that's what I thought... it looked like it would come off without and issue... It gives me hell when it gets hot, plus it's a bit weak in the morning. I know the battery is good, so I wanna go through the starter to make it better.

Without looking at the manual, IIRC there are two bolts holding it on, remove bolts, grab the starter and pull it backwards out of the hole. http://drop.io/CX500_GL500?page=4

That's it Abes. Two bolts and it pulls straight back. It takes some effort to pull it out though. You'll need to pry it back with a large screwdriver. The o ring is a tight fit. then take the wire off. When putting it back in, put the wire back on first then grease up the o ring, pry it back in and put back the two bolts.
When you take it apart to clean it out and grease it look carefully at how the gear goes on the end and watch for shims at each end of the armature. they need to go back exactly the way they came out.

Ditto on the screwdriver. I have had some that come right out like they don't want to be in there and ones that it seems like they were welded in.

Hi, be aware that the battery earth lead is fixed between the starter motor and the bracket on Prolink models at the top bolt,so just make sure it goes back into that position during reassembly. Secondly, observe the starter motor`s main power connection post when you undo the 10mm nut - you do not want it to start spinning or you`ll risk damage inside the motor like this;

If in doubt use a spanner on the lower nut also;
