What is the general world view of the USA?
|
|
|
|

Been watching the olympics, and between the Danes and the Koreans bad mouthing the US, I just wondered what other countries think of the good old USA as a whole? I know there's several of you Canadians on here, and Bandit and our english friends as well. I won't take anything personally, I already know I'm a red neck.

kingston,iv been to the USA many times,iv loved it every time and found the people to be great. i dont think its the general population that anyone[or not many]feels with contempt.its more to do with politics, which the guy in the street is not accountable for.i wont comment on the political discisions your country makes, because im not really into any politics, yours, mine here or the uk,s
but answer this question, why are so many [non us citizens]applying for a green card to go to the usa to live and work.i think the minimum wait is 8 years, with more applying as i type

I think many people still think of the USA as the land of opportunity and from my experience it can be, there are so many different landscapes it's like a bunch of different countries in one big country and so many beautiful regions, the people well like anywhere else there's the good the bad and the ugly!the governement: like anywhere else mostly bad bad greedy crooks but that's my point of view and i'm only an in between French/American and i don't really want to get into anything heavy like kennedy, the wars,9/11 because i love the USA but i don't think i could live there again....

If I remember reading about humanitarian aid and donations to other countrys, the United States government contributes far more than any other entity.
That's the government, not the donations from the general population or charity groups... These donations we can't even vote on. And a majority goes to countries where we have no vested interest for economics, oil, or military stratigical footholds.
I've heard rumors that there are some people in the world who are not in politics who think kindly of the U.S.

I am proud to be an American! I am proud of the American Government! I am not always proud of everything my government does. This nation has a long and glorious history and I refuse to believe that our best days are behind us. We are the American Government, we the people elect the Mayors, Council men, Senators & Representatives, both at the local, state and national level. Our government is what we have made it! I don't think we should unmake it but we can change it. Big business, big interests in many areas appear to run our government. We need to kick those we don't agree with out of office and find some way to limit the influence of lobbyists. Instead of just gripeing about what happens we need to step up and become involved with the business of running our business (government)! I am still proud to be an American, there are still many places in this world where the statements I just made would bring a lot of trouble into my life! The picture below expresses how I feel about my country! I also think a lot of the 2 other countries represented but for me they have to endure a little too much government. Gene

Gene Gene - way off topic. The thread title says "What is the general world view of the USA?" Today it would be - the USA is damn near the Best Hockey Nation in the World.

Gopher, I realize the topic is the world view of us but some of us have a very poor view of ourselves! I am just tired of being bashed by our own as well as others in the world. Right on about the hockey, I guess you could say North America rules!! As for us, we are the most generous, giving people in the world and those who don't like us are free to feel that way, they are just wrong! Sorry about the ranting! Gene

Getting off topic a little (but that's ok since I started it) we damn near did it, 1 point from gold, and in overtime! Miller was incredible, something like 95 total shots on goal in the whole series and he let in what, 5 or 6?
Back to my original topic, I for one am very happy to be an american, and wouldn't want to live anywhere else. I guess I just want to know why exactly some have such a high dis-like of us? Going back to Bandit's point, I think there are many who'd like to live in the US and yet still dislike the US.

Gene, Excuse me but "Right on about the hockey, I guess you could say North America rules!! " Whats with that? Be generous - today Canada rules. This is a loaded thread and has the potential to cause trouble for this forum. A google search of 'anti americanism' will provide many informative, logical, and unemotional sources into the phenomenem. A good one to start with is http://www.vexen.co.uk/USA/hateamerica.aspx That site will also give factual info on foreign aid etc. That is all for me on this subject.

No way I´ll start to poke around in this matter. Simply just too complicated and multifaceted.

I love America, and Americans.
SOME Americans come across as if "our shit don't stink", but those peeps are in every country. The only trouble is the American ones have a platform to let everyone else know about it.
I was on a racing forum today, and an American guy was slagging Swiss for being Neutral in WWII, "In light of the attrocities..."
I simply asked what his country's official position was between Sept 39 and Dec 41.
Oh, and Sture, coming from the country where hockey was invented, it's just HOCKEY. The ICE part is naturally assumed!

Well, back to the 'on' topic. In my earlier days (1980's) I traveled nearly all around the world. I never visited Asia, but I did Europe, Africa, Australia, Phillipines, Guam (which is sort of part of the US) and I have to say, people always showed me respect - after it was corrected, that I was Canadian, and not an American. When it was assumed my nationality to be an American - the mannerisms of staff in restaurants, or hotels was almost suspicious. Once they saw my passports, all of a sudden, hospitality improved dramatically.
What's my impression of Americans? I have many friends below the border, including some Canadian family that have chosen to live, work, and even marry into the United States. I have been met with many expressions of friendship and hospitality in all my travels on the other side of the border. Granted, as a traveler, it is customary for people in the service industry to supply not only the service, but the hospitality to their patrons, I have never been disappointed with the courtesy of all the people I've met in the United States.
My only impression of the people of the United States ...........Well, out of respect for this forum, ...........I love 'em all!

My understanding is that HOCKEY is / was the name of a game they played in Egypt and other countries, a couple of thousand years ago. On grass. Today we call that game (in modernized form) land hockey, to distinguish from ice hockey, which, just as you say, has more or less taken over the name HOCKEY.
But - at least here - where we perhaps may be a little more history-oriented than you on the other side of the pond (I said "may be") "ice hockey" is the correct term - even if "hockey" seems to be growing on us these days.
Even if Sweden sometimes is not too bad at "hockey" - (let´s forget about 2010) we surely didn´t invent it. It´s said that something like it existed in France and the Netherlands some centuries ago and that the recent form of it came from Canada in the 18th century.
It´s a big sport here. My hometown - Gävle ~ 60 k people at the time, had three teams in the highest division in the sixties.
Not the same thing today - only one team still there. And we´re still exporting our good players to all over the world.

Well, to differentiate, We refer to ourselves as Canadians, as does the rest of the world. (I have yet to hear a Canadian refer to themselves as an American). People from the U.S. of A. refer to themselves as Americans, as does the rest of the world
Granted, we are all "North Americans" if you drop the 'North', the world pretty much refers to the differences shown above.

Gene thanks for your concern, me 'im fine just a few broken branches and road signs flew off(i picked one up to make a coffee table!) we did have a pretty bad storm out here and there are many people that have lost everything, work your whole life to be able to retire or live in a descent home and zap all gone; if your lucky to be alive it's not so bad i guess right? but the truth is i'm pissed because the land that has been flooded should had never been sold for building homes, these morons think that they can stop mother nature with dirt and metal or whatever, well now they have learned there lesson unfortunately it had to be with a bunch of dead people, and it's the same political bs here: blabla and pretty words from sarkozy but they don't really give a damn! they will still sell anything as long as money comes in.....

Well i disagree. i used to go camping up in Canada and the people there got really ticked when you would say you are American, they said we were from the states and they were from the provinces. Well thats my take on it and i still say i am from the states. it made sence to me and i am sticking to it.

I'll wade into this very sticky thread.
Just to disclose, I'm Canadian and my wife is dual American/Canadian.
I've worked all over the world and believe that people are people, it's our culture and experiences that make us different.
While working in middle-of-nowhere China my translator said to me "I'm glad you're not American, I don't like Americans" so I told him "You shouldn't say that, you haven't met many Americans and individually they are the nicest people you will meet. You don't have to like what America does, or what the American Government does but you shouldn't not like Americans"
The problem with perceptions of other countries is that as a citizen abroad you somehow become responsible for everything your country or countrymen have ever done, so the perspective is always skewed.
Anyway my own opinion is that America is a fine and beautiful country with great opportunities and wonderful people. America also has some serious problems that will continue to get worse unless people work together.
Oh, and your national anthem is unsingable too, I like "America the Beautiful" much better. ; )
Greetings from Canada!!

Nice post Doug, I was on another forum recently and a bloke from England was dissing a Swede for their Nazi collaboration in WWII. 70 years ago.
Swede's are real nice peeps to, every single one i've met, although they can be dirty hockey players, and like to take dives.

My Dad's parents moved to Vermont from Quebec and he became American by birth. My Mom was from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia and carried a green card all her life. That makes me a multi ethnic redneck. I couldn't care less where a person comes from. Decent people are decant people and assholes are assholes wherever you go.

That must have been an odd clique you were camping with. The only people I've heard that upon introduction call themselves from a province - are from Quebec or Newfoundland. Having said that, there were a lot of proud CANADIANS from Quebec at the Olympics last month. For two weeks, I really felt we had our act together - coast to coast to coast. A truly U.P.A. (United Provinces of America??? ) (I've never been told I was from the provinces - ever)
