Went to ride the bike and killed it....

Well,
As you may know, I have been fixing up my bike, did the triple bypass, and put it back together. I had a little leak from the water pipe, and corrected that this past Sunday. I filled it up with water and warmed it up and it ran just great, no leaking.
Monday I took some time off to go put in new coolant and go for a ride. Took the tank off, since it is hard to fill the radiator with it on. Went to put it back on, and the wiring harness was stuck, so I yanked it to get it out from between the tank and the frame.
Got all my gear on, got on the bike, hit the starter button, and nothing happens. Was able to start it by shorting the solenoid, but the starter button doesn't work. Checked the button itself, it's fine, checked the solenoid.. it "was" fine, until I checked it (I kinda broke it) so the only thing I can think is I mucked up the wiring harness.
So, not really killed, but it definitely killed my mood since I was really, really REALLY looking forward to riding this week. Really. Grrr.
Guess I could just take an old switch I've got, wire it across the solenoid terminals and use that to start the bike.... Or I could tear my wiring harness apart again....
Just thought I would share / vent.
Mike

Giving the wiring harness a jerk shouldn't have hurt anything if pulling forward.
How about pulling the connector off the ignition switch and checking it out. I have heard them to get enough power to go but not start.

I had to short mine to start it today. Starter button works intermittently. I'll spray some electronics cleaner in the solenoid, worked last year.
You up for a ride some time soon?

Stitch : I re-did the wiring harness, right in that area there were a few breaks, so it is possible that one of my repairs got goofed up. I will check the ignition connector.
Ben: I'd love to go for a ride again, soon as I get it back on the road! I still have that extra muffler that you are welcome to, BTW :) I didn't have any electronics cleaner handy, so I'm not sure if that will fix it. Pushing the button clicked the headlight off, so part of the switch works t least.
Dave: My bike doesn't actually have a main fuse :) Its on my list of things to fix.

No main fuse. That that sounds like a problem to me that can be solved with $3.

Sounds like maybe a pinched broken wire where the tank slides over the frame? I am thinking that I may install a complete solenoid bypass momentary button under the left cover, it will energize the starter solenoid in case the throttle switch wiring goes on the fritz.

that wont work if it really fries, as there is a shutoff circuit in the key switch. that would also need bypassed.

This is exactly what I think the problem is, since I was able to short the solenoid and run the bike. I seriously thought about just riding it but thought someone might call the cops like I was stealing it since I would be shorting the solenoid to start it :)
The fuse holder I have at the garage, and just need to install it.

I had to 'hotwire' mine to start it for about a year and no one called the cops on me, so you should be ok. Good luck with the fix!

Went over to work on the bike tonight after the baby went to sleep. It was exactly as I thought, when I put the tank back on, I pulled the wiring harness too hard and one or my splices came apart. The wire was long enough, but it was folded over a bit farther down the harness. Now its all straightened out, the bike starts, and life is good. Hopefully tomorrow I can go pick it up and go for a bit of a drive, since the weather for this week looks like it will be in the mid 50's.

Its something to keep in mind for anyone that is taking their tank off a lot for mods, repairs and such to be extra careful.
A few extra zip ties or strap clamps in that area should keep things in place. Good to hear thats all it was.

Yay! Went to work on the bike today. Was 36 and drizzly this morning, but the ride was still run. Put 35 miles on it today.
Have to say big thanks to Larry, the carbs run really good on the bike, it doesn't hesitate off idle anymore, like it used to. Can't say it has any more power, but seems to run smoother, and idle better. Definitely recommend Larry's work!
Hopefully can get some good riding in before the snow starts up again, if it does, we always seem to get one or two more storms before may - but maybe not, who knows... if not, I can pile on the miles on the bike!
