Hey guys i just replaced my old broken tach with a different one and everything works but the response time is realllly slow
it takes about 10 seconds to come down to idle speed at an intersection and doesnt read 0 rpm until the bikes been off for about 20-25 seconds.
Most of the time during city riding it just stays at 3500 rpm steady.
Any ideas?

Sounds like there is something gummy inside the tach. It works similar to the speedo in that there are two cups that run inside one another. They don't touch, but one is magnetized and it drags the other one along at a set ratio. I'm afraid you are going to have to open it up and clean the bearings and give them a little lube. Very fine machine oil, like clock oil is what I use. There is a hair spring that returns the needle to 0, probably the spring cannot overcome the resistance of the bearing. Or you may find some lube has gotten into where the cups run and that is causing the driven cup not to return.

For once being lazy has paid off.. Today whatever was sticking seems to have come unstuck and its moving normally :)
Thanks for your response though, as im sure it will come back and be more serious the second time around.

I've learned to put up with it although there are solutions. You can carefully infuse a bit of solvent/oil combo such as silicone spray into the back but you have to be careful or you'll mess up the lens and the reading surface.
Tiny bit at a time until you loosen up the old grease.
Being an old bike rider the tach was nice to look at but I always went by sound, so I get by until it warms up and gives me a reading - even then I don't need it.
