Engine Turns But No Spark
Reply Quote
I replaced the stator about 6,000 miles ago with an Electrex unit, and I added an Electrex Regulator/Rectifier at the same time.  It was running strong one day, and the next morning the engine turned but no spark. I installed a new Honda CDI unit; still no spark. A friend and I got out our multimeters and did some testing as outlined in the Honda Factory Shop Manual.

This is what we got:

White to Blue - Honda specs 77 to 95 Ohms, we got 5 Ohms

Green to White - 387 to 473, we got 85

Orange to Green - 95 to 116, we got 112

Light Blue to Green - 95 to 116, we got 109

Orange/Red to Green - 81 to 99, we got 93

Light Blue/Red to Green - 81 to 99, we got 91

The last four readings are good, the first two are not even close to Honda specs. I have the old Honda stator that I will be sending to Custom Rewinding in Birmingham for rebuilding; if not to use it now, then to have it as a spare to use later.

The Advance Pulsar readings:

Orange/White to Green - 185 to 225 Ohms, we got 204

Light Blue/White to Green - 185 to 225 Ohms, we got 214

That's within spec.

What do you think is my problem?

Snagged from the rob davis site.

Set your multimeter to read a range between 60 and 250 volts AC, and put the positive pin of the multimeter on the spade connector of the white wire circuit and the negative pin of the multimeter to any convenient earth point, perhaps the engine or even the negative terminal on the battery.

Spin the engine on the starter motor and watch the reading on the multimeter. On the white or low current wire, you should get a reading of about 90 volts AC. Remember that the battery must be fully charged.

Now swap the positive lead from the multimeter to the blue, high current wire; leave the other terminal from the multimeter on the earthing point. Turn the engine again on the starter motor. The reading should be about 100 volts AC.

REMEMBER : White Wire about 90 volts : Blue wire about 100 volts, AC. ("Whitey ninety, bluey highey")

If either reading is below par, it means that particular circuit has failed or is failing. If the stator is on the way out, the voltage reading will drop as the engine revs higher. This is because cracked insulation on the stator, or simply old age, is causing the electrical power to "leak".

So, how low is low? If the white is less than 70 volts or the blue is less than 90, your stator is tired. Some readers have commented that their bikes run well with as little as 60 volts output on white, but this does show that the stator is definitely living on borrowed time. If the engine is due to come out anyway - change the stator.

You know if you get a bad reading on blue and white that's not good. That means the high and low speed windings and not happy. That's what gives the cdi juice to run the bike. But if the stator is now I would almost see if there's a last minute spot on the ignitech group buy before it closes because the ignitech is powered off the battery and that leaves the charging winding to power the battery as long as it doesn't go bad either.

I'm already on the Ignitech group. The morning the bike didn't start is when I joined the Ignitech group, and I actually Paypaled my money over last night. Exactly how much bad language can we use on this forum? Without using obscene language let me just say this; I am not happy that the new stator lasted only 6,000 miles. I'm sending the old stator to Custom Rewinding for a rebuild. While I am waiting for the Ignitech to arrive, I will pull the engine and replace the stator, because if one part has failed, them I have to assume another part of the stator will also fail soon.

I think Electrex was the model that was getting bad reviews last year or the year before causing failures but I cant be sure.
