Water Pump Impeller Washers

Is there a washer in front of and behind the water pump impeller? I looked at the parts diagram and it shows the 2 washers. I only have the front washer on mine and it keeps working loose.

Sometimes the washer behind the impeller can be on the camshaft but be very hard to see,, or be inside the impeller.. Check this page at the Rob Davis website, http://www.elsham.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/cx500/mechanical_seal/ The washer is on the end of the camshaft in the first pic.

Yes, check for the washer on the cam shaft or in the impeller. The first time I pulled mine, it stayed on the cam shaft, and I almost added the new one on top of it. The second time, it stayed with the impeller, and I couldn't figure out why it would not come off the cam shaft.
Also, the copper, outer, washer should be replaced (or heated with a propane torch) every time it's removed. It IS the seal between the impeller and cam shaft.

I put a dab of high-temp silicone sealant under the copper washer on my GL500. It isn't sticky so it won't impede any future disassembly

I had one in front and none in rear. Maybe that's why I'm getting water in the oil. I replaced mechanical seal, oil seal, head gaskets and it's still getting in.
I have it disassembled right now should I get new washers or use the old 10mm? I also have pitting on the whole camshaft end.

The one underneath the impeller is a 10 mm special thrust washer an as stated sometimes with age looks as if it's part of the cam shaft,
It's been painted red in this picture to show it.

Only ever have the ONE on there. The washer on the impeller nut side is a copper,"Crush" washer. If in good condition it can be re-annealed by heating to cherry red and natural cooling.

you need to be Real sure of the "none in rear" - end up with two and the impeller will bind on the pump cover - no washer and the impeller will bind on the rear cover.
Some pitting is normal. The area that the oil seal rides on needs to be smooth, and usually will be.
Water in oil - make sure you replace the two water passage o-rings (on the case - to - rear cover seam). A good source of water in oil and not the oil seal's fault.

This would cause water to leak from the weep hole but it should not get into the oil,,,unless the weep hole is plugged up.

It looks like it was rubbing in rear. I ordered all new washers seals and o-rings to put it back together. And hope for the best
