Hello all. I'm a newbie to this site, as well as my recently bought a cx500 (well... almost a year ago - but have not touched it yet), and in motorcycles in general. I read this forum often just to get ideas on what I'm wanting to do with it.
Anyway - I have one major question - I can't find anywhere on how to identify the difference between the Custom and the Deluxe models (besides the side panels). How can you tell the difference?
Thanks guys (and/or gals). I'm happy to finally jump in the water here.

There are many ways to tell the difference. The shape of the tank, the shape of the side covers, the tail light, the seat...
The rear fender/taillight assembly on a deluxe is plastic, custom is chrome, the tank on a custom is teardrop shaped, it's more square looking on a deluxe...The best way to tell is to look at the vin tag behind the headlight on the frame...A Custom will say cx500c and i assume a deluxe would say either cx500 or cx500d...

Thanks. My dumbass didn't even look at the vin tag. I've got a custom. I only ask because "Frankenbike" is exactly what it is - yahamaha light... the list goes on... I won't even bother.
Thanks again.

Thanks to you both.
I will have pics up shortly and the proper signature to my profile soon. I have been wanting to join the group for almost a year now. Up until now, I've just been standing back and watching. As well as deciding what all I was about to do myself with this bike (it was a birthday present from my girlfriend who is an experienced crotch rocket rider-beginner racer).
She's been wanting to get me involved in motorcycles, but knows I've got no interest in crotch rockets, so she used the approach of a project (smart girl since she knows my love I have for my 69 VW Beattle "Betsy" I had already rebuilt). Also... she hates my new project - 68 Jeep CJ5 (she thinks is too "redneck").
So she bought me a 1980 cx500 custom. Drives great actually. A few problems so far - seized choke cable, snapped throttle cable (I've already replaced), leaking forks, leak in what I would call the rear seal (the joint towards the rear of the crankshaft between the dipstick and gear shift), another leak on the front face the transmission coming down from somewhere, pin hole in the radiator, tires like plastic and some minor cosmetics. Oh and who knows when a tune-up was done. Or even an oil change.
But its a good one... drives really good considering. I like it. It'll be fun. I'm sure I'll lean on you all for support and advice where I need it. And I'll get pics up when I get a chance.

Welcome, Mate.
The CX is just what you needed. Especially the Custom, easy to ride, easy to maintain, easy on the wallet for Gas/Fuel. Had my share of crotch rockets, but, my 2nd bike was a black CX shadow, and after 25 years, I've bought another.
.....I do miss my GPz.
If you're still in control...You're not going fast enough.

Welcome to the forum.
When you get a chance, if you are interested, you can set up your profile with your bike info and location. Its as easy as clicking on the "settings" at the
upper right and then on the "profile" tab. Fill in the location field
with your location, and then put your bike info (year and model) in the signature field.

WOW!!!
Thanks again to you all. I plan to learn much while I move into this project.
I will definitely soon do the profile stuff. Thanks for the directions. I just got back home (I was out of town 4 days for military stuff). I have my anniversary today with my girlfriend, so I'll get on that stuff sometime this week. It'll be my last anniversary if I spend time messing around here
Thanks again for the warm welcome. You all will hear more from me as I get into this thing.
