Super Angry [8o|] Re-build/cleaning of the money pit
Reply Quote
So I figured instead of just posting individual threads I would just do one single build thread.  I'll post the pictures tonight or tomorrow, but so far things are going well.  This week there will be an oil change, and fork seal/fluid change, already replaced the rear turn signals, removed the two (yes two) sissy bars from the previous owner.  Now looking to change the tail light, handle bars, put a light bar on the front, lowering the rear shocks, and maybe a paint job/aluminum polish, and something with the exhaust.  My question right now is.... after replacing the rear turn signals to some new (I believe LED) lights, they will turn on, just not blink.  Do I just need to buy the 3 dollar turn signal relay? or something else

I found on on GL650 that with a electronic flasher from Autozone (about $9)
and LED's front and rear, that I needed to leave my turn signal Indicator lights in the dash as incandescent.

Works fine that way.

If you want LED's in the dash too, you need to wire a 6 ohm resistor inline somewhere. according to the internet, anyway.
The next time I have my fairing off, I hope to add a resistor in line to the dash lights that has the same resistance as the original bulb.
We'll see.

with the incandescent bulbs in the front and back there is more current resistance than with LED... I put LED in the rear only and had the same problem, the circuit "recognizes" it as a burnt out bulb, a resistor in line with the bulb should provide the resistance needed to trip the relay... but the size of resistor will all depend on your LED bulb itself... how many, and how much resistance each bulb gives... more resistance will make for a faster flashing turn signal because it will trip the relay sooner, too much resistance and it wont flash, the same way you found that with too little resistance and it didn't flash, the other option is to do like you said and replace the relay with another one but make sure you get one that is compatible with LED bulbs

someone correct me if i'm wrong, it's been a while since i learned about DC current wiring and i may be a little rusty

All you need is an electronic flasher instead of a thermal flasher. A thermal flasher need the resistance from a bulb, but an electronic will switch on and off on its own accord.

Had to do the same when I got new signals. Still incandescents, but much smaller bulbs.

Yeah thats on the list of things to get.  I'm eventually looking to pick up a fatboy or a dyna seat to change it out.  plus it will help when I put on some 11" shocks instead of the 13s.  Plus its not completely put back on again, I had it off to fiddle with the electrical work.

Well it may not be tip top.  But it will be running. Although if luck holds out it will have a new tail light and a new seat.

So add to the list a new set of exhaust! Just got one off of eBay for .99 plus shipping. That first warm day can't get here soon enough.

Tail light came in.  Hopefully I'm able to put it on tonight and see if it works, there are only two wires, so I don' t know if it will work as a break light.

Do you have a link to where you got it? Actually you should be able to check the bulb to see if it is single or dual filament. If single you won't have a rear running light.

Well its on, and it is only single filament.  Can I just buy a new bulb to put in to change that?  I also got my new pipes today so I'm quite excited to put those on.

Here are the pics of the light.  I also got the front turnsignals mounted.  Although they are just temporary until I can afford to pick up a light bar.  Now if I can just find a way to hide all of those damned wires up front.

Well damn the pipes don't fit. They are to thick to fit past the brake/pegs/shifter. I either need a welder to add a few inches to the front of the pipes, or it's time to switch to straight pipes.

You don't have an H-box?

I think several people have used a 12 inch section of straight pipe to connect them up.

Stitch, if you look at like a picture up the pipes just curve down and connect to those cone pipes that it came with.

Sorry just reread that. I meant I need a little bit added to the front of the mufflers I just bought. Otherwise they are to thick to fit past the foot controls.

So here is a question for the group while I am inbetween buy and installing parts.  I need a way to hide/remove the large amounts of electrical wires on the front of the bike.  I would like a nice clean look on the front but don't know what to remove/keep.  Any help?

Well that little girlie headlight probably doesn't even hold anything. So my solution to you is either get a bigger headlight or get a box to put all the stuff in like the gl's have. Most likely you don't have any more wires than stock. I know a guy in chicago who stuffs all his wires into a canteen. Looks pretty interesting til you realize he doesn't have a headlight.

Picture. Show us. There should not be a wiring mess. Small headlight. Prior picture below the "Wisconsin 1008E" license plate shows something that does not belong on a Stock CX. Below the wiring connector? Sir.

Odd exhaust. No H-box. Is your bike loud? Unusual tail light, and front turn signal lights. Makes my 98% stock bike look ho-hum boring in comparison.

David in Wisconsin was telling me how I could use a fork bag to hide the HID wiring harness and ballast for my bike. But if you went that way you would probably have to put it above the headlight.

Sorry guys life caught up to me and havn't had time to check the forms lately.  Also things got put on hold with the bike, needed to do surveys and such for the land, and my gf would absolutely kill me if I picked up parts when I should be spending it on the new house.  Anyways, as for the wiring at the front I'm saving up to put a light bar on, and kind of be able to hide things behind it, since it will be less "dinky" lol, and I'll have more space to hid them behind.  I'm still trying to get a dyna seat for it, and as soon as I get around to it I need to sell some parts back on ebay so I can start "fixing" again.

Let the modding begin!  Just finally got a new seat, a fat bob tank, and some 11 1/2" rear shocks.  Now for some paint and an install day.  The main thing left is buying and putting on a headlight bar.  Although some new issues may be occurring.    Driving into work today she kept slipping back into neutral from 2nd.  sigh

I've recently decided that I'm going to go for an old vintage look.  By putting on some big almost indian style front and rear fenders, eventually a spoked front wheel, an old military jeep/truck headlight, re-leather in brown the seat, and paint everything an olive military color.  I'm also hoping I can talk my girlfriend the artist into painting a bomber girl on the sides of the tank.  I'm just now trying to decide what to do about the exhaust and the gauges.

Try some gauges off a Caterpillar/Truck/ Hot rod. 12 volts of course. Old style Smiths gauges or similar. My pick for the exhaust would be Gattling Gun pipes. Have fun.
