DAMN CELL PHONES AND DRIVING!!!
|
|
|
|
|
I am declaring War on all those who talk, text or otherwise use cellphones while they are driving. I have done it, talk that is, but I will never do it again. When I get in a vehicle, if I am driving, the phone is turned off, they do have a switch! Last Thursday I drove my little S10 Chevy truck from the Boro to Ft. Polk, La, a distance of close to 700 miles to pick up my oldest grandson, Matt, who is a medic in the army. He will be getting out in May or June and he wanted to surprise his Mother one last time with a visit home! He picked this weekend for obvious reasons.
I did not pay much attention to weather reports and after I crossed the Mississippi river I found myself driving into the teeth of a snowstorm! I gave up in Alexandria, La & grabbed a motel room with ice & snow covering the streets. Next morning it had turned to rain and I was able to pick Matt up with no problems. As we started east the weather turned on us again! The snow got deeper but the roads remained fairly clear. As evening fell and the temps dropped we began encountering "black" ice on bridges, talk about "pucker factor". The little truck did well and we were able to continue. Somewhere east of Jackson, Mississiippi, on I 20 I came up on an 18 wheeler who was going even slower than us (about 50/55, except on bridges!). I began to pass and I was about mid-way of the trailer when he began to move into my lane. Now the horn on my little truck is not very loud and he continued to drift, I was into the ice & snow on the left shoulder before I got his attention! As we passed his cab both Matt & I made eye contact with the driver and discovered the sob was driving with his elbows in the wheel and texting on a damn phone! Neither of us gave him a "one finger" salute, as bad as we wanted to, it would have only made a bad situation worse.
We made it to my daughter's home in the iced-in metro area of Atlanta (Villa Rica, Ga.) at about 1:30 in the morning. Needless to say my grandson's plans to surprise his Mother worked to perfection! Fast forward to yesterday afternoon and I-75 just north of Cartersville, Ga. I was cruising north & missing Matt when I came upon a car driving at a very slow pace & all over 2 or the 3 lanes! Yep, you guessed it, a driver yakking on a cell phone. I saw 2 more, neither as out of control as the first, before I made it home to the Boro.
Thank you for reading my rant & I hope you join me in this war! Gene

Gene I understand that. I do use my cell phone when driving but not in traffic or bad weather and usually because I really have to but it seems like the rest of the world has no limits. On monday I went up to David's early in the morning and the traffic was surging between 70mph and 0mph. I was in Melody's car which is a little geo over my 4x4 ranger so I took it easy as I watched car after car not paying attention go left and right off the road. I bet by the time I got up to Davids I had seen 20 cars fly off the road.
The good thing is several states are cracking down on phones and driving so maybe something will change but still there are idiots out there being idiots.
If I could get a hands free unit things would probably be better but I bet I don't talk on the phone 200 minutes a month so it wouldn't be worth it.

My CX 500 came with a Wolo air horn, at least I think it is, it has I also think two air ports out, it only has one small high pitched horn but its LOUD! I am going to add one more of a lower pitch because I think thats the auditory "grabber" to most people hearing two sounds at once of a hi/low sound. Not an alternating European effect, just something to rattle your fillings.

I´m 100 % with you in this, Gene!
I can´t for the life of me understand why it is allowed at all. Several countries have laws against it - mine hasn´t. I see them every day - car drivers with their cell phones in full swing. They are all over the place with their cars - in roundabouts, crossings and on open roads. Yesterday I saw one in the middle of a crossing - stopped - obviously asking someone in the phone about which direction to take. My heart doesn´t need situations like that one!!
In public transports (buses) there are signs that forbid you to talk to the driver. Still he´ll have two hands on the wheel....

That's why I have my bluetooth set. I'm still in complete control of the vehicle - it is no different than carrying on a conversation with a passenger.

Actually, it's very different. A passenger in the car will see the same things the driver sees. If a situation arises that requires more of the driver's attention, the conversation will pause, often without either realizing it, until the situation is past.
Talking on the phone, even with a hands-free set, the person on the other end has no idea what's happening around the car, so that important shift in focus never occurs. Experiments have shown that drivers using hands-free phones are just as distracted as those with the phone in their hand. They have found, though, that a texting driver is much more distracted.

I will talk on the phone. very rarely, and I certainly keep the conversations short. I do not text whatsoever though.
The other day i was riding. I was going pretty fast (60 in a 45) and this girl in a huge escalade blows by me (had to be doing 70+), partly in my lane, and when I look over she isnt even looking at the road. Nope. lets just say i didnt try to catch up.

I'd like to see more of the inforcing like in Spain - here in Ontario, talking or texting will net you a $155 fine. I have yet to hear of anybody getting that ticket.
Personally, I use a bluetooth enabled GPS - like so many others, the amount I use the phone can be measured in seconds per month so I don't feel guilty. (for RichNCT a phone you can take in your car, 'talks' with the new fangled thingy on the dashboard that tells you where to go - so that you don't have to look at a map)
My daughter (nearly 15) insists on texting me - even when she knows I'm driving. Funny thing is she gets really irate when I don't reply pronto! I've told her, it's against the law for me to 'text' while driving but since she isn't old enough to drive - she just has no understanding.

I'd be very interested in seeing this report - it is literally no different to me than when a passenger is sitting next to me talking. The person on the other end doesn't NEED to know what's going on - it's not his/her responsibility to handle the vehicle. If my passenger is leaned back with his or her eyes closed, is it any different?
Put another way, I don't need them to know what's going on. I'm perfectly happy to ignore them while I handle whatever situation arises.
I like to think that irregardless of what anyone is doing behind the wheel, they dedicate 100% attention to any situation that pops up. And quite honestly, if you can't keep track of a MINIMUM of 10 seconds ahead of you while driving, you have NO BUSINESS BEHIND THE WHEEL of a 1 ton object hurtling 60+ mph.

While many people seem to handle driving and talking on the cell phone just fine without incident, it seems like just as many don't. They become totally immersed in the phone conversation and completely "zone out" of driving. I don't know why this doesn't seem to happen with passengers in the same vehicle.
Anyone who spends significant time driving in traffic sees it all the time. Just this morning on the commute in to work, a woman in front of me was drifting back and forth across two lanes of traffic with her left turn signal on for many miles. She was going significantly slower than surrounding vehicles. You guessed it, she had a phone glued to her ear and a dazed, far-off look in her eyes.

That's very true - statistically, it seems to be more women than men that fall into that category.
Any conversation that requires that much attention should be continued after safely stopped out of the way!

I used to defend people who used cell phones with hands free systems... after all, what was the difference with speaking to them and speaking to a passenger? Recently, however, I read something that made me rethink the situation:
When you are talking to a passenger and something happens that should draw your immediate attention, it will draw the attention of your passenger as well. The conversation sort of fades until the situation passes. With a cell phone, it's different. The person on the other end of the line doesn't know the guy in front of you suddenly slammed on his brakes, so he keeps on talking... which divides your attention.
So while I still use bluetooth in the car and on the bike occasionally, it's not the ideal situation. Ideal involves pulling off the road to have your phone conversation.

Only divides your attention if you don't know how to focus. ;) I know it's just an example, but even if the guy in front of you slams on his brakes, you've left plenty of room to stop, right? RIGHT?
IMHO, the majority of accidents involving a cell phone are not JUST the cell phone's fault - the driver is inattentive, with a serious lack of situational awareness.
Just assume everyone else on the road will do the stupidest possible thing at any given moment, and 9/10 times (at least here in Florida) you'll be psychic.

Very interesting... particularly this quote - Live Science Article wrote: | | "With younger adults, everything got worse," said Arthur Kramer, who led the

took longer to react to the changes." |

What constitutes a 'young adult'? 18-24? It's an interesting article, but it's a drawing of conclusions - it doesn't provide the data in any way. That makes me leary.

This isn't even good data! There's a pretty big jump from saying '... no evidence that bans on hand held use by drivers has affected...collision claims.' to 'Hands free sets are just as dangerous as non-hands free.'
Randall-in-Mpls wrote:
Now this is a good data set from which to draw conclusions. Unfortunately, the hands free vs non-hands free are not shown in the data, and are just lumped together under cell phone. I'm going to see if I can contact the researcher and get the data.
Randall-in-Mpls wrote:
Where is the data to support that conclusion? The 2nd article even states:

Ok, so without the data, all we know for certain they concluded is that college-age drivers don't brake as quickly when talking on either a handheld or a hands-free phone.

That's true, but there's a difference - it has been proven without a doubt that driving while drunk impairs your ability to handle a motor vehicle. It has not been proven, that I've seen, the same is true for hands-free cellular activity.
That's what I'm curious about :)

Everyone needs to do like me! I don't own a cell phone.
I'm not that important nor is the caller to disturb my driving ... or anything else.
I check my answering machine at home every two days when I am touring. Even if someone dies ... the funeral is always at least two days later.
The phone I have at home is great too ... with caller ID I don't even talk to the people I don't want to.

Well in defense of the cell phone I have moved more than enough in the last 10 years that keeping a land line with all the set up fees and monthly fees. When I got my cell phone it cost $15 for all the minutes I needed and my landline was $50. Since then the nuts of cell phone vs land line has gone nuts with text messaging, video messaging, and internet. My cellphone somehow is still cheaper than when I paid for my last land line.
But they have their use so if you don't want to be bothered put them on silent and leave them at home or take them with you and let it vibrate your pocket away.

Dave, I thought I was the only one left that didn't own a cell phone. It is a small, but select group left that doesn't feel the need to constantly be in contact with everyone. I can do very well, thank you, by not answering the phone every five minutes to reply to the drivel others want to create. And I get a lot more done too. Perhaps someday, I will read a text message, and maybe, God forbid, even send one. Those days I hope are far in the future.
I also don't have cable TV. But I receive 11 HD channels for free off the air. My main problem with this is that the tour buses that stop in front of my house for the pictures of my outdoor antenna, tend to block the driveway.
My hats off to you and any others that refuse to follow the herd into oblivion.

It is pretty well established that young people ( up to the age of 25 years ) do not have the "judgment" portion of their brains fully developed. Hence, insurance rates are typically more expensive for young people and do not typically make a significant decline until after the age of 25. Also, we live in a period when the jargon "MULTI-TASKING" is commonly used in social circles and in business. This is a bogus concept. It is scientifically impossible for the human brain to multi-task. All thought is accomplished in SERIAL fashion. That is, one-decision-after-the-other. I have had passengers in my car talk to me, and as I got into the conversation I found myself missing turns to our destination, and less focused on the highway action surrounding us. I do not listen to the radio, to CD's, or talk on the cell phone nor invite conversation while driving either a car or a motorcycle. Humans have the capacity to perform many practiced physical motions, but they must have already anticipated what they are going to do and then have thoughtfully impressed such motions in their brains. Hence, a bicyclist can pedal, shift gears and tap the hand brake simultaneously, or an aircraft pilot can manipulate multiple controls in an emergency. When we drive on the highway we need to focus on what is happening ahead, plus the side of the road, and even what is coming from behind. In each case we must continually "cycle" our attention from one direction to the other and allow a safety margin for our reactions to possible danger. When that safety margin is erroded we are that much closer to disaster. I believe ALL states need to acknowledge that cell phones are a distraction from, otherwise, safe driving . . . and that gives the benefit of the doubt to the NUT-case in the lane next to you.

No more cell phones while driving here in MA, at least not for texting. It amazes me that the state needed to make that a law, a little scary thinking about somebody driving and looking at their phones key board and typing out whole sentences!

Studies also show that Eating while driving is even more dangerous than using a cell phone....

ok i got one up on you all...ive done the double death one. talked on cell phone while riding!!!!
now the story... i was on a back road no traffic and going slow. wife called and i felt it vibrating. so it was more of a point of could i do it, and could i actually hear and talk on it while riding. and the answer is yes... but i do not condone this or use in a car. i like many just refuse to use it while driving.
