Hey guys, I've been lurking for a while, but now that I actually have my bike I decided to come out of the shadows. I'm Jody, 21, living in Bakersfield, CA and I just recently got an 82 GL500. It's my first bike though I'm not new to the CX/GL world, my dad had a CX Custom back in the day. I've already found this website to be a great help, I need to replace the fork seals and some assorted minor stuff, and after reading on here its not really intimidating me any more.
I'll try to get some pics up soon after a washing, it's the usual brown color, has a windjammer on it and I got the trunk and a rear seat, but unfortunately no side bags. A big thanks goes to the guy hosting this place!

Welcome to the group, Jody. There are many guys and gals on here more
than willing to share the knowledge. Fork seals are not a big deal, but
just something to learn if you have never done it before. Stick around
and post some pictures. Also add your location and model bike to your
profile page.

Welcome to the board Jody! Glad to hear you have a "Twisted Twin", they are really tough bikes and with a little care will run forever. Are you new to riding or have you owned other bikes? Gene

Congratulations on your new bike and welcome to the CX/GL500 forum.
How much wrenching/mechanic-ing experience do you have? Compared with other bikes, CX/GL500's are much easier to work on.
Regarding your fork seals, getting the bolt out of the bottom of the fork can be frustrating because they are always in there tight. Be sure that you have a good quality Allen wrench -- no Walmart tools will do -- because its likely that you're going to have to really give them serious torque to crack them loose. Or you can hit them with an impact wrench. But a newbie can do fork seals!

Thanks for the welcome guys. I bookmarked that link blindstitch posted, that'll come in handy. To answer Gene's question, yep this is my first bike. I'm still learning, super slow maneuvers are what I enjoy practicing the most, a friend gave me a copy of the "Ride Like a Pro" video, it really inspired me to be precise and master the machine.

Thanks Dash. I'm no stranger to wrenching, no one works on my iron but me. It was a lack of $$$ started that years back, but now I just enjoy doing it, so much so that I started taking classes to get an aircraft mechanic license. Funny how things work out sometimes.

Jody, I couldn't help but notice the airplane in the picture, What do you fly? I soloed a cherokee 235 before I graduated from college and ran out of money for my flight training. I guess that is why i bought a bike, it's almost as good a feeling. Good luck with your new bike.

Well that's a first. I never saw a guy named Jody. But I did see one named Robin that you didn't want to screw with.

Yeah, I'm a pilot. I fly light singles and twins, pretty much whatever someone will give me the keys to. Other than cars (and now bikes) aviation is pretty much my life, I'm almost done with college and hope to be an air traffic controller and eventually a flight instructor. Oh and Chris, I completely understand what you're saying, a lot of my friends who fly ride as well, I had to see what I was missing!
Blindstitch, well I'm just honored to be the first, apparently the name has been around for a while; in the WW2 era, Jody was the nickname given to the guy who steals your girl while you're deployed.

Jody, looks like you will be a good addition to the board! Just as you learned to fly a course on riding would stand you in good stead. Even though I have been riding since 1952, when I got back into riding after quite a few years lay off I took the Rider Safety course. It did 2 things for me. It helped me become familiar with the limits of my bike and gain confidence and at completion my TN driver's motorcycle license was issued. Now I have the valued "M" addition on my license. Enjoy "flying at ground level". Gene

Great looking bike you have there. The CX500 custom was basically the bike I learned to ride on...aside from some dirt bike riding in fields and such. Good luck with the air traffic controller/flight instruction. I still do a little flight instruction on the side and it's a great way to continue learning new things about flying. Have fun with the new bike!

Thanks guys, here's a google maps link to the route I took. The photo was taken at where Bena meets Caliente-Bodfish. Its a pretty laid back ride, nice for a cruise, although the part of Bena that runs North/South is a popular spot for families to shoot. Someone had black powder rifles, and one shot made such a huge BOOM right as I passed by, that I rose off the seat a few inches! http://maps.google.com/maps...
It's a nice place to go, usually nobody but bikers and the local ranchers are out there, I found it looking for twisties in my GTO, but its too narrow for fun in a car. I havent been out there in a while, so it was nice to see the change in color since last summer. Here's what it looked like last June:

Stitch, It's a march cadence song.
"You had a good home when you left"!

"Jody was there when you left".
"You're right".
"Now Jody's in your home,

Am I right or wrong.

etc. etc.
Oh by the way, welcome aboard, Jody.

Thanks lucky, I know Kingman pretty well, flew in there a couple times, even spent a week there, but thats another story. I lived in the Prescott area from 06-08, hopefully I can move back to AZ once I finish school. If I ever find myself heading that way I'll let you know.

Welcome to the boards Jody! I'm about an hour north of you near the Naval base. We sure are lucky to have the perfect weather (or nearly) for year round riding, but I'm happy that Toole fog is finally past. I got my GL500 just about a year ago, my first bike, and have since jumped whole hog into the motorcycle "hobby". Be careful because it's very addictive - to date I've bought 4 so far (2 parts bikes, two that have been fixed up) and I see no end in sight. Then again, based on what I've read so far you're no stranger to expensive hobbies. ;)

Thanks for the welcome sarah! I've driven past NAS Lemoore a few times, usually to see whats up and flying while driving back from fresno. It's kinda hard for me as a bit of an adrenaline junkie to have cheap fun, I finally go into riding (oddly enough due to constant encouragement from my parents) and I cant get enough. I'm stuck in LA for school this weekend and I can feel the withdrawls!
Oh and rickbert, I am in no way, shape, or fashion a raiders fan! I dont track the NFL as close as I do college ball (go USC), but I will always cheer for my 49'ers no matter how much they may suck in a given season.

Glad I have a USC fan to ask this question of was thinking bout this a month or so ago:
Do the USC fans feel like Pete Carroll bolted on them right when the going was going to get tough due to the NCAA investigations ? I mean as an outsider that's just how I saw it....as soon as the goin might get a little tough he darted to get away from it....I saw that as cowardly. However I can see how some might think "I don't blame him, he had another opportunity in the NFL". I guess what we'll never know is "would he have made the move if everything was still rosey at USC ??"
Just wondering if I'm off base here and how a true USC fan feels about it.
To top all that off do you think they did themselves any favors by hiring Lane Kiffen ? Just seems they added more controversey and negative attention to themselves by hiring this guy....meaning I think he/himself is a destraction of his own.

Well all I can offer is speculation, but it wouldnt surprise if the coming investigation may have played a part in Carroll's decision. However, I dont think it was a primary cause, but if I had a potential disaster coming my way, it would make that NFL job all the more appealing. I'm not offended by it at all, bottom line is that he needs to do what he feels is best for his career, regardless of what organization it's for.
As for Kiffen, he definitely would not have been my first pick, he certainly comes in with some baggage. I'll give him a chance, let's see if he can last longer as a trojan than he did as a raider...
