TWO May 1-2 and BRMC June 5-6
Reply Quote
Two spring/summer events are planned for the HTTA Southeast Chapter (finally, an official name!).

The first is a small get-together at TWO the weekend of [Edit: May 1-2].  Folks who have been there know what a great place this is.  The food at TWO is superb and reasonably priced.  Reservations are not needed for camping and there are always plenty of spaces.

The second event is the HTTA Southeast Chapter Summer Rally at the Blue Ridge Motorcycle Campground, or BRMC, June 5-6.  This is expected to be a larger event than the TWO get-together, so if you can only make one event this would be the one to choose.

The original plans were to have the BRMC rally on May 15-16, but for several reasons it has been rescheduled.  As Michael described it,
 the cheese wrote:
...It is only six miles off the BRP on Hwy 276, in Canton NC. They have camping, cabins, a bathhouse and a kitchen. Seems like they are pretty reasonable on all their prices. A river runs next to the campsites. Looks open and grassy. No reservations needed for camping.  No campfires either. They have one "central" campfire nightly. Wi-Fi. Access.

I have not been here. But I have been around it. It is SMACK dab in the middle of some of the best roads in the southeast. The very road its on, scared the crap out of me. It will be some of the best riding of the year. Haywood County( the camp) encompasses the Parkway, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Pisgah National Forest, and the famed Cold Mountain. Where else has so many freaking sweet places?  The weather should be pretty warm by then. The rain should be over as well. Thank god for that!

Maybe we can be an official event for a change. The HTTA banner will be in attendance.  Everybody chime in and confirm you are coming, how many nights will you be camping, and so on. There will be a ride planned for most of the day Saturday. We will leave late morn after breakfast. Eat lunch (suggestions?) and wrap up dinner at the campground. AS for Sunday, it will be unorganized. Lazy day. Maybe a short unplanned ride. If there are rocking chairs, I'm sure that's where we'll be most of the day. I am working on the route now. I am very tempted to make it a long one. How much is too much? ...

The dates are six weeks apart so they will not be on top of each other for those who plan to attend both.

Come join in the fun!

I am planning on both trips.  Probably both on the 83.  I will be using the hack for a trip later in June to a rally at Hannigan Motorsports in Murray, Ky and VMD at Mid-Ohio in July.  Wow, already I have 4 trips planned, not counting the Amish, busy summer.  Maybe it will make up for this damn long winter!!

Glenn, good to see you on the board again.  Yeah, I'll bet your palm trees are in bloom!  You probably have as much snow as Sidecar Bob.  What you probably intended to say was that your sailboat is still frozen to the dock!  BTW were you aware that I am now the proud owner of a "new" 83 GL650I with less than 2800 miles on it?  The ST continues to run as smooth as ever.  If you should happen to show up at either of the Southeast rallys, especially TWO I will save you a bed in the lodge.

Hi, Glenn.  Thanks for checking in.  Are you the Glenn who Phil is referring to?

Glenn also attended the TWO rally in 2005, where I met him.  He is a truly great guy.

DavidF, Glenn will not committ to anything, if he gets the urge around April 22nd or 23rd he will jump on his black ST and probably not stop until he reaches TWO.  BTW David, you need to check the Spring Ride thread and look at the video of the trip route.  I heard a lot about a ride you lead at TWO and this one looks similar!

I'm sure Michael and Jerry will agree that video resembles the ride we took near TWO.

I rode it a couple of months prior to then and there were no problems - a nice, easy scenic ride.  Then the torrential monsoons hit and washed huge ruts and gullies into the road.  It sure caught me off guard - it was quite a relief to hit the pavement again!

I woke up from a dream about fishing in a trout stream, opened the tent flap and saw that the creek had risen to the tent!  Steve's GL had fallen over in the soft ground and my CX was leaning precariously.  It was a heavy, driving rain on the ride home.  What a trip!  Can't wait for the next chapter.

Alright guys. Here's the latest update. I have called the campground. We will be an organized event. She was a very nice lady. She is now expecting us to call and reserve cabins. Says there will be plenty of campsites-cabins for us. There will also be another organization that weekend. VJMC. Or something close to that.

I would like to see some more names on this list. I know some of the northeast members have nothing better to do. Come on down. It will be a blast. Lets represent the best idea Honda has had yet.

It is looking more and more like I won't be making it to TWO later this month. My new job is very demanding and I have a lot of learning to do in order to be successful at it. I will also most likely be exhausted  from my job, and inserting a couple of 14 hour days on the bike bracketing a wild weekend into the mix could just finish me off. Although I would really like to be able to make it.

The chances of making it to the BRMC affair are much better. By June I will have either learned how to do my job or I will have been fired from it (or quit in disgust). Still a lot of riding to do in a few days but worth it IMHO.

I have a cabin reserved at the Blue Ridge and will be sharing it with JerryB of the South Carolina chapter.  I will be there.  TWO later this month is now in question for me.  Last week I had surgery to finally solve a long term skin cancer problem.  The surgery has knocked me down harder than I expected.  I have an appointment with the surgeon next Monday that will help me reach a decision on attendance.  It is my strong desire to be there as it will be my first ride of any distance on the "New" 83 GL650.  I understand several who can't make TWO are still planning on making the Blue Ridge.  We should have a good turn out there & TWO, maybe.  TWO & BR I hope to make on the 83.  I have a trip to Murray, Ky (where the hack was born) in mid June and VMD at Mid-Ohio in July, both of which I plan to make on the hack/camper.  I didn't work today & had lunch with some friends from the local PD.  In discussing riding one friend said if he ever saw either of my bikes listed for sale he was going out to a local funeral home & make reservations for me!  I still feel that way, it just gets a little harder to bounce back each time but I will go for it until I run completely out of gas!  Bring on the summer!

hey guys,

i'm thinking about taking a trip out to brmc for the little get together.  few questions if you don't mind.

1 - by 5-6 do you mean staying one night?

2 - what is the start time and end time that y'all are aiming for?

3 - any of you camping or are you all trying to stay in cabins?

4 - would it be ok if i showed up on an fz6?

5 - am i right to assume the costs for this would simply be what i eat, use in gas and the fee to camp?

here's to hopin' i'll be able to make it.

I'm thinking me and the lady might be able to make it to the BRMC.  Since I've put on the luggage rack, she's been trying to get me to take time off and go on a camping trip.  Hopefully I'll be able to save up and take off by June.  Be fun to meet all the folks on here.  I've been on here and gotten a lot of help for almost 3 years, will be nice to thank some of you in person for all the help!

I mapped out a tentative route for the April 24 (Saturday) ride at TWO, and then rode it today as a dry-run.

Total distance is about 150 miles, and it will take 4-5 hours depending on stops.

What a ride!  Y'all come and join in the fun.  You will not be disappointed.

No photos were taken of the scenery - it's great as always - but I did shoot this sign near Morganton as a teaser.

And by popular demand, no gravel roads this time.

Gene...hang in there and feel better soon!

Dean... I always camp, the cabins are for those who are not as financially challenged as I. . Camp as many days as you like, but I think I will camp Friday and Saturday nights at the BRMC. Campsite, food and fuel. Bring you own food if you like, but most eat at restaurant. Rides can include a lunch stop at a restaurant. All in all a very inexpensive weekend. (a lot cheaper than Los Vegas or Disneyworld, but more fun than sitting at home IMHO) Ride what you like, some people even ride big fast smooth scooters and some ride bikes that go "Potato Potato" and shake the earth. Then there are the faithful...

Dave... that looks like an awesome ride. Go ahead, rub it in. Where is my instant matter transporter when I need it?? "Beam me down Scotty!" Well, on second thought, riding down there is part of the fun too.

Dave, the ride looks great and the "No Gravel" clause seems to be working.  However, I would like to clear one thing up.  It involves JerryB of the South Carolina chapter.  I received a report that he was also doing some test riding in the area, trying out his new rig.  The picture below is purported to be Jerry (in mufti), can you confirm this, perhaps you saw him on your trip & was too shocked to realize who it was!

I think maybe he went through Steve's matter transporter!

Just got back from the DMV. Looks like La Cosa will be sporting her Vermont plates at TWO until I get the title unscrambled. It will give the gawkers something to talk about.

Jerry, it will be interesting to see what mods get "slammed on" the scoot!  If you ride the CX to TWO be sure to bring a picture of the scoot & its mods.  BTW, after a marathon session of telephone tag I finally connected with GT to confirm our reservations, we have #3, last on the left.  The 83 is suffering from kill switch problems but I hope to have it fixed shortly, a rewire to by-pass the damn thing!

You da man Gene!

Actually I started pulling mods off the Burg.  I was thinking of trading it for a new NT700.  However, the urge passed.  The old '83 S'wing is a better design than the new NT700 in my book.

I am almost positive that the new guy from work will be joining us at TWO. You must forgive him, he rides a Harley. I touched it. It felt dirty!

Jerry, I too want to like the new Honda. I just cant do it. That's a lot of cash i could spend on a Ducati.

It looks like we may not get off scot free this weekend.  Parly cloudy, mostlly sunny, Thursday & Friday, scattered T-storms Friday & Sat.  All we have to do is stay in the sunny part!  Since I am still recovering from surgery I may ride part way Thursday and get in by noon on Friday.  I am n agreement on the new 700, its pretty but not for me.

Michael, the forecast is worse in my area!  Rain Wed. thru Sunday!  Hope it is widely, widely scattered.  Turns out the starter solonoid was bad on the 83, who would have guessed, at onlly 2800 miles but 27+ years!

Take some pics and post em here. I ain't gonna be able to make it down there this time but I want pics! Shucks, the roads here are fun but  molehills compared to those Georgia mountain roads. I"ll have to make it other times for sure.

May the wind always be at your back and the sun overhead as you make your way down the ever winding, smoothly paved, traffic free road!

Now Phil, I know I can't say "you're getting old" 'cos I'm about a year "behind" you, but your forecast weather is quite rideable, and you haven't that far to go, now.
CX/GL men ride in all weather - just talk to Gene about our CX/GL Rally in Cowra, NSW in March this year - we had 5" of rain on the Sunday of the rally - after 2" on the Friday, 3" on the Saturday, and a farewell of 1.5" on the Monday of that rally.
You are one month+ after the equinox and the daylight hours allow you at least two hours more riding time than we have at present.
Go get it, boy.
(Our forecast top temp for tomorrow is 82F - we're nearly 5 weeks short of winter, and it's still summer (what's all this Global Warming about - we have it in spades here in Oz).

What does everyone think about slipping the TWO gathering one week in hopes of better weather?  The extended forecast calls for fair weather next week, although the weekend forecast is not up yet.  It doesn't really matter to me either way.

Michael, I have an extra dome tent if you want to camp.
