Glueing nuts to fairing
Reply Quote
I want to glue the nuts that are used to retain the mirrors and windshield to the fairing and wanted to check what others have done.

There are the strange looking ones which are rounded with a flat part and go on the inside of the fairing.

I'm thinking to use epoxy but not sure if it will stick to the fairing plastic.

I have a Cycle Sound unit which covers all but the outermost nuts, making it a pain when I need to tighten the screws.

So you want to glue the nuts on so you can tighten when ever you want?

Why not lock nuts? Then they won't get loose.

The nuts he is referring to are not accessible to put a wrench on them. Locking nuts would not work.

Greg, If your having a hard time getting the nuts to sit still maybe a bit of double sided tape would be a better idea than epoxy.
If the threads are bad run a tap through them first so they thread in easier. I'm not sure why you would want them to be glued in.

If your going to do something, do it right, don't do it half as@*d.

I want to be able to remove the screws completely, such as if I need to replace a mirror and have the nuts remain in place. One needs to hold the nuts in place when removing or tightening the screws.

It's not a metter of them coming loose or not being able to tighten, I want to simulate a "blind" hold on the backside of the fairing so I can remove the screws from the front.

How about a blind nut or nut riveter. I use to use them to put mirrors on vehicles and other things.

They sell them at Menards.

I have glued the center one down on a Goldwing fairing.  Same fairing I believe.  The end ones that hold the mirrors I could access with a curved hemostat or a magnetic pickeruper.  But that center one is behind the radio enclosure.  I think I used Super glue, and I haven't tried to remove it yet.  You have to be careful to get things lined up just right, and not glue the bolt into the nut either.  A hard torquing will probably pop the glue loose too.

Put a gob of silicone in the recess in the fairing where the nut normally sits and  install the windshield as you would normally. Make sure the silicone oozes up around the sides of the nut and wipe off the excess. Not only will it keep the nuts in place, but it will keep water and dirt out of the holes so that the nuts don't corrode.
