Acewell Speedometer Installation
Reply Quote
So I went and spent $170 on a speedo from Acewell.  Here's the documentation of what had to be done (It's pretty easy.)

It arrives with three wires, one for the speedo power and sensors, and each column of indicators has its own harness.  It started with a bunch of big connectors, but there's no way to fit all of them in a headlight bucket.

I cut off the connectors and grafted the indicator wires to the plug that went to the light housing.  (Turn signals, neutral, and high beam indicator.)

The 12V wires have the standard red +12, black ground color code.  I added new wires that follow the Honda convention:

Red = Unswitched +12V
Black = Switched+12V
Green = Ground

I had to splice into the red to the ignition to get unswitched DC for the clock circuit.  I added a mini 3A fuse  (can't find anything smaller.)

So the switched +12 comes from the light connector black wire, ground is to an open green socket, and the red is all set.  They provide magnets and hardware for the wheel sensor.  I made a bracket and hung the sensor off the caliper.  One of the magnets is loose, and it drops right into a hex bolt on the rotor.  I imagine it will stay forever.  It can be pried out if needed.

The temp sensor is a bit more work.  I cleaned out an old one from another bike, and there is almost enough room to slide the new one inside.  I cleaned the threads off of the new one and there is a 1/2" gap to fill in.  I thought about unpotting the sensor from the new housing, but I'd likely destroy it in the process.  I'll make a brass rod to fit into the old sensor, and JB weld the whole thing together to get a good bond.  It will be back a bit from the coolant, but should be close.

More to come...

This will be a good one for me to follow. I am doing same thing on the CX-DualSport conversion using a Trail Tech.  It will be good if you can keep us posted on issues to overcome.
I will also be splicing into stock wiring for dash indicator lights. Trail Tech Dash Board.

Several people on here have set their bikes up with a Vapor.

Here is one of the old threads...

After reading the link I see they used the "Hose Splice" method for a temp sensor. I did like jroe650 did, I installed my sensor in the original cx location.
Except the Vapor sensor was threaded and I was able to drill out the old sensor and thread the inside to match the new sensor - I filled it with temp transmitter grease. this is a trick instrumentation technicians use for sensors in a well where the tip may not be in contact with the actual medium being sensed. Another trick is to fill it with anti-sease. The grease will help transmit the temp really fast.

The back side of Vapor but still sorting out the wiring in this shot:

Ok now that I'm using the Vapor and removing that big ass heavy tachometer I need to get rid of the tach cable too. (that saves another lb. or so) But I didn't want a hole in the motor to collect dirt. time to make a plug to replace the cable in the motor using a small piece of 5/8 aluminum round stock:

Now finished part:

And part installed:

Installing the Vapor its time to hookup the water temperature sensor. Since I had a CR front wheel I ordered the kit for the cr but when I tried to install the water sensor into the cx water hoses I found it was quite a bit smaller than the hoses were.:

Well next option was to just use the sensor (without the piping tee) and put it in the same location as the cx sensor. Easy right? Well again I'm not that lucky. the thread on the stock cx sensor was quite a bit larger than the Trailtech kit sensor.
Original CX sensor:

Ok so maybe I can use a bushing? Removed the sensor and compare it to all my fittings and it is not anything standard (looks like a 3/8 pipe thread but on close inspection it is not) Well I did have a spare that was same as the CX so maybe I can use it as a nipple/bushing for the TrailTech sensor?
Drilling out the large sensor:

Comparing finished product to spare:

And now new sensor installed: (yea that's some glycol residue that dripped out on my motor - :doh:)

Hey, this is looking good. Looks like you have access to some good equipment for modifications - any other projects after this one?

BTW, can you weigh the new set-up and the old speedo/tach? I was curious what weight reduction you were able to achive.

Very well done.

That tach plug is a piece of art.

I'd buy a tach plug or two just to have them ready for later.

I had a similar thought about the temp sensor, but one small advantage of my job is that I get to X-ray stuff all the time.  I took some images of the Acewell sensor to see if I could carve it up without wrecking the wires.

You can see the lead solder and the small sensor in the bottom.  I didn't have a camera available when I cut it up, but there's a bit of RTV holding the snesor in and then they have epoxy on the top half.  Some time on the lathe and I cut the body away and had just the wires out.  Some quick work with a Dremel would do it too.

I carved the epoxy off with a dremel, just enough to fit the sensor and wires into the old Honda sensor body.  A little RTV and some JB weld, and the sensor is just like the original one...

I made a tach plug on the lathe, but forgot the knurling.  A little Form-a-Gasket on the body will keep it from spinning with the drive spur.

The spark sensor wraps around either coil wire, I replaced the yellow wire with a less vibrant black wire.

WIth the harness connected, and everything buttoned up, it works great.

Here's Acewells' schematic:

Jroe650,

very nice, you have to post back after a year/5000mi to let us know how the mod held up.

BTW, what weight savings do you think you realized? 2lb? no laughing, these add up...
