Where can I buy a single front line for my 79 CX500? I want to go with a stainless line instead of rubber. I have looked online but no luck.

You are not likely to find a suitable line sold as model specific for your bike. Just go to your local bike shop and ask them to order what you need from whichever aftermarket catalogue they prefer. It will probably cost about the same as ordering online but it will be there faster and if it isn't right the shop will deal with returning it.
You will need to tell them the length and fittings you need.

Like Bob said, it doesn't have to be specific for your bike, as long as the banjo's are the right diameter and its close to the same length as the OEM. I actually bought my stainless line from a Harley dealer. Probably the easiest thing to do is just bring your old line in so they can match it up there in the store.

This guy makes only DOT approved stainless brake lines made exactly to the original specs of you bike. I highly recommend him. I have bought 5 or 6 sets of lines from him for GLIs. His prices are excellent for what you get.

I just purchased a set of brake lines for my GL500I. They are all nice and shiny, installed and I love them. I haven't had a chance to get my bike out of my garage/yard yet (my driveway is a 100 yard long skating rink it seems) but I'm more than happy with the feel of them.

Does this guy at JDA Enterprises ever answer his email? I've written twice and never gotten any type of reply.

Try a phone call and Craig's secretary should answer.
He probably is pit crewing for a national race team he belongs to and until he gets back his email will sit as his secretary doesn't answer it. Sorry ... but his brake lines are worth waiting for.

What kind of ballpark numbers are we talking about for new stainless lines on a dual disk 650? I'm planning to do it eventually, but trying to budget my parts ordering a bit.

fastpkr,
I just ordered the ss lines for my 650 from the Quad Parts Guys on ebay which Blindstich mentioned, above. It was about $70 for three lines but two of the lines were on clearance. One line comes from the the master cylinder to a splitter at the bottom of the fairing. Then there are two lines from the splitter to the two brakes. I bought two 20" lines and one 22" line. But, I haven't installed them yet so am not 100% certain that those measurements are correct. (I sure hope they are!)

Does the guy from JDA already have the specs for the GL500 or do we have to provide them. I may order ahead of time and won't have to worry about taking them off to measure and have the bike down....especially if he is slow to deliver.

He should have the specs. Just remember a gl500 has what one brake like from the mc to the caliper and a gl500i has 3. One from the mc to the forks, and two from the forks to each caliper.

Craig at JDA has both the plain GL500 and the GL500I brake line patterns. All of his lines have exactly the same bends on the fittings and the same position on the brake line as the original.
Also ever bike brake line he sells is DOT approved. Very few manufactures of stainless lines have that.
Also, you have a choice of several colors for the covering over the stainless braiding if you don't want a clear covering.
Craig told me today to apologizes to anyone who had been trying to contact him and didn't get an answer. He had his computer system at work crash and he was unable to get tohis email for a while. He is now back on line and is again getting his email.
If he has a pattern for the bike (any make or model) you need a hose for he normally has a same day mailing on the brake lines. If he doesn't have a pattern, he will ask to use your brake line to make a pattern and unless it has very unusual brake fittings you will have lines shipped back to you within 24 hour hours of receiving your lines to make a pattern from.
With all the bikes I have worked on there was only one bike he couldn't make a brake line for. It was BMW model the had a 6 inch metal tube off the banjo fitting that had weird squiggly lines in it. He apologized to the guy and sent the original line back to him. He later found the fitting for that bike in Spain and it was not for sale to anyone but BMW.
Craig's work is excellent.

I got new brake lines from this contact. I'm very pleased with them. They look sharp and feel good. For my GL500i, the lengths were fine in my opinion.

I just ordered a custom line from Dash3. With my bar, riser and handguard setup I needed a longer line and a 50" line with new bolts and washers came to $35. Should be here by the end of the week. We'll see how it turns out.

Here's P. 956 of the Motovan catalogue, showing the bulk brake line and the fittings. I have bought the line and made up my own lines several times, including a long clutch line for the Nighthawk that I later cut into 2 shorter lines for the GoldWing when I changed to 2" longer forks and the lines I had were too short.
Motovan is a Canadian motorsports distributor. Your local dealer will have a similar catalogue with a similar page. If you are in the US the prices will probably be lower.

Here is P.945 of Motovan's catalogue showing Russel pre-made lines of various lengths and p.949 with the ends that screw into them. The line on the 650 (which was on the GL500 and the CB750SC before that) is this type.

I finally got around to calling him (Craig at JDA) this afternoon and talking to him. He didn't have to look up which model took which line; he knew. I was impressed with him. Anyway, I've gone ahead and ordered a new stainless steel teflon coated line for my Silverwing. He said with any luck that it'd go out TODAY.
How about dem apples?

12.7mm (1/2") = single caliper
16mm (5/8") = dual caliper
14mm (9/16") = ?????
Maybe its a compromise size that's not right for either but not as bad as the wrong one........

I ordered the brake line from JDA Enterprises on April 6th in the afternoon. It arrived this morning (April 8th) all the way from California to North Carolina. Damned fine service, I'd say.
I went ahead and ordered the chrome master cylinder supposedly for the Yamaha with the 12.7mm piston. The first link I'd posted had apparently been on the Canadian Fleabay site and the shipping was quite high. So I went of the American Fleabay site and found the same ad with the shipping approximately 1/3 of the Canadian. $86 shipped. We'll see how their service is. I got it from the guy down in Miami.

Does anyone know the length of the front brake line on the 79 standard models? Am I correct that the custom models are a bit longer?

get a 38-40. I would and did go with 40 because a couple extra inches isn't going to kill anyone.

I am just in from the garage after spending the afternoon hooking up my new brake lines from Quad Parts Guys off of ebay.
The lengths I bought are OK (two 20", one 22" for a 650i). But one slight problem I found is that the banjo ends should really be 90 degrees from each other. As is, I had to put a twist on each line to get them to hook up. I don't think this will be a big problem but I didn't like putting the tension on them.
I suspect that the supplier which David from Wisc suggests (JDA) would not need to be twisted in this manner. So, if you can afford the extra approximate $30, and don't want this problem as described, you should buy from them.

I got mine off ebay for my GL500 Interstate for 53.12 + 13.00 shipping from a seller named linespro. He let me have a rear brake line for an additional 18.00 (no shipping cost). The order took a little over a week.
The lines are installed and look great (I picked silver over the black option). The front is a 3 piece set up for the GL650 fork but 500 should be similar. Here is the info I had to send: #1 line 1.) 25 inches
2.) Fitting G and H
3.) Silver color brake hose
4.) Type A
5.) Jerry (sanae.ej@verizen.net)
6.) 1.00 thread bolt
#2 line
1.) 21 inches
2.) Fitting G and H
3.) Silver color brake hose
4.) Type C
5.) Jerry (sanae.ej@verizen.net)
6.) 1.00 thread bolt
#3 line
1.) 21 inches
2.) Fitting G and H
3.) Silver color brake hose
4.) Type C
5.) Jerry (sanae.ej@verizen.net)
6.) 1.00 thread bolt
If you order, get the longer bolt. I got ones that were too short so I reused my old ones.
Our main computer is down so pics will be delayed for a while.
