Reminiscent of earlyy 80's DOHC engines, Honda's 2010 CB1100 looks like a flash-back to a better era.  I wonder if they've decided to revisit our bikes too?

I am having trouble finding it on the official Honda America website among the 2010 models.  Perhaps this was from an old article based on a concept bike from somewhere like the Tokyo show that didn't actually go to production?

According to this article the bike was going on sale in Japan last fall.  But no word if it was going to get to North America.

I like it! That's what a jap bike is suppose to look like. Don't have a clue why they thought they had to copy Harley's engine design.

The link shows a CB750 too. Love it. Clicking on the picture and the literal japanese translation says something about it sounds drunk. I think that sums it up well...?.

I was just reading an article about how the Jap bike companies aren't doing all that well and Suzuki isn't even importing many or any new 2010 models, so Honda might be doing the same. Every major motor company was down at least 25%.

Many of the Japanese bikes saw prices increases for this model year too, so I am sure that isn't helping things any either.  Used, late model, Japanese motorcycle sales seem to be benefiting though as a result.

Honda has been showing incarnations of that bike for at least 5 years at the moto shows.  Only real change that's noticeable from previous versions is the much shorter rake and better proportions.  Maybe I'm old, but REALLY like sitting up in the saddle, especially in intense city traffic.
Wonder what it'll cost if it makes it to these shores?

You guys are two wrapped in the money, Have you ever figgured out what a new Silverwing like a GL650 would be adjusted for inflation. I mean I like a cheap bike as much as any other guy but those are going to be comming from Taiwan or China now. However now that I've said that, don't jump all over me now, some of you guys are a little quick on the trigger, Is it me or does BMW have an absolutly kick ass sport bike for 13 grand. I can't really afford a R1200 Adventure.  Actually I really cant afford anything. My wife can, but she spends my money first thats how she has money left over and I don't.

I know that BMW has transfered all of its component manufacturing for the 650s and some 800s to china and the bikes are only assembled in Germany.

It's just when you look at the prices compared to a Car, which has way way way way way more components and complexity, they are about the same.  It may also have to do with the fact up here a MC is definitely a seasonal indulgence, it can be difficult to justify the price for a 4 month a year hobby.  A problem you don't have in South FLA.

a naked reborn UJM should be around $8k, and it would sell like hotcakes.

Boulevard s50 (800cc) msrp's for $7199.00

Vstrom 650 is $6600.

My biggest problem is pretty much all bikes in the $6-9 price range are outside my tastes.  Harley Wannabe's, Max-Max warriors, or crotch rocket poseurs.

Really, I love my V-Strom 1000, and while it does have a Fairing it is a very standard seating position. In fact I like it so much that I am going to buy a used 650 copy as well. The big V is a little to much to ride off road. and the 650 is probibly the most balanced motorcycle made, with the possible exception of the NT700. I think one of the reasons that they won't ever make a CX again is the complexity of manufacturing. Honda already has an engine type that fits many models and was born around the time that the last of the CXes were being made. I have had a VT500 Ascot which was liquid cooled and had shaft drive, I also had a 700 Shadow, and a 800 Pacific coast, all of which had the same basic engine design. It's smooth, powerful for it's displacement and reliable as a brick door stop. That's why they still use it. I mean look at all the motorcycle models that they used this engine configuration in. All the shadows, the afore mentioned bikes, the honda hawk, the transalp, and a host of bikes that we probibly don't get here. Why on earth would they make a new CX? That's just my opinion and you know what they say;  opinions are just like a**holes, everyone has one and they all stink.

A

Oh about compairing prices of a motorcycle to a car, If you want a car, just get one. You can buy a Nissan versa sedan for 9999.00. Brand new off the lot. Sure I could buy the NT700 for the same money, but I already have a car and the NT700 is a bit up the lux scale than the Nissan. I mean lets compare oranges to oranges. The proper bike to compare a base model car to is a base model bike. A gs500 or the GU250. somthing like that that costs between 3 and 4 thousand bucks. Take the price of a new bike and double it and that is the price of the car that you need to compare it to. A GL1800 at 24Gs How about a Lexus at 50Gs. I don't know if this formula works for all bike and car comparos but that's what I use.

I'd like Honda to do well, but I just don't see it. When the new 700 cost $10,000, what's the incentive to buy that over a Kawi Versys or Vstrom, both of which cost thousands less.

I think your "situation" like anything determines what you spend on a bike.

For me since I work from home a bike is absolutely a "toy" and a "hobby", don't need it....is just for fun.

On the other hand a car we absolutely HAVE TO HAVE as do most people so hey it's getting the money first...if both need work then I'm fixing the Suburban (cuz we have lots of kids) then the car and the bike will be last.

Now on the other hand if I had a long commute down the highway to work then I COULD justify spending more on a bike because for half the year it would save money on gas and maybe mostly pay for itself cuz I'm NOT putting the gas in the car that I would normally have to.

I really couldn't ever see me spending more than $5000 on a NICE bike and for sure never ever will I buy a brand new one as I'll never buy a brand new car either....is one of the stupidist financial moves you can make. I'll also never buy a car or a bike from a dealer, only individuals.

Instead of adjusting for inflation, I'll do an apple/apple comparison.  When I bought my bike off the showroom floor, it cost me $1700 with fairing, fogs and gloves.  As a Po High School student, I had to put in 74 work days (8 hours a day) to pay the bike off (no interest calculated to keep it simple.)  To buy a bike today for $12k, working the same job (minimum wage), you'd have to work 207 eight hour days to pay for it.

Using their other models as yardsticks, if Honda were to offer a contemporary CX today, a conservative price would probably be $9000 for a stripped bike, that equates to 155 work days.

To throw a monkey wrench in the works, I had a friend who imported a Honda superbike around the same time, it cost him over $25000 1978 dollars at the time, you could buy a modern rice rocket off the showroom floor that would smoke that bike today for around $14k.

How do you figure 12K?

A rebel which is way to small is $3,200.
And base price for a Honda phantom is $8,000. and that's 745 cc.

Did it with a cx500 last year in this thread

 wildmanwill wrote:

Ok, so the list price in 1979 was $2498

I put this into the inflation calculator  and got the following results:

What cost $2498 in 1979 would cost $7315.73 in 2008.

So I guess this means if they still made the CX's they would sell for around 7,400?

That's what Abes quoted the price in Canada of the variant of the bike this thread is about.

7400, that's about right for a liquid cooled V-twin with shaft drive. I think that a Shadow 500 sould be right around there as well. The 650 V-Strom is in that ballpark as is the Versys, but no shaft drive. I like that calculator.

Well, the calculator didn't work so much for a few 'known' things. I suppose it's geared towards US economy more than Canadian. I had used two things One, the price of my CX custom I bought from the dealer in 1982 brand new $2400 Cdn. came out to about $5265 now.... I figure that's kinda low. Then, I also used the house my folks bought in the 60's for $14,000 - they had sold it in '79 for about $76,000 The calculator said at todays (2009) price, it would be about $99,295 - er no way, it's probably more like $300,000 - $500,000. (geeze I wish we still had that in the family!)

I think the weakness of the calculator is that it is averaging the value of the dollar. And as much as some things have gotten more expensive, a lot of things have gotten relatively cheaper, especially most of the technology in our homes. Also, since it is using an average, it's probably basing the value on the financial world, not necessarily the real world. Some things inflate more than other things. My dad and I had a conversation once where he was questioning why I never seem to have money. When he was my age he was raising a family and owning a house, and making double minimum wage. I make double minimum wage now and can barely survive on my own. What people are paid has not gone up as much as what it costs to live. Also, let's not forget that a bike is a luxury item, and the models available today were designed before the "recession" that we are in now, so they weren't made to be cheap. Hondas 30 years ago had to be cheap, or they wouldn't sell any. Maybe the cure for expensive Hondas is to not buy them.
