It's Alive!!!!!! and I have a few questions
Reply Quote
After 25 years the monster lives!!!!! A little melodramatic there. I finally got the bike running this morning after a few little challenges so it runs for the first time in 25 years. It idles very well but has a little backfiring - just a little popping on decel. So after a 20 minutes of up and down the street, I changed the final drive gear oil and drained the coolant so its off to buy more coolant. Both had low time on them but needed changed for sure even with 3110 miles! How do you get all the air out of the cooling system on these bikes? Also, there is a slight hesitation right off of idle but I think I will ride it a while before any adjustments. The tach does not work properly. The needle moves as slow as the speedo needle and does not match the revs of the bike. What should I look at to fix it? So thanks to all who have helped so far and those who will guide me in the future!

ill take the air question.....bike on main stand, rad cap off, topped up with coolant, bike ticking over, wait for thermostat to open, just watch the fluid level drop as the pump forces coolant around the the system, air will come to the top of the rad,top up,you are away

when i feel the need,i do it,llego,ve 60,s

Thank you. Thank you very much as Elvis would say. Now, would you believe the little plastic coolant bolt broke off? It did with very little force. It was so loose I was able to unscrew what was left. So, do I really need a plastic bolt or will a metal bolt work?

The tach may or may not start working on its own after the weather (and the bike) warm up. It's generally due to hardened grease inside, You can loosen it up with a bit of silicone spray in from the back but just a tiny bit at a time or you'll fog the window.

Apparently there are some plastic ones off cars that will fit.Take a spark plug to an Autozone type shop and see if you can find a friendly/knowledgeable assistant.

Thanks guys for the help. My initial observation about the bike is it feels a little underpowered although it runs good. I thought it would have more torque but without a working tach, it's all seat of the pants right now. I would imagine the 650 has a lot more power.

For your tach, did you take the cable off and lube it? Could be a combo of unlubed cable and globbed grease inside the housing. Best way to lube it is unscrew it from the tach housing and drip or spray some synthetic lube down there. I've used bike chain lube with pretty good results, but any light liquid will work.

I have not removed the cable yet. I will take it off and clean and lube it. I have the radiator drained already so that will be tomorrow. Am I correct that there is grease in the tach itself?

Bob,  Glad to hear that it is alive.  There isn't really grease inside the tach, but when assembled, they put a dab of grease on the gears.  Over time this can migrate to the rotating drums and cause things to hang up.  There is no good way to clean them without opening up the case by uncrimping or cutting the chrome band.

Another possibility that you don't really want to hear is that the flat tab on the end of the worm screw in the tach drive may have sheered off and is only contacting the shaft by friction.  I have a GL500 that I have changed everything but the tach drive on, and it will not register the right RPM's.  The only thing left to do is swap out the drive.  But, fairing, radiator, fan, and afternoon naps all have to be taken first.  I can disconnect the cable at the tach head and actually hold the inner cable from spining with my fingers.  Careful if you try this, just use you fingers and not a cloth or pliers, if that isn't the problem, it soon will be.

Keep us informed on your progress.

The Spitfires arrived today and the wheel bearings and All Balls tapered head bearings as well. So I hope to have those installed by Tuesday. I have waited to order a new brake line and will get that done by the morning. So I still have quite a bit left to do but it's all coming together pretty well.

"Underpowered" is not a common adjective used to describe a CX.
