Oil light goes on when I changed the brake light bulbs.

Ok, I looked at the schematics, I used my very old electrical engineering skills, and I don't get why the oil light goes on when I changed the tail lights to LED's. I get why the signal lights do that with the relay, but the tail light and the oil pressure light. Can someone explain this to me?

I put the old bulbs back in and the oil light goes off. I thought it was very strange as well. I'm going to switch it back just to make sure, but it was the only thing that changed. I'm slowly change as many of the bulbs to leds to prep the bike so that I can hook up other electrical gear. I figure I can get back about 20 - 30 watts to use for other stuff, such as GPS or radio.

I believe your 79 incorporated a sensor to operate the oil light if the
brake light was burned out. It is a little black box on the rear fender
under the seat. The LED's are not drawing enough current to tell this
box that everything is OK. Does the oil light only come on when the
brake lever is pulled? That is what was supposed to happen. Honda only
used this for one year I believe.
How to defeat this? I'm not sure, you may just try unplugging the box
and see what happens.

Fox is 100% correct, but I believe this feature was on several Honda models other than the CX. I seem to recall they used something like it on the early VT shadows (84-87), but they called it a "stop/tail light sensor". I think it shows up on the 79 CX wiring diagram, but I don't have one handy to verify.

There is a wiring diagram that shows this in this post, in the diagram there are some notes in the upper left corner, #5 shows the stop warning unit.

The problem is you are replacing a incandescent lamp with a LED lamp. The incandescent lamp has a resisitive load to it,thus drawing a certain amount of current. The Led lamp has almost next to nothing for a resistive load, thus drawing an extremely small amount of current and oil lamp illuminates. System thinks taillight has burned out,and illuminates Oil light .If you want to use your LED lamps ,you have to wire a resistor in series with the LED,s. Its a simple chore. This is what you need :

You could just unplug the stop relay. I did about a yaer ago. It,s under the seat.

Well, I think it's odd that honda would use the oil light as a light out indicator. You see the oil light come on you think oil problem not light problem. As for the resistor, I think you just need one big enough to get the light to turn out, but 8 watts is quite a bit to dissipate under the seat, where it can get quite warm.

wayne, I'm looking at the schematic, I can't seem to find that relay. Which one is it?

Then again...It helps if you look at the schematic of the year of your bike.

It"s small about 1x3/4. Its right by plugs for cid and alt.

There is a little square relay underneath the seat...it trips the oil light if the brake signal is not working. Check all the wires to make sure they are connected securely...check the wires behind the brake light to make sure nothing came loose.

Exactly. If there wasn't sufficient current draw from the stop lamp(s) the oil light comes one.
You can fool this feature by adding a resistor in parallel with lower wattage bulbs (such as LED) but it'll never work again - then again does it need to if you switched to an LED lamp?

I think this post shows exactly why I love this forum! What a great question and answers and solutions/workarounds!
IMHO - just unplug the sensor.
If you add a resistor it will use up the watts you were trying to save. so you'd need an`electronic replacement (like the led flasher unit you may have already fitted?). I guess these are sensitive to power usage (current flow) rather than voltage?
BTW _ I was thinking along the same lines for my 1981 cx500c. Save some power to make the stator last longer and/or run some
extra lights.... then I realized the indicators aren't 'on' long enough to make any difference compared to headlight or taillights. I did fit pair of duel LED tail/stop lights though and that's as far as i got until i figure out how to put LEDs in the sealed headlight!
btw again = on my old austin mini, if the tail lights stopped working the entire instrument panel went out! Great for police - they could catch you broken taillights AND speeding at the same time )how do i know that?)

Just wanted to let everyone know, I unplugged the circuit that detects the bulb outage. It's easy and if I really want it, I just plug it in. The idiot lights seem to function as they should. Thank you everyone for your help.
