Wanted: 81 GL500 Rear Plastic Cover
|
|

Hi All,
Before I get started repainting my cycle, I have a minor issue with the small top cover between the tail light and the rear seat. Mine has about a 1 inch long crack in it. I could reinforce it, fill it, sand it and seal it prior to painting, but thought I would ask here if someone has one in solid condition that they might want to part with.
Thanks.

SiriusBlackOp,
Keep the bike up to shape. There were only a few thousand 81 GL's made Interstate model or naked. In fact the production numbers are closer to the 82 Turbo bike numbers (few thousand) vs. the number of 82 GL models.

Really??? I had no idea there were that few of them. With the help of the folks and info here I was able to bring this one back from an 8 year decay in some guys old garage. Thing didn't run, had broken brakes, torn seats, broken parts all over the place. But it only had 17,000 miles on it, so I purchased it for $300. Added a good $1000+ in parts since then and put 1,800 miles on it last summer. Just have to get this thing painted so it looks closer to what it is! ;)
Even if they are not that rare, its okay... it's still a nice bike.

Sirius, the rear cowl is made of unobtanium. I'd plastifix the one you have and repaint it.
I did one a couple years ago, used body filler on it, turned out quite nice IMO.

"unobtanium"... LOL! That's Awesome!
Looks like you riveted in some aluminum braces. I was toying with a similar idea myself if I were to repair it... minus the rivets and instead maybe some epoxy resin from the under side. That part seems to be in a possition to take some abuse, so I'm not all that surprised that it's not a common thing to have laying around.
So, I guess I'll shore up what I have to work with. Thanks.

Actually I got it that way.
Here's the thread.

Turns out Sidecar Bob used to own this piece!
I would consider "plastifix". It will make it strong as new, without junky rivets.
I think the rarity of this part has much to do with guys putting on trunk extenders, and the rear cowl getting stuck on a shelf for twenty years, forgotten, lost or tossed.
ps. Spanish Bandit, look at me I fingered out the live linkie thingie.

When I fixed the crack in my rear cowl I used fiberglass cloth and resin,
If your not familiar with the technique it's pretty easy.
Lay strips of fiberglass on a sheet of wax paper and pour the resin over top. Fold the wax paper over top and spread the resin around on the cloth until it's impregnated into the cloth.
Then just lay out the strips on the underside of the cowl and use a bondo spreader to get all the air out.
