cx500tc missing & popping
|

just got my cx500tc running after 20 years of sitting. its only got 1500 miles on it, i had to replaced the fuel pump and used one from a gl1200 fi model. i sent the tank out to get cleaned & coated and have an aux fuel bottle with a return line hooked up. it misses and pops under acceleration and sometimes at idle. what would some common problems be with one that sat this long with fuel in it?

First, I'd check for crapped up plugs, crapped up fuel filters, then crapped up injectors.

Do you have a manual? Without it, diagnosis is a pain in the ass.
There are injectors on the right and left side of the engine, and visible, but hard to describe without a reference point. When you turn the bike on these injectors will click. If they do not click, they are probably gummed up, or varnished in.

I suspected dirty injectors on my CX500T a few years ago. I poured some Seafoam into the tank and let her idle. The bike will smoke a bit, however, it does clean the tank, piping, and injectors. My bike did run better afterwards. You can get Seafoam at Napa Auto Parts, and maybe a few other places. Do not forget to install new plug wires. I never trust the resistance readings of the the wires. I simply install known good wires and plugs. You can try this with the coils as well, one at a time. Again, I never trust the primary or secondary resistance readings (even within spec's). A coil or wire can cause missing, popping or sputtering when reved up, even when the wire & coil checked out with spec. Give it a try. I do not think you have any serious problems. We can get it figured out..........

With the ignition switch on and the bike not running SLOWLY open the throttle and you'll hear a click from the injectors.
That test is for a bike that won't start. If the bike starts and runs the injectors are functioning and other than possibly being dirty there is nothing wrong with them. If one fails the ECU will set a fault code and tell you exactly which injector it is.
The original fuel pump should have had a fine mesh cone filter plus each injector has tiny screen filters.
How do you know the main canister filter is ok? Did you install a new one? If the tank was rusty it needs to be replaced....although if it was plugged so bad that you had popping at idle, the engine would fall flat as you put it under load while riding it.
Tap and wiggle the engine kill switch while the bike is idling. Those things get so flakey that vibrations from reving the engine will cause it to make and break.
Have you actually ridden the bike with the fuel bottle hooked up or just idled it?

i just assumed the canister filter is ok with 1500 miles the fuel flows good from the pump. i have not ridden the bike yet, just had it running on the stand. i have heard the click from the injectiors. it will cold start and idle once warmed up but when you turn the throttle it stumbles and acts like a miss. can you clean the injector screens?

I'm assuming you had rust in the tank if you sent it out to be cleaned and coated. If the tank was the least bit rusty I'd replace the main filter.
I think the injector screens are part of the injector but you should be able to see if they are dirty by pulling the injectors.
I'd still get the original tank back on and go over the basics before really tearing things apart.
How was the air filter? They love to turn to mush and get sucked into the intake.
Does the fuel system light turn on while running?

With no fault codes it'll most likely be a basic fuel or ignition system problem due to age and lack of use.
Just for the heck of it try a good dose of seafoam in the fuel bottle. Too much seafoam will make the engine run poorly or not at all. As long as you can keep it running for a good while and then switch over to fresh gas it may help clear things up. I usually consider stuff like that snake oil but I have to admit it works well.
I'd recommend adding a bit at each fill up for the next 1000 miles but I'm not sure what affect it may have on your new tank liner?

Pull the injectors, have them cleaned/flow checked, and re-install with new fuel filter (aftermarket) after cleaning both the strainer in the fuel pump and in the tank along with petcock/tank itself.
Just my .02 (I'm turbo challenged ya know)

take a read of my post called "83 cx650t sputtering/popping/bogging below 4000". You may get some valuable info from some of the people that replied to me. Also I have become quite familiar with the whole turbo electronic set up to maybe help you out if I can.

look into the engine speed sensors as that was my problem. I had abroken magnet under the mounting tang and it was a bloddy mess from a leaky waterpump seal.
Good luck!
