounds so much better than before. In my case, the bike sounds
much quieter. When I removed my old ones it sounded like there was a loose rock inside both of them when ya tipped them up and down. Only issue I have is that these things are right UNDER the
passenger foot pegs and the wife's feet are getting HOT. (LOL)

Yeah, i think i'd have to get an adapter or select a different muffler. That 2>1 on my bike(in my signature picture)has a 2" outside diameter. Glad i didn't buy something before being stupid and not checking that.I'll have to mull it over, because i'm going to likly exhaust wrap it down to the muffler anyway. So an adapter wouldn't be noticeable. At the same time, i might not pull the exhaust off to do that until the fall because i'd much rather ride over the summer on an ugly bike, then work all summer makin' it purdy. That's what winter's for.
Still, i do need a muffler, after about 45 minutes on there, it's like sitting inside a Cessna with no headset on.
