HONDA CX 650 TURBO OR CBX 1000
Reply Quote
I'm taking a course at my local community college and have recently got to know the motorcycle tech instructor, and he has a couple bikes for sale and one is a Honda CX 650 turbo. It appears to be in pretty good shape cosmetic as well as well as mechanics.  As we were talking we got interupted so we could not finish discussing the bike,  I think he said it needed a new cam chain could be wrong though.

Just want to know if this bike is one of those that is impossible to find parts for or is finicky. Or are the parts the same as a GL650 or whatever. Is it a bike to avoid?

The cam chain fix should not be a problem, and the bike is not "finicky"- in fact it is more maintenance free than a carbureted, less exotic bike.  That said, parts are hard to find.  What are you looking for in a bike (price, ergonomics, power, size etc.).  I love my little '76 Kawasaki KZ400,  but for reasons far different than the CX650TD or majestic CBX1000.  How much is he asking for the 650T?

Bullpoopie.
The CXT's are definitely more maintenance intensive than standard CX's, especially where the stators are concerned.

That being said, the CXT uses the same cam chain as a standard CX650(E or C), GL650, or CX500T and the same tensioner system works on all four bikes.

CX500 Turbo, GL650I, Two CX650E's, and one Crown Jewel of the CX line- CX650T.

Well, he asked about parts compatiblity between the CX (one of the all-time bulletproof bikes)  and CXT... but the maintenance question was showdown between a CXT and a CBX1000.  Have you ever tried to overhaul and synchronize 6 carburetors, and adjust all those valves?  Once you drop a new stator in the CXT, it has turnkey reliabilty, and you really don't have to tweak or adjust anything.  I stand by my assertion that the CX650TD is not a finicky bike, and that parts are hard to find.

Are these "school" bikes?

If they are they are not suppose to be sold and most likely will not have title and some have the VIN removed or the neck stamped NOT FOR SALE

No there not donated so the bikes have vins and titles.  I know what your talking about though as they have several different motors and such donated from lots of manufactures.

Yeah, been there done that. I owned an original '79 CBX, and have adjusted the valves and synched the carbs. Not real difficult, however, very time consuming. The reward was a great bike, with that Porsche engine sound. Those CV carbs are a bit finicky, but once you get them in tune the bike runs great, and always draws a crowd. I sold my CBX to an attorney from Los Angeles for $4,000 after I had owned it for 10 years. I had bought it from the original owner in the early 90's. I still love the Turbo's though. They are relatively reliable, except for the stator, which I have done three over the years. No big deal, as they are readily available and will require a committment of about a full day or two, depending on your tooks and skills.

That would be the cam chain tensioner that is no longer available?

One of the cam tensioner blades is no longer available, not even from across the pond at this point.

My 650T, 500T, Silverwing, and Eurosport all got new ones when they got their Triple or Quadruple Bypass.
All of the used parts were in good shape with little or no wear, so basically, I have three spare sets of all tensioner parts.

So how many of us have their spare cam chain tensioner parts hidden away?

I do - got mine used (with little to no wear) for $15.

How difficult would it be for a machine shop to reproduce this part if they had a good one to examine?

See also this thread Rich...it is quite possible that Ken purchased the last several of 14511-MC7-000 from across the pond.

This was as of May 2009

Re: 14511-ME2-000 part (#5 on the diagram), alt #: 14511-MC7-000

I checked the following places and none of them had the slipper for the cam chain tensioner.

 - Service Honda in the U.S.
 - David Silver in the U.K.
 - Western Honda in the U.S.
 - Speed Supplies in the U.S.
 - Cernic's in the U.S.
 - Discount Honda Parts in the U.S.
 - Burlington Cycle in Canada
 - Econo Honda in New Zealand

Finally found one at John Oldfield in the U.K. and a second one (as a future spare) from CMS in The Netherlands. This hunt is over.

You have a 650 engine?  The 500 (non turbo) components are still available, so you guys have nothing to worry about...for now.

Untill you buy a few 500"s??

The price of the parts are going much higher - supply and demand I suspect.
