I've become addicted to the show. It's wild to see these guys survive and work near the Arctic Circle. I'm thinking of signing up this winter. What do ya think :) :) Any of you guys truckers?? I'm an arborist and "big-time" CDL driver myself, class B (that's for big-time) haha. Maybe not ice-road big time, but I can dream.

I use to watch it when I had cable. Always seems like on tv there are problems that wouldn't happen in real life but then again there are problems in real life that may never happen on tv.

I'm not an Ice Road Trucker per se but I have maybe some thoughts, first off you are watching a TV show that for the most part is edited and often staged to create suspense, melodramatics and above all a captive audience that in turn should hypothetically become consumers from ad placement.
Now that I have that off my chest I'll give you a low down on what I think, I you absolutely out of your mind? Driving a tractor trailer in arctic conditions is not a just walk in the park and give it a shot sort of thing with high hopes of making a ton of money, oh yes you can do it if you honestly have what it takes, not many do, and frankly I don't think I do and I happen to live in Alaska since 1992 and I drive truck up here.
No I don't drive tractor trailer, I drive a concrete mixer that fully loaded is near 80,000lbs, I drive in occasionally late in the season on iced over roads, in the snow and below zero temps.
And I hate every single minute of it, the only reason I do keep on driving is that jobs are hard to find where I live, good paying jobs are even more infrequent, its very competitive, its also very seasonal with instances of your employment being only for a couple of months. I usually work all year but the last two years I have been working only about 8 months per year. Then I draw unemployment.
During the winter months its cold dark and miserable to move around bundled in layers of clothing, you have to be acclimated to it, I can work outside in sub freezing temps for hours just in my lightweight winter thermals but when its below zero you soon find your ears and hands screaming at you. And a truck driver has to work, putting chains on is no easy task and even more so not all trucks have the best traction devices or equipment. In those shows they cannot adequately describe the demands cold weather places on the body, you have to eat a lot, you have to use a lot of vitamins or you suffer seasonal affliction disorder from the lack of daylight, in the winter its dark....a lot, often just a couple of hours of weak cold sunlight. Dehydration occers very often because the air is very dry.
Here is the most important part, Alaska is still a frontier part, this state is more than twice the size of Texas but it has less than 3/4 of a million people of which most live around Anchorage, those that live in the city rarely venture far away, cost of living is high, and the job market usually prefers to hire local first, I know firsthand, it took me years to break through that barrier. I had skills being a heavy equipment mechanic of which I still am but I had to learn other skills, you have to be versatile in several fields to really survive here, I live here year round, its depressing during the long winter when off season, I sleep a lot, watch TV and live on the internet, like right now.
But from around mid march until november I am too busy doing my job, often its a 12 hour day 6 days a week or more, I have worked weeks straight during the peak construction time in mid june, with over 20 hours of daylight and mild weather its a rush to start and finish most jobs in just a few months. Its traditional up here to make you whole years wages in less than 9 months, I do and I save up for winter the best I can because there isn't much work to be found during the winter.
And I think that show is stupid, it creates a false image of what its all about, make one guy the bad guy, add a cute girl, show the young driver making mistakes, its all about creating drama, and its mostly BS. It is dangerous, no doubt about that, its very factual for the most part but it also sends a wrong message to those looking for a challenge, but then again I wanted a challenge many years ago when I decided to move here, I met them and earned my position, it didn't make me rich but I may have more than most people in respects, my home, land and truck are all paid for and I have very few bills, I learned to live with our "boom and bust" economy. Many don't, I see and hear all sorts of instances of people moving to the state and then find its just too hard to live here because yes it is. It really is tough to live in Alaska.
But if you have a goal or a vision then don't stop, I didn't and I'm glad to live here.

Nice write up, but quite frankly, it's getting pretty stupid - I mean the 'reality tv' thing. This year, we have Ice road Truckers, and Pawn Stars. We've been inundated with "lets build a chopper in under one week"... let's fab up some funky car and do it with a time limit. American/Canadian/UK idol. Come On Holiwood... Can we not see a good drama from the "Street Cleaners of San Francisco" or how about "Librarians - The forgotten teachers - Ho do they cope!" ... What's next.

Sarnia,
Totally agree with you....it's like there's a "reality" show about EVERYTHING....what's next ?
And ALL those shows are so frustrating to watch because they'll show a segment then go to commercial.....then when it comes back from the commercial break they kill time by TOTALLY reviewing the previous segment before moving on.....I'm constantly yelling at the TV saying "YOU ALREADY COVERED THAT, MOVE ON, WE DIDN'T FORGET THAT THAT TRUCK HAD A FLAT BEFORE THE COMMERCIAL BREAK"....LOL

Don't forget Survivor Hero's and Villans. I don't watch survivor but it's a load of crap that when they get done with one good reality tv show that they have to me 15 more episodes pounding it into the ground.
I admit I use to watch American Chopper and Monster Garage but I can only watch so much of a suspense fill threat that someone is going to put their size 12 in someones ass.
Maybe we need a show based on that. People who like a boot in their asses and the proctologist they visit.
What are we on Real world 48. Mtv must have made millions putting a group full of morons together.

Perhaps "The
Proctologists of Orange County!"
I'm with you on the Survivor thing... I watched the first one, with some interest. Once the 'formula' was established, it just seemed like re-hashing over and over.

Should be on watch.ctv.ca, don't see it listed yet.
I usually don't watch online, but I missed a lot of stuff during the Olympics, Amazing Race for one.

All free stations should have their shows streaming from their websites. That's what I do if I miss one on free tv.
