CX650C choke cable not clamping in carbs
|

Howdy. I have a choke cable (650 custom) that does not sit tight in the carb bracket. The bracket appears to be unmolested, so I'm leaning towards believing the cable is missing a piece at it's end (which seems odd because there is still a nipple thing clamped at the end of the outer cable). Or, that the cable is simply the wrong one (this bike was a basket case project from the P.O.).

 The book shows this:
which looks slightly longer and thicker (minds out of the gutter, gents) than my cable nipple, by comparing proportions. CMSNL.com shows this image, which does not look my end-of-cable (mine doesn't have the rubber piece, or a metal ring opposite to keep it from sliding through the carb clamp).

Any thoughts? I think I'm just going to have to wrap it with duct tape or something so it is thick enough to get clamped at the bracket. As it is now, it just slides right through.
Thanks,
Coop

This is a case of somebody buying the wrong cable. The overall length of the cable isn't the important measurement, it's the length of the 'throw', as you have found out. The best bet is to get an original Honda cable - that is spec'd for your bike.

You might try taking the little clamp piece off and bending it so that it will grab the outer cable when you tighten the screw. I had to do that to keep the cable from slipping.

Why not order the right cable and in the meantime take electrical tape and wrap it tight around the cable to the thickness that you need. Then put it in the screw clamp and see if it does the job. Maybe you don't even need to buy a new cable. It's got to be worth a shot.

Maybe I am missing something, but the OP never said his cable doesn't work because it has the wrong "throw" or whatever. He stated his clamp didn't clamp down on the cable. Again, perhaps I don't understand the problem he is having, even after re reading his post. Every problem is another opportunity to learn! Isn't it wonderful?

I guess I wasn't very clear: to muddy up the waters a little more, the cable does reach into the clamp area on the carb (it's long enough), it just slides right through it (not thick enough, or too narrow to be clamped).
I guess I would rather not fix it by bending the clamp for fear of fatigue cracking the metal. I will probably tape the end of the cable or put some aluminum pie plate around it to make it fatter and get a good clamp grip on it. Or maybe use some plastic or other metal.
Thanks for all the ideas.
Coop
EDIT: I will post some photos when I git'r'done, if anyone's interested.

I wouldn't worry about fatiguing the metal clamp by bending it, but your idea of shimming it is a good one. You could cut a strip of metal from a soda/beer can and use that.

I have a generic automotive choke cable on mine and I slid a short piece of plastic tubing over the end to make it big enough for the clamp to grip. It works perfectly.
