T-Minus 1 Week - Here's the Route!
Reply Quote
Hey Everyone,

On March 14th, I fly to L.A. and pick up the 1983 GL650 I recently bought on Ebay. Here is the final route I've decided on, and I doubt it will change, as I have checked the 10 day weather forecast for the alternate (more northerly) routes, and they are TOO COLD! I don't mind the cold, but I cannot tolerate riding on two wheels through ice and snow! :-)
DAY 1 - March 14th. Fontana, CA to Henderson, NV (near Las Vegas--free lodging at step-brother's place). 228 miles.
DAY 2 - March 15th. Henderson, NV to Willcox, AZ. Motel 6 for $32.39. 493 miles.
DAY 3 - March 16th. Willcox, AZ to Fort Stockton, TX. Motel 6 again. 475 miles.
DAY 4 - March 17th. Fort Stockton to Austin, TX. Stay with family. 379 miles. Shorter day to allow possible minor maintenance time.
DAY 5 - March 18th. Austin, TX to Gulfport, MS. Motel 6. Did you know Motel 6 got its name from the fact that it used to be $6 a night? Yup.
565 miles.
DAY 6 - March 19th. Gulfport, MS to Spartanburg, SC. Motel 6. 577 miles.
DAY 7 - March 20th. Spartanburg, SC to Camden, DE.
MOM'S! 559 miles.
DAY 8 - Fly out of Atlantic City, NJ to Halifax, NS.

I will return in mid-June to take the bike the rest of the way to Nova Scotia--March just isn't the right season for it up here!

If any of you are along the route you see above--mostly I-10 (except for the diversion to Vegas) and then I-65 to I-85 to I-95--and want me to wave as I go by, let me know! Let's hope it's as uneventful as last year's trip from New Mexico to Nova Scotia.

Good luck Dan. I hope your trip will go well with good weather all the way. If I were closer to I-95 I'd come and ride a little  with you but alas. On your next trip, come up I-81 through Virginia. Have fun and be safe.

Thanks for the well wishes, David.

If you are in Luray, I DEFINITELY want to do that someday! If for some reason I have to leave the bike somewhere mid-country (which I am prepared for), I'll be going back in June to bring it the rest of the way...then I could take I-81. Sure wish I had more time, because I would really enjoy so many of the possible backroads on this trip.

Right now, I'm listening to the Saturday Night Blues show on CBC, and it is certainly psyching me up to get on the road!

Thanks for the link, SB. I had planned on printing off the stator check guide posted on the UK site, but I'll also check the link you provided.

I have also decided to break down (bad choice of words, I know) and buy an iPod Touch, as I will be able to check e-mail, surf the CX/GL forum, etc., anywhere I can pick up an unsecured wireless signal. The 8GB version is less than $200 here in Canada now, and I think this cheaper version is adequate for my needs. A GREAT tool for traveling light on a bike! (I was finally convinced when my 7-year-old neice showed me how easy it is to use one and what all it does!)

P.S. How have you managed to have over 3,500 posts in a little over a year?!
Also, I enjoyed a wonderful 6 months in Barcelona on a job exchange. What an amazing experience!

Sounds like a great trip, good luck with the chilly part at the end.
I assume you'll have your binder of paperwork ready for the export/import process, have a printout of the Ebay listing ready to show to CDN customs when they ask how much tax you'd like to pay.

So how are you handling the licensing? Will you have to get a USA licence plate for it, then retitle it in Canada? What arrangements did you make with your insurer?

Dan,

I didn't realize until this posting that you weren't going all the way home with it. Smart thinking on your part.

Hey Doug,

I'm only taking the bike as far as Delaware next week; I'll fly down in June and bring it the rest of the way. Yes, I'll have my documents together--this will be the third bike I've imported in the last year.

As for licensing, I move the bike across the U.S. on a California temporary/in-transit permit. I think I'll even have that when I cross the border in June, though this time may be a little different as those are usually good for 30 days and more time than that will have passed by the time I get to the border. But I'm sure I'll find a way to get around it.

Nova Scotia doesn't issue registration until I walk in with my completed import forms obtained at the border.

Insurance is the easiest part--I just call my insurance company and tell them I've bought a bike and will be bringing it back. Some states (N.Y. comes to mind) are REALLY fussy about providing proof of insurance and even require that they receive a fax at the motor vehicle office sent directly from the insurance company.

Ciao,

Dan

Dave,

Yeah, I never had any intention of coming all the way to Nova Scotia in March...but the funny thing is, we have been having some incredibly mild weather the last few days and I am now almost thinking....no, no way, it will get cold and snowy here again, I'm sure!

The transport tag what did you have to do to get that? Do you have to go in person to get it or is something that can be done on line or the mail? I just read in one of my motorcycle magazines of a guy who did the samething with a BMW from texas. Sounds like a great adventue. Post if you can while enroute. Im really interested in hearing about your triumphs and tribulations on the trip.

Hey JW,

I don't know much about the in-transit permit this time, but the seller tells me he already has it and has done this before for people he has sold vehicles to, so I am going a little bit out on a limb in trusting him, I suppose. My experience has been, though, that there is always a way to get the temp. permit, one just has to find out what the requiremements are.

I DO hope it will be a great adventure (my trip from New Mexico to Nova Scotia last year was AWESOME; you can read about it here: [ url ] http://choppercharles.com/cs/forums/120196/ShowPost.aspx [ \url ]

I also hope to buy an iPod Touch tomorrow or Saturday and take that with me to stay in touch (excuse the pun).

And to any "webxperts" out there who are reading this, maybe you can tell me how to show URL's--I thought I had it right, but it isn't displaying it as a link.

Long range weather is it will be fairly nice in the northeast until about the 24th. Then we could get a little "onion" snow 25th or 26th.
The last of the snow in my yard disappeared today thanks to 44 degrees and rain. Next week 15th through 19th looks like daytime higns 60 degrees or above with lows in the mid 30s. This is for Pennsylvania. A cold air mass will be hanging around the northern border and we could get a little of that spreading south from time to time. It is severe weather season just starting in the southern states so watch your mirrors for funnel shaped clouds. Have a good trip.
