Getting aggrevated with this clutch...
Reply Quote
I'm going to pull it back apart again tonight - even with the new EBC springs, it's still slipping.  The Rotella T I'm using is JASO-MA certified, so that shouldn't be a problem.

I'm thinking of pulling the clutch plates back apart, and scuffing them with some 220 grit sandpaper just to make sure there's no glazing issues - I remember the steel plates having dimples, but being really smooth to the touch.

I'm wondering if scuffing up the friction mating surfaces won't increase the available friction for the plates?

I don't know D.
Clutch slip can be from worn clutch discs. The manual lists Disc A 2.3mm (0,091in) and Disc B 3.1mm (0.122in)
Your springs and oil are good.
Clutch cable O.K.,- i.e.,- not too tight?

Yep, all the discs measure out fine - clutch cable is plenty loose.

Let me ask this, as well - at what point is the clutch arm on the cover when all the slack is out?  Mine sits almost right at 9 o'clock when all the slack is pulled out (as checked by just pushing it with my finger)

Just pulled it all back apart, scrubbed everything clean with soap and water, and lightly hit EVERY friction area with a 120 grit piece of sandpaper.

Here's the measurements of the discs:
(Moving from the front of the clutch assembly towards the rear)

Clutch Disc B1  -  3.52mm thick

Clutch Disc A1 - 2.58mm

Clutch Disk A2 - 2.64mm

Clutch Disk A3 - 2.58mm

Clutch Disk A4 -2.55mm

Clutch Disk A5- 2.59mm

Clutch Disc B2 - 2.72mm (furthest in aka pressure plate disc)

According to my CX500 Service Manual, the service limit on Disc B1 is 3.1mm (I'm @ 3.52) and the A discs are all 2.3mm (and you can see I'm not there on any of them)

I'm really hoping scuffing everything does the trick.  I'm dead sick of the slip. :(

There was an article somebody posted a while back - the thickness of the gasket material has to be spot on.  The difference between aftermarket, and OEM Honda gaskets was so slight, but the difference on the clutch was noticeable.

Difference how so?  The only thing the gasket thickness should change is the point of contact between the cam actuator and the ball bearing that pushes against the star piece.

Yeah I don't think the gasket thickness on the front matters as long as the clutch cable is adjusted right.

Ok now that I said that. Gasket thickness shouldn't be crazy. I thought it was something small like 3/32 but for some reason that number doesn't seem right at the moment. Maybe it was 3/64. I swear there is a three in there.

I've actually managed to re-use the stock gasket every time I've pulled the cover back off, with no leaks.

Rained all day, but I'll be on the bike tomorrow, so I'll report back with what happens.

The most common causes of clutch slip I know on my CXs(And fixed) are
1:bad cable routing
2:Clutch basket burrs(A bit of emery cloth to make sure the basket allows the plates/friction plates to move correctly).
3:Incorrect spring bolts used on re-build.
4:Incorrect plate order.

My clutch started to slip. I took it apart and found no real problem. But what I did see was just really old friction material. Those plates have been bathed in oil for a long time and they get saturated with the oil and the contaminates in it.
Dexron transmission fluid is full of detergents. soak the fiber plates in the transmission fluid and brush them with a tooth brush. Soon the transission oil will get black from the contaminates coming out of the fier. On the steel plates clean them with brake cleaner and get all the oil off of them and sand them with fine to med sand paper, just enough so you can see the sanding marks in the plates.

If you got good springs, that should work for a long time. When you put the cover back on, make sure the arm has some free play, and hook up the cable.

As above.I forgot to mention I have soaked the friction plates before with Carb/Brake cleaner and then boiled them in a big pan with some washing up liquid to remove contaminants.

HTH :)

Damn.  I did scrub the clutch friction discs with soap and water, but I didn't soak them in ATF or anything of the sort.

Alright, so I'll find out Monday on the way to work how the clutch does - soaking and removing any contaminants will be the next step (after that, I'm putting the damn CX650 turbo clutch in and calling it a day.  Let's see THAT slip on a stock CX500)

I wouldn't soak them in ATF.You want something like Carb/Brake cleaner to brake down any grease and contaminants and then boil them as above. This has helped me in the past.Same with contaminated brake pads/shoes.

I ran it all through the dishwasher, and replaced the worst disc (the 2.55mm thick one) with the best disc from the other engine (2.74mm)
