was in a barn!

I have had this 1978 cx500 i got out of a barn 7 years ago in my shed. never messed with it, and figured yesterday after putting away the snowmobiles, that I should pull this betty out of the shed and see if it would start! I had some of the neighborhood kids oohhing and ahhhing over it, and we put some gas in it and hooked up a marine battery to it and it started and idled! unbelievable! So now I got this cool bike with no title in wi, and am itching to get her on the road. Any tips on good tires to put on her?

Wow, that's pretty nice for a barn find. The first place to start is here. There's lots of great info on everything, including tires. Which, by the way, Bridgestone S11s are highly recommended.

If you have not already done so, put an inline fuel filter between the petcock and the carbs. The gas tank has got to have some gunk in it and if you catch it before it gets to the carbs, you might be able to ride it without tearing into them right away. A cheap small engine filter works great.

Oh, and of course, change the oil and antifreeze (silica-free only--not the green stuff) along with plugs, adjust the cam chain and valves. All of that is WAY easy too.

Post some pics of your ride!

What would we ever do without barns? Somewhere, hidden under a pigeon dropping covered, dusty dropcloth in the corner of a desolate, decaying outbuilding is no doubt a 1969 Hugger Orange SS Camaro with 2500 or so miles. Good find indeed!

So how about the title thing? I emailed a guy from michigan on here joel I think and he said he could get me a title, write him a bill of sale and send him vin numbers and such, and he will sell the bike back to me, and I can go get a title. do you all think this would work? Any other ideas? I threw the bike on craigslist for 800.00 just to see if anyone would bite, but I really want to cruise this big old thing!

Hmm,

Just a silly ol thought, either you want to sell the bike or ride it. What I would do is fix up the bike (which sounds very minor), and ride the bike. Either you will love it to death, or want to keep it. Pretty simple.

Welcome.
RE: the title. I suggest you take a trip down to the county clerk or city hall and ask what the procedure is. It probably isn't all that difficult. They might just need to check to see that it isn't stolen and then hand you the paperwork to fill out.

Get it road worthy by May and come on over across the river to our spring ride!

It's possible your carb float on that side is sticking. Take a light plastig hammer and tap the float chamber a few times to see if it stops leaking.

The Chippewa Falls area has some of the best riding anywhere. Fix it up and ride it! if you get bored with it (you won't) then sell it  Better yet, fix it up and come to the 3rd annual Twin Cities Spring Ride.

I suspect you got some tank residue in your carbs. It will probably get worse until you clean them.

I believe in wisconsin it's easy to title a bike that has been off the road for a lot of years or past a certain build date. Go to the county clerk, DMV, SOS or whatever they call it and see what they have to say.

How many miles does the bike have on it?

Drain the old gas, run new gas with seafoam in it and see if things get better. Otherwise the carbs need to come off as it possibly looks like jelly in the bowls.

Nope. I'm a michigan resident so I do all my dirty work in michigan. A lot faster and easier for many things.
