I removed the wiring box (some work around it) and the fairing harness. I stuffed the wires in a Yamaha headlight bucket that I picked up off ebay. Ebay for the turn signals (front & rear) and universal mounting brackets, also.
You'll need a copy of the wiring diagram. It's in the back of the Service Manual found HERE.
Here's what I ended up with -

Bought on Craigslist - Restored from Ebay: 82 GL500I - now without the "I" -------------------------------------------------------------- I had all my ducks in a row, but they wondered off!

That's what you're looking for. It's from a yamaha but nothing bad there. Mines from an xs1100.
You also need headlight brackets. Also called headlight ears. The gl has a special wire type set but if you cant find it you don't have to use it and can use standard brackets.

rwnemisis,
What kind of look are you going for?
I figure d you are only wanting to spend X $'s into the bike - unless you are like some of us older guys that really love the bike (we tend to overspend because we want the "best" 500 or 650).
Depending on what your end goal is, you could try a different kind of headlight?

well i plan on doing ALOT to it eventually lol, plan on having this thing for a good long time, but it has to be small amounts at a time so the cheaper the better at least at the moment.
This is my first actuall bike i own... the biggest bike i have ever ridden was around 1000cc and i tell ya i really enjoy this gl500 way better.
I eventually would like to turn it into a bobber style bike but thats further down the road, at the moment i just wanted the touring package off of it and im gonna put some new pipes on it here soon also, im attempting to do as much work myself as possible, although i dont know much about any of it but that makes it all the more fun.
Basically my goal is to say " thats mine" and not just mean hey i own the bike but hey i did all that to it myself, its my first real project lol.
Thanks for all the great help everyone, i now have my brackerts and headlight on thier way to me and hopefully i can post some updated pics once i get the front off.

rwnemisis, the great benefit of your bike starting out as an interstate model is that you have dual front brakes, that the standard model doesn't.
If you do remove the fairing and trunk, having the side hardbags still looks good on a naked version.
Unless you have a strong desire to get rid of them, save the faitring and such.
I believe once you have this one for a while, picking up another cheap to make a bobber into gives you one to ride while tinkering on the other. once the bobbers rolling, you can switch this back to the touring package... Just some ideas, take pics for the progress!
Couple GL's and CX650 ... everythings in work....

I just took the windjammer and trunk off my '79 Deluxe, the headlight from the windjammer bolted right onto a set of mounting ears from an '83 CB450 I picked up. I also picked up a set of turn signals that had mounting posts long enough to be used as the bolts to hold the headlight to the brackets. So I converted from the windjammer to the headlight and post turn signals for ~$62. Look into popping the 7"-er out of the windjammer if you want to. I just pulled the wiring laying around back a little and held them in place with some fence wire.

Thorivola, the Hondaline fairing headlight is not a bucket in a fairing design. Take the Hondaline one out and you get something that looks like this:

That's what mine looks like. It had that headlight in the Windjammer. I never said it was a complete bucket, I just used wire to hold the lose bits behind it.
And yea, I didn't have the turn signals tightened down yet so the one is facing down. XD

Harley Dyna pipes would be the way to go. Cheap and nice. Should cost $30 a set.

ok pipes ordered and shipped YAY! i got it out and rode a bit today since it broke 40 degrees and the sun was finally out lol....it is a pain to start after it has set for a few hours, is there something easy to maybe fix that or are they just a pain when cold? and i noticed after riding it when i got back and set it on the kickstand in neutral when the bike leaned it sputtered for a second then picked back up, there is plenty of fuel in the tank and the engine has been cleaned out and what not so not sure what coulda caused that, unless maybe it just shook enough to do it.

mine always takes a little negotiation to get to spin up to 1500+ in first second or two under 50 degrees, but for the last few days (it's been 45+ since Thursday in the Milwaukee area) I haven't needed the choke at all to get the bike up and running and it idles great right at about 1k.
If you're having rough starts at 45+ I'd pull the carbs apart and just spray cleaner through every crook and cranny. When I was working on the CBR600F1 that was in my garage last year, just cleaning the carbs and throwing slightly larger jets in it (completely stock and made no mixture screw changes) the bike ran phenomenally better.

ok so just got my universal mounts today.... removed the front faring, and ran into an extra like 3 ft of wire.... now as far as gettin rid of that and splicing the wires i can do that part but whats scarin me from it is the fact that there are 3 fuses on one ofshoot of the wire that arent connected to anything, is it safe to take those off? if so i can knock a huge chunk off...... my other problem is i dont have enough room in my bucket for all the other wires, is there some way to hide/ cover them and make it look good?
figured would add in to that i have the actual manual with the wiring diagram in it....yeah i was totally confused lookin at that lol so i didnt figure anythign out

ok so disregard my last post :) i followed the wires and put 2n2 together and managed to find where the headlight should go and the turn signals so i managed to knock off a ton of wires lol and it looks alot prettier
still wonderin though if there is some way to protect the leftover wires though... they still were to much to fit in the bucket and there isnt alot of room to play with as whoever wired em before has em all spiderwebbed together lol.

There's a metal box that is suppose to go behind the headlight that holds the wires. I know David in Wisconsin had one last week.

Hi there, my GL was a barn-find, had a lot of problems with the fueling! After doin a bit a work cleaned out the carbs, put bigger jets in and pod filters. Still problems!!!!! Only thing it could be was the tap/tank! Make sure you give the tank a damn good cleaning inside n take the tap apart/ check the reservoir filter!?! Hope thats some help. Good luck!

Ok so it looks like your bucket is to shallow. Especially if the headlight plug cant fit in the bucket. On some of the fairing bike I have seen a black plastic bag/pouch that holds the wires behind the headlight. Maybe you should try that route.

will it hurt the wires not being in something? if not then im not to worried about it since we got them pretty well hidden by strapping them to the frame, the two stickin out the bottom there are for the horn when i get it mounted where i want it.
