Motorcycle Insurance in Ontario, Canada

Well, greetings to everyone - had another small hiatus. Work & personal life got in the way - no one can say life isn't interesting. Almost lost my best friend this week, but that's another story...
I just got my CX500 certified today. Took 'er in yesterday, and got a call to pick it up today. It needed nothing.
This question is mainly for members who live in Ontario, but feel free to comment if you wish.
Question - Is there ANY insurance provider in Ontario who isn't totally screwing motorcyclists? I now have two vintage motorcycles, and I'm the only one who is even licenced to ride in this household. However, my insurance company (Jevco) wants another $538 a year for the CX500. Am I mental, or does anyone else think it's wrong to be paying full insurance on two bikes that you can't possibly ride at the same time? Sorry, the arguement "a bike can be stolen at any time" doesn't apply, as Jevco only insures for liability on these ancient beasts. If it's stolen, destroyed, or atomizes before my eyes, it's not covered. I know the "list" of insurance providers who even insures these old bikes is a short one here. But please - there has to be an alternative, no? I think I know what the answer is going to be, but felt it doesn't hurt to ask - this costs nothing. If, by chance, there is a company out there giving us a break, it would be in my best interest to save money. I'm paying full-rate on every vehicle I own (this will be the fourth). This madness has to end...

I switched companies 2 years ago, my insurance was going to be over 600.00 per year so I went to T.D. insurance, it cost me less than 300.00 through them. My last bill was 274.00 per year on my CX. When I told my old provider that I had found insurance at half the the
price they were asking, the agent looked at me and and said, "Oh, that must be
through T.D." ,, I assumed I was not the only one that had switched. It may cost more in Ontario but I would give them a call and get a quote.

Have you tried "Primmum" insurance, just for simplicity i have all my insurance through them ie car, bikes, house etc.
One of my G/F's bikes, a 1978 185cc Honda Twinstar was refused by her insurace company as they said it "was too old" WTF.
She changed insurance companies and got a much better deal on her 2 bikes.
I'll have to find out the company she switched to.
Harold,
I may give TD a call to see if there rates are better.....TKS

Hi Lambykin, but yeah, I ran into the same nonsense last year. Furthermore, after telling them they were 1982 bikes (750 and CX500) they told me they would discontinue my insurance in 2012 - no matter what - 30 years was their limit. Ill check with TD insurance as well. Another BS thing happened with Kingsway (my current insurer) was in 2006, they had Vintage or Classic vehicle insurance for bikes or cars 25 years or older. Cars are still at 25 years, but bikes got extended to 30 - the year before my bikes turned 25....and guess what - they wont insure a 30 year old bike. Its a crock....thats for sure.

Thanks for the input. I would expect insurance here in Ontario to be more - living in the GTA, I'm pretty certain we pay the most for insurance in the country. Doesn't hurt to make a few calls tomorrow to look into a few alternatives. If I discover some amazing offer, I'll mention it.
Anyone else have any input? :-)

Thanks, CXSarnia (hadn't seen your message before I posted). Now that's interesting to know - I'm only a year away from 30 on the CX500, and 2 years away on the GL500.
That IS a crock, because our bikes don't suddenly become "unsafe" at 30. Just another example of how one-sided insurance has become. Actually, I can't even think of one good thing insurance is doing for us on these vintage bikes.
Maybe we should be writing our MPs. Insurance should have become a public operation YEARS ago, but like eveyrthing government, they only get involved when it's least convenient for the people of the land. Anyway, a topic for another thread.
I just want to be insured, and try to limit the pain.

Now that mine's over 30 Providian went up to $95 a year even though I can prove I rarely ride it and have two other vehicles covered.
Not really fair to base rates on how old a vehicle is.

Jevco has been anti-motorcycle for years. That's their policy - they just don't want bikes. I spoke to them when I got my first streetbike - in the '80s when they were blacklisting sportbikes, and never spoke to them again.
I'm with Coseco, but don't know if they have an age cutoff. Price is under $350/yr.
Another worth a try is Dalton Timmis http://www.homeforchrome.com
They insure a lot of older vintage bikes; I've heard good things about them through the CVMG.
Ontario is bad but Quebec (formerly a bargain for bike insurance) and BC are worse. Heard Sask is terrible too.

Well, Home for Chrome states on their Online Quote page that they insure bikes up to 25 years of age, and up to $60000 in value. However, further down the page they also state that if you own a sport bike, or own a bike that doesn't meet the requirements to give them a call. I don't have a lot of hope at the moment, but a toll-free call can't hurt any.
I appreciate the different insurance companies to try - someone out there must be insuring these beasts. Any other companies to try? Feel free to post! :-)

I am in Nova Scotia and insure my bikes through The Personal (1-888-277-6481).
I don't want to make you sick, but the insurance on my CX500Turbo is $62/year. Of course, that is just liability, and that's all I care to carry. I just got off the phone with them, arranging coverage for the GL650 I just bought. For some reason, it is higher at $75/year.
I know Ontario is expensive, but you might want to give them a call. I am happy with their service.

Well, it certainly will be worthwhile to shop around. No company I know of seems to insure these bikes for anything more than just liability. This makes comparing & shopping for insurance rather easy, and it's really not going to matter who you're with.
I live in the most densely populated area in the land (the wonderful Greater Toronto Area) so it stands to reason our rates will be higher. However, I'm of the belief the rates we pay are criminal. You can't even drive down the streets at 3am and not encounter someone. I've been to N.S. - you can drive on one of their "highways" for miles during the day and not encounter another car or vehicle for miles. As for being sick - already am. :-) The insurance on all of your bikes don't come to a fraction of what I pay on one motorcycle.
Thanks for the phone number - I'll give them a call, too.

Ah insurance. One of my many shiny red buttons.
Just to clarify (in Ontario, at least). I transfered my auto insurance to TD a few years ago as I was weary of getting raped every year because of an old fender bender. Their rates were much lower than my old company. When I reinsured the Silverfish I called them and got an excellent quote (again, for Ontario) of about $300/yr. But it seems that TD doesn't actually write bike policies; they pass them over to Primmum.
So TD general insurance and Primmum Insurance, according to my insurance slips, share a mailing address (304 The East Mall, 6th Floor, Etobicoke, ON, M9B 6E2), but have their own phone numbers:
TD - 416-233-2879, 1-866-454-8910
Primmum - 416-233-7590, 1-866-454-8911
They must be good friends...
edit: These guys only do liability I think. They might do more with an appraisal.

With those rates, don't ever move to Ontario, or you'll be very poor very quick. I know comparing insurance rates is tough, because of all the factors. But for comparison's sake, here's what you'd be paying in Ontario. I have a clean driving record, have the highest rating possible with my insurance company, no accidents, I'm male, and 39 years old:
2005 Honda Accord V6 - $1500 to $1700 (I forget exactly what it is, but it's "cheap" for this area)
1985 Pontiac Fiero $512
1982 Honda GL500 - just over $500, but more than the Fiero
I was quoted $538 for the CX500 yesterday.
My rates are fairly cheap for the location. I'd hate to be a young guy in the 18-25 age range these days because they pay thousands for a typical econobox.

I just got off the phone with The Personal. Quick note - The Personal ONLY insures "group insurance" - so you must belong to a group (possibly your employer, etc.). However, The Personal has private insurance through their sister company, which is Desjardins General Insurance.
For my bikes, I was quoted $330 a year for each (a significant savings for me). The Fiero was more at $696, and the Accord was $1235. Only the Fiero was more for some strange reason...

Cool, thanks for reporting back. I felt pretty confident they would be better, but it's nice to have it confirmed. Just drive the Fiero into the lake and you're all set.
Yeah, I forgot The Personal is group; funny thing is, the group I'm in ceased to exist some years ago when Manulife bought out Maritime Life, and I really fell out of the group when I was divorced from my Maritime Life-employed wife about 10 years ago! Guess I better start a new group...

Update:
Home for Chrome - don't bother if you're already insured with Jevco. They use Jevco, and gave me exactly the same quote my broker gave me ($538).
I went with Desjardins General Insurance (sister company to The Personal). There is no age cut-off. The $330 I was quoted was if I were to move my other bike or a car to them. I'll be moving my other bike come June. However, for stand-alone insurance, it's $449 for the year on the CX500. The GL500 is the same rate. Still a decent saving as compared to Jevco.
T.D. Insurance was higher, but under $500. When you call the T.D. number, you are actually speaking to a Primmum agent. The rate will be identical no matter which number you call.
Conseco - Totally UNIMPRESSED. When I called to get a quote, an automated message informed me they were overwhelmed, and to go through their web site. Sorry, but this is poor practice - not everyone has a computer. Visions of poor customer service ran through my head. When everyone else is answering their phones & happy to give a quote, these guys fall off the map. Judging from above, their rates are likely going to be in-line with the others anyway.
Jevco - I asked some questions, and found out more. Jevco bought out Kingsway. Kingsway was in the practice of cutting off motorcycle insurance when bikes hit a certain age. Apparently Jevco doesn't practice this policy, and they will insure a bike of any age. However, they are the most expensive out there (which falls in-line with the comment about them being anti-motorcycle).
I could likely have been on the phone all day comparing rates, but after having several quotes, the picture was clear. I'm sure there are people in Ontario paying less than $330 a month for bike insurance, but I can't see it being much less than the high $200 range. I would think that if you have a clean record, and go for liability only, you're doing very well if you're in the $300 range. I'll be in this range (per bike) when I move my other bike over. For now, $449 isn't bad, and was still less than Primmum and far less than Jevco.
It's too late for me, as I've now purchased insurance, but if anyone comes up with another insurance company (in Ontario) that has excellent rates, feel free to post.
Thanks to everyone who gave their input. I really wished I lived in another province, but that's that. :-)

Dan - You're probably grandfathered in. Just leave it as-is - don't upset the applecart! ;-)
Sorry, I can't drive the Fiero into the lake - it's insured for liability only. Actually, I have the same insurance issues with it as I do for the bikes - it's just an old car, and the insurance companies will only offer liability & nothing else. Well, they will offer accident forgiveness, but that's it. Anything happens to it, too bad so sad...

Well, glad to hear you got it worked out. Hell, I'd move everything to Desj and get the multi-vehicle discount.
OF COURSE, you COULD just up and move to Nova Scotia, depending on what your occupation is. I kind of like being a firefighter here. And all my passions (sailing, motorcycling, and just knocking around in the woods) are satisfied here, except for my preference of year-round warm temperatures!

Just my 2 cents worth to add to this thread:
I was informed a few years ago, that motorcycle insurance premiums would start going through the roof due to what the insurance industry calls "the flesh factor" !!!
That being the cost in hospital fees, lost time at work, rehab etc.
That's why i guess the young pups on crotch rockets are paying the higher prices and us older folks (i'll speak for myself...LOL) are paying the fall out prices.
Thanks for letting me rant.

Well here in Alberta my broker uses Jevco for my motorcycles, My new BMW with "full coverage", and valued at $23,000.00 costs me $ 600.00 a year. My just new to me 1979 CX500 Custom with liability costs me $230.00 a year, my broker understands I can only drive one at a time my car and truck included, so perhaps you need to educate them and let your insurance company know they are not the only show in town

Dan - at least both my motorcycles will be with Desjardins come June. My insurance rates have crept up over the last couple of years, and I've been getting some lame excuses from my broker. My agent left a while ago. But after my renewal last year, I'm not so certain I'll be renewing again through them, especially if they're telling me stories (I was told Jevco doesn't offer multi-vehicle discount for two bikes, yet it's just been stated they do). I don't like these business practices, and I'll be speaking with my wallet. Last year when I inquired about my increase in auto insurance, they justified it by saying the level of service was superior (how can I know this when I don't make claims?).
I won't move for a few bucks, but when I can start to save a few hundred or more....heck, that's another bike or some other toy! ;-)
Really can't compare Ontario to other provinces. Anyone who's lived here & has travelled to other provinces can quickly see why we have the rates we do. We have a lot of people, and it stands to reason that collisions are extremely common. All we can do is envy other provinces.
As for moving to Nova Scotia - I have kids and a business. While the business goes where I go, it wouldn't be fair to my kids to leave them and grow up without me. It's the very same reason I have turned down job offers from California (though I'm sure insurance in California is similar to Ontario).

Car insurance? Don't get me started. But after the high prices, I'd start talking about the role adjusters play. Insert fav swear words here: E@$@$@ #$#T #$T %$@ %%$#$@ ^%^#@$#@ %@# . Perhaps car insurance adjusters have graduated from high-pressure car sales school.
I feel better now.

Now that's funny . I've not heard that automated message before; On their web site it states:

notice calling is the first option! Don't blame you - I won't do business with corporations that don't answer their phone either. Small operations I'll give a break, but a huge operation who won't hire one additional operator? Not a chance.
We'll see which direction my rates go at my August renewal time - maybe I'll be giving Desjardins a call.

Vitter - yes, that's the number I called. There is an online quote button, and that's what the automated message was referring to.
I meant to mention that T.D./Primmum insurance wouldn't be a wise choice overall. Not because of cost, but they warned me up-front that they only insure bikes up to 30 years of age. Existing customers with vintage bikes will be shopping around like I had to do...

Hi All,
I have my CX insured with Meloche Monnex (TD) and my premium is about $200 per year. There are a couple of special cases for this:
1) I'm a P.Eng and get a group rate though the Engineers association
2) They won't write new policies on bikes 30 years or older. They will maintain coverage if you already have a policy
So unless you can go back in time, get an Engineering Degree and insure your bike before it turns 30 this isn't going to help much with most CX's. I'm planning on selling the CX in April but kept the insurance on it just in case I change my mind.

I'm in Vancouver, BC, bare minimum(liability, lowest coverage) and including a 20% safedriver discount since I've never claimed and my insurance is 1068$/yr For a 1986 diesel golf, liability only(my car before I went back to school) I was looking at 1680 a year. It gets better mileage than the CX, and parking rates are the same. BC insurance sucks.
The damn bike was free, I can get a 398cc two stroke that will wrap me around a pole a lot faster but the insurance is less than half(cut off is 400) 500cc is an ugly duckling here, 750 isn't any higher insurance, so why buy a 500.
Always wanted a TW200. Too broke to buy one. Given a busted CX500. Never looking back:)
Current bike: 1979 CX500 Custom 15k km, bone stock:(

And I thought the increase from $66 to $95 a year on mine was excessive .....
Well, I live here and you live there. Around here your chances of hitting someone is going to be an SUV (who has golf glubs in the back) or a pickup truck. (who has loaded deer rifles and shotguns on his gun rack)

I just checked what insurance costs this year, and it makes me sick. The 650 is $981 and the 500 is $697. The 650 will have to go.

I'm sick right here with you. My 500C is considered to be a sports bike. It's old and subject to breaking down as in losing brakes on the highway, or people trying to ride them with 20 year old tires.
What the heck is going on?

I've been insured with Primmum, since the MMIC Open Road program started in '91. At that time CIAG wanted $450 to insure my GS400 but the MMIC program charged me $159 + a $10 sign up fee.
My rates have been creeping up steadily, but it has taken 15 years for the rate for the 'Wing to catch up to what CIAG wanted the last time I asked.
I have been happy with Primmum so far, but if the experience I had when I changed the policy back to the 650 in the fall is any indication of how they are doing things now I will be shopping around when I change back to the 'Wing.

You might try RBC. Last June they beat the Primmum quote by almost 15%. Just out of curiosity I asked for a quote for a CX650 Turbo as well as for my CX650E and they came back with identical price. Gonna probably transfer my Van and Neon when policies come up in June. Consolidation can only save more.
