Did you try to pull a dent out with a magna spot without removing gas fumes?

If so I want to see pictures because I didn't save the ones of the last guy who blew up a tank.

yeah well heres what happened. i spent 6 hours at work grinding off the 5 layers of paint on the tank. there were 2 gnarly dents on the right side that i wanted to pull out with a dent puller before i repainted. a guy i work with told me that he had luck pushing a dent out from the back with air pressure. he heated the dent with a oxy torch. there was still fumes in the tank and they ignited, shot a 5 foot flame out the fill hole. he then let the smoke clear and shot 150 psi of shop air into the tank... then i got a call saying i should come out and take a look.

Well that sucks.

Looked at the pics, that tank is toast. Love the way they expand but don't seem to rupture . I contribute this to good design practices.

I noted the tank looked stripped of paint. Losing the tank after this incident makes it double painfull.

So, whats the plan now? Another stock tank? or another type?

That's great. Looks exactly like what happened to the last guy. Next time remember stripper and to remove the fumes. I almost want one but I'm not willing to blow up one of my tanks.

Not to kick you but I started a post in the customize section because I can upload pictures there and they won't disappear. Hopefully good tips will be posted there to keep this from happening again.

the best advice i can give on this is to NEVER let anyone come near a freshly drained and cleaned gas tank with a oxy torch and an air chuck. use hammers, use the proper tools.

Not sure. Not may tanks have been posted to fit the gl.

I would be almost curious if the goldwing plastic tank would fit. It has a shell cover that goes over it.
Are you going for the stock look or a heavily modded bike.

You might take a look at the 1980's and 90's NightHawk tanks.  They seem to be very similar, with the same front and rear mounting styles, and the side cover "mate & mount".

Just so you don't feel like the only one.

The pictures are gone but the statements is the same. Maybe if I find a really rusty one I'll blow it up.
I know what I would do if it was my tank. I would give it a good scuffing and spray a clearcoat on it so it wouldn't rust. I'd probably mount it on my living room wall. Wouldn't that piss melody off.

I have a painted one sitting in a stand in the living room and another in the corner near the easel waiting for a decorative paint job from Melody. She wanted to give it a try. Got the damn thing powder coated black just to learn there were pinholes in it.

Are you going to try and keep her stock?

I ask because you have an 81 GL; they didn't make alot of them. The highest 81 serial prduction number I have seen is 004610. For the 82 model year, the highest GL serial production number I have seen is 112743.

Does anyone have a higher 81 GL serial production number?

my serial number is 002204. so its older. i wish i could find the actual build date cuz i have a theory. i bought this bike because it was an 81 that i am pretty sure was made in 1980. the year i was born. so this bike is literally as old as i am.

i have no interest in keeping this bike stock. i have the entire electrical system pulled loose and am going to fab a cubby to hide it all. the bars are not stock. i am relocating the battery box between the frame in front of the rear tire ( effectively turning it 90 degrees inward). i don't really want a stock tank but it all breaks down to what fits. when i'm done (if i'm ever done) this bike shouild look pretty sweet.
